Can anyone tell me the simplist way to change or transpose to another key when the vocalist can no longer hit the notes?

JCS - do you mean in the middle of a song? or do you just need a transposing tool?

heres a tip for you to help transpose:
write out ALL the notes(A to G including #s and bs)in order
(put the sharps and flats grouped eg: A#/Bb)
around a circle of paper or card.
next write them all out again on a bigger circle in the same places so that each note is under itself when you put the small on top of the big eg:
A
G#/Ab A A#/Bb
G#/Ab A#/Bb B
B
so then all you need to do is make the original key the outside ring, and the new key the inside ring, match the old with the new and hey presto, you've got the new notes under the original (also works with chords to some extent).

I play semi-pro now but Pro for 15 years and have taught music.
THE BRODIE has a great idea with the Circle Of Fifths, but if it doesn’t make sense, try this: Put the chords of the song on paper, is a straight line. Decide what Key you want to experiment with and count up, making the original Key #1 – for instance; the song is play in E but your singer needs really tight underwear to do it now, so you want to go to G (I’m in this boat now, can you tell?)
E F G is 3 notes (E=1 F=2 G=3 sharps and flats don’t count, yet)
Your “major” chords are 1, 4, 5 and possibly the minor, so
1 4 5 6minor
E A B Cm becomes
G C D Em
If you know Barre Chord patterns, you will notice they won’t change much. I go down in half-steps from the highest note in my limited singing range, so move down one fret at a time until your vocals sound top-notch again. Sometimes, just changing the voicing of the accompaniments can help. Explore that too.

simplest...
capo or tune the instrument to the singer's range
that way you can play your existing shapes.

tune down a couple of keys,, i.e,, instead of 1 and 6 being " e " tune down to a d,, and tune the other 4 strings accordingly... i know,, im the original squeaky voice!!!!!!

Jazz players solve this by calling the
progression in degrees. If the song is
in C, and the progression is C-F-G, then
the progression is a 1-4-5.
The 1-4-5 of the G scale is G-C-D.
The 1-4-5 of the F scale is F-A#-C.
Take your lyrics and chords sheets
and write the degree next to the
letter. If the song is in C and the
key of the measure(s) changes to D,
the write a 2 next to the D.
You can do this on melodies, too.
