Topic: Falling in Love

I've had my eyes on this gorgeous Epiphone Les Paul "Prophecy EX" for a while, and my savings account for it is getting closer to a purchase:

http://images.epiphone.com.s3.amazonaws.com/Products/Les-Paul/Prophecy-Les-Paul-EX/Gallery/LesPaulProphEX_MS_Splash.jpg

The color just melts me inside, almost like falling in love does. Once purchased, the EMG pickups (not a fan) will be replaced with a set of Seymour-Duncan P-Rails (https://www.seymourduncan.com/pickup/p- … et-black-3), and I'll move my Stetsbar tremolo off the black Les Paul on to this one. And of course a set of Grover 106B locking tuners (black) will be needed also ... essential with a trem.

The EMGs and the black Les Paul will be sold, for "cost recovery". I'm not a shredder, but this "black & blue" beauty has captured my imagination, and I woke up thinking about it this morning. Yep, got serious G.A.S. with this one!

Anyone else got a dream guitar project in the works?

Re: Falling in Love

I was always a fan of PRS guitars; when I was playing back in the 90's, they were always (price wise) out of reach. I saw my first couple in Kosmic music, and was taken my the shape and style of the guitar, could never afford one at the time ... fast forward to the 10's and PRS bought out the SE range, which were mostly affordable, due to moves in jobs, etc, so I finally bought a PRS in January 2011 (click pic for unboxing):

http://neophytte.mine.nu/photo/2011-01-31-new_PRS_guitar/images/new_PRS_guitar-046.jpg

Which I then modded to have an internal Roland pickup system in September of that same year (click pic for installation story):

http://neophytte.mine.nu/photo/2011-09-28-PRS_Torero_add_Roland_GK-Kit-GT3/images/PRS_Torero_add_Roland_GK-Kit-GT3-056.jpg

Then I realised I could afford the guitar I'd lusted after all those years ago, so bought a PRS CE (the early model) from eBay USA, I watched it for a while (months!) an the seller couldn't sell it, not sure why, it might be because everyone wants the 'tiger stripes' of a PRS, but I actually prefer the solid colours; anyway, the Aussie dollar was riding high against the US greenback, so finally bit the bullet, paid a bit for import taxes (anything over $au1k attracts a processing fee + 10% of value) and now own this beauty (the pic is after the clean up):

http://neophytte.mine.nu/photo/2014-08-25_PRS_Electric_1989/images/PRS_Electric_1989-014.jpg

Even further down the track (last year), I bought a SAS (Swamp Ash Special) in green:

And I see there is another Red PRS Electric on Reverb at the moment .... although it's a bit beat up .... hmmmm .....

Cheers

TIG ... you've got it right. It's a powerful yet enjoyable affliction that most guitarists have. smile

NEO ... those are some gorgeous PRS's in your custody. While I'm not a fan of ceramic magnet pickups (both EMG and PRS use them) they are extremely playable guitars, and their build quality is second to none. Is that a Roland Piezo bridge in the second pic? Very nice!

No, it's a Roland GK-Kit, you can see the build notes here ... (and thanks!!)

I've also got a super nice fan fret custom build from Sydney luthier Rick Murizzi:

Re: Falling in Love

That last one is amazing; what a gorgeous guitar! I'm a sucker for natural woods (is that Zebra Wood?) and the pattern is well-suited to a neck-thru construction like you've got there. I'll bet it has lots of sustain, and the variable scale gives you lots of drop-tuning options. What do the mini toggles do? Coil splitting?

There ... I just drooled on my laptop! lol

Tenement Funster wrote:

Yes, African Zebra wood, I believe ...

Tenement Funster wrote:

No, there are push-pull pots for the coil splitting; the two switches are for pickup selection (Bridge/Both/Neck) and the other is for Passive/Active - the early model Bartolini pickups are really amazing in clarity and tone ....

More pics to drool over ....

