Topic: Roses!

Ive been up to my teeth in flowers all day. Im not complaining , i love them.

A lot of guys do order Red Roses for Valentines Day. But in the last few years i have had quite a lot of orders for white roses. So, here ya go lads/ lasses, so  you will all know what the colours symbolize in roses.

Roses have had meaning since the dawn of time. Everyone knows that a red rose is a symbol for love but did you know that when you give a bouquet of white and red roses, it means unity?
Read on to learn what your favorite roses mean in the very special language of flowers.
In Victorian times, suitors would present a bouquet to their intended that held much meaning once the flowers were looked at. These bouquets were called "tussie-mussies" and every courtship began with their presentation. The content of these tokens often changed as the relationship did until the bride walked down the aisle with the most meaningful bouquet.

. Red roses say “I love you† and also stand for respect and courage.
Rosebuds symbolize beauty, youth and a heart innocent of love or:  “You are young and beautiful.†  Red rosebuds mean “pure and lovely† and white rosebuds signify girlhood or “too young to love.† The moss rosebud stands for confessions of love.

A single rose stands for simplicity.  In full bloom, it means “I love you† or “I love you still,† and a bouquet of roses in full bloom signifies gratitude.

White roses have several meanings:  “You’re heavenly,† reverence and humility, innocence and purity, “I’m worthy of you,† and secrecy and silence.

Red and white roses together, or white roses with red edges, signify unity.

Pink roses in general symbolize grace and gentility.  For more subtle shades of meaning, choose deep pink to stand for gratitude and appreciation.  Light pink conveys admiration and sympathy.

Yellow roses usually stand for joy and gladness, but can also say “try to care.†

Red and yellow blends stand for jovial and happy feelings.

Coral or orange roses denote enthusiasm and desire.

A deep burgundy rose means “unconscious beauty.†

Pale colors convey sociability and friendship.

Hybrid tea roses mean “I’ll remember you always† and sweetheart roses symbolize just what their name implies.

Two roses taped or wired together to form a single stem signal an engagement or coming marriage.

A full blown rose placed over two buds forms a combination that signifies secrecy.

Withered white roses have two meanings:  fleeting beauty and “you made no impression.†

A crown made of roses signifies reward or virtue.

Rose leaves are a symbol of hope.

Re: Roses!

Hi Old DOll!

Are you the Mary Poppins of Dunn Loaghaire? How come so many roses all day?
I just heard that here in the U.S. the price of a dozen roses jumped from $15 to $25 just recently, and you can spend as much as $60 for a nice arrangement!  I think I'll give my ladies (wife and grown daughter) something more nourishing for Valentine's Day: Each a six pack of Pilsener Urquell beer from the Czech Republic. I may even get one for myself to celebrate my never-ending love for myself.

I do however appreciate you educating us on the meaning of roses. I've always loved them, fresh or dried -they are equally alluring.

Play on! Watch out for thorns!

Re: Roses!

lol Tenneesee Strats,

Its my work Sir. The cheapest bouquet i made yesterday was 75 Dollars.
The most expensive 200 dollars. not adding the cost of chocolates, card,
and a big thing here now is Rose Petals. They take there partners away
to hotels and scatter the bed with these! The price of flowers quadruple at
the auctions fpr Mothers day/Valentines day.
Then you have all kinds of quality Roses. Short stem/ long stem.small/large head/buds..
Give me the old fahioned rose from the garden, The scent is to die for.
Modern Roses are so mass produced they have lost there natural scent,
But not there appeal,

I had 2 favourites yesterday. The Man who wanted daffodils for his wife.
A  big bouquet of them simply tied.
Another who asked could he have a lucky bamboo inserted in
his rose Bouquet,? When i asked why he said" Im hoping its lucky enough to
bring on a  a divorce, lol
Then we have the people who order 2. One for the wife/ girlfriend/ or mistress.

As for the thorns! Most are already stripped on supply. But i never fail to leave
a spot of blood some where on a rose Valentines Day. Ouch!

Enjoy your day { and beer}
away to work now { Me}

Re: Roses!

I thought I'd surprise my wife this year. In the 25 years I've known her I have never given her a gift on St Valentines Day. Well, apart from the first year. This has never bothered her since she doesn't bother with it herself.