Re: Falling in Love

Wow ... very nice, Neo! I played one of these neck-thru -body bass guitars by ESP / LTD a couple years ago, and almost bought it. Even though it's relatively inexpensive (about $750) it sounded great, had lots of sustain, and looks absolutely stunning. The 3 smaller knobs are EQ boost/cut knobs (low-mid-high freq), as it has active pickups. That walnut top ... whoa, baby!

Wow, that's a nice bass - love that top; I had a similar one a while ago, which was an Ibanez with the Bartolini pickups, 18v on board and neck through:

http://neophytte.mine.nu/photo/2015-03-09_bass_restring/images/bass_restring-030.jpg

I swapped it with a mate for a Spector 5 string, and was probably one of the swaps I regretted. The Spector was in poor shape, but scrubbed up OK - I still need to fix the electronics as the guy whom my mate bought it off had mucked about with it, and (I ddidn't realize when I was fixing his bad solder job) had made it so the battery for the pre-amp was permanently on ... which was probably why my mate was using rechargables inside it (and the sticker was to cover a hole the previous guy had drilled for whatever reason ...):

I'm not sure why my wife says I have too many guitars tongue

Re: Falling in Love

Pretty impressive! you might want to test the stockers b4 swapping out smile found this .. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bsx4HqHGWo

How much for the EMG's and is there special hook ups for them since active?

are you trying for "new" price?

Re: Falling in Love

I can answer the second part of that question ... you'll need to wire in a battery and also change the 'mono' output plug to a 'stereo' output plug - this allows your mono plug to act as a switch to turn the battery on or off as needed (don't leave it plugged in, or the battery will always be 'on' and get drained!!), it's not a very complex circuit, here's a wiring diagram I found for EMG 85/81/60's ...

I've played EMG 81/85s before, and don't particularly care for their tone (Alnico V magnets). I'll just bypass / eliminate the battery pack and go straight to the output jack, because the P-Rails are passives. They have the coil splitting option (which I like) but not just for single / humbucker. The splits give the guitarist a single rail / P90 / humbucker option on each pickup, and the ring-mounted switches allow for any combination of them ... nice.

They guy who does my wiring will take the EMGs, and we've talked about the money difference. Nothing's purchased yet, so it's not done till it's done. smile

Re: Falling in Love

Unfortunately, the guitar project is now on standby. I got an amazing bargain yesterday on a stack of kiln-dried hardwood (all clear maple & birch) so couldn't pass it up.

Re: Falling in Love

Well the technical information was over my head, but I have got to agree with the beauty of a blue stripety guitar.

I saw a blue stripety violin once and should have bought it.  I still regret not buying it even though I don't even play violin. It was that pretty.

The wood is actually furniture grade lumber, and it took 2 trips with a half-ton truck to bring it all home. There's enough here to build a complete set of kitchen cabinets (and then some), but don't tell my wife ... it'll be a surprise for her birthday in April! wink Here's a pic of the stack I got, as it was shown on KIJIJI before I bought it. There was a bit of water damage on a few pieces, but I got it for approx. 1/3 of what it would cost at a hardwood dealer:

Re: Falling in Love

Richard and everyone, until I got my Rogue "Beatle Bass" ALL my guitars were blue. I had 4 at once (not expensive). Takamine Jasmine (acc/elec), a Galveston acc/electr, bass, a Fender Strat, and the Epi Les Paul Studio.

Funny, isn't it how some of us musicians have that "fetish" for a certain color, or other attributes on their instruments?

I'm reminded of Dizzie Gillespie and that bent-upward horn end of his trumpet;  some folks want the same color as Chet Atkins' "Country Gentleman" in the same color as Chet's; and was it Sammy Hagar who only played red Strats? and so on.

I like Richard's black and red 6-string (model name?) and wouldn't mind going off the blue for one like that.

Can y'all think of any other guitarists who do this?

It's a cheapie I got in the 90's; we had a music store within walking distance of my work, for a couple of weeks I went down most lunchtimes and picked this one out ...