So I thought I'd surprise her. Just to let her know I really don't take our love for granted (getting soppier with age). So I ordered a single red rose along with card and bottle of red wine online and arranged for it to be delivered to her work.

She phoned me this morning (Valentines Day) telling me she'd had a phone call from her work, telling her she had flowers, wine and card delivered. She then informed me she was attending a seminar today and wouldn't be going to work as normal, and now it meant that instead of making her way straight home early, she would now have to detour back to work to pick up the symbols of my undying, infinite love and then make her way home, carrying this burden of my affection on public transport.

Love hurts....

Never again. lol

Is anything really made up of zeros and ones??

Re: Roses!

But I am sure will travel back with a big smile on her face and her heart racing, impatient to get home to be able to thank you properly. Having candles lit for when she arrives home might be an good idea.

Re: Roses!

Candles may be a good idea. I have just spent the past hour installing new ceiling lamps in the living room. With my track record in Home Improvement candles might be required when the lights blow out.

Re: Roses!

well i never buy roses, especially at valentines day. I see it as I do all other days like vals day, easter, mothers day, fathers day, christmas ( but that is for the kids) it is all comercialised nonsense for companies to cash in.
People are forced to think they have to get a card for someone or a present just because of what day it is. Easter cards!!!! I only seen them in the last 5 or 6 years, cashing in!!!!
As for valentines day, you should not need one day of the year to tell your wife or burd or hubby or boyfriend that you love them.
When I was younger, not so long ago lol Valentines day was for secret admirers to give an annonymus card to someone they fancied. This is ok to give a card then, but husbands and even wives are being forced to spend money on their loved ones just because it is made out to be the right thing to do.
Me and my wife have an understanding on this, We agree not to get each other anything. I did get her flowers this year but not roses.
As for taking a loved one out for dinner on this day, Restaraunts near me chuck an extra £5 or so onto the bill just because of the day and silly people pay it and say it is worth it????????? if they were to get an extra fiver thrown onto the bill on any other day the ownder would be told where to go, but oh no, not on this day. The guy is made to feel like he cannot make a scene. I would and I have done before a few years ago. the only difference that night in the restaraunt I used to go to frequently was there was a candle lit on the table. A  wee thin scrawny candle, a candle not even worth 50pence.
( am I living up to the good name of a true scotsman here by being tight fisted? lol )

some advice though if ye got yer burd some flowers.
Cut about an inch and a half off the bottom of the flowers before sticking in water, or get a hammer and bash the flower stem at the bottom.
Why?
Because when flowers get cut from the ground they start healing where they were cut so they cannot absorb as much water as they should to last longer. And it is the same when you take them out the water buckets in the shops, once they start to dry they start healing.

bash them and add that wee sachet of food ye get with them and they will last longer, also change the water every couple of days.

Ken

ye get some that are cut out for the job and others just get by from pretending

Re: Roses!

Lovely Story Alvee,

If you hadn't done what you did with love , you would not have created such a wonderful story to relate plus the memory of same.

Congrats on the 25 years.

Re: Roses!

Hey, very intersting comments on Valentine's Day customs from jolly good Scotland (loved that hammer bashing idea, Braveheart!},  and from the distinguished Irish lady! And I thought, that this day had only gotten out of hand here in the U.S.

No, I'm no grouch (the guy who stole Christmas): So I came home with two sixpacks of Pilsener Urquell for the ladies, plus some mint icecream for myself. What a celebration...

A colleague at work helps out at a flower shop and told me about his best customer, who charges flowers on two different Visa cards. He has one bouquet sent to a special lady, the other one is for his wife. Now, that's what you get when you don't have enough relaxation at home! Guilty Pleasures.

Re: Roses!

No flowers at the Ossuary this year!

As for what all those different flowers and colours mean, well!

Can't I just look and think "They're pretty" and buy some?  It's all too complicated for this simple man!

cool

I'm the son of rage and love

Re: Roses!

Hey UYk,

Do you want a job? lol  Your mainly right about flowerstems.  But you only bash the real thick woody ones. Some hollows you fill with water and plug.
Lots of flower stems are now sealed. As the lie in cold storage so long before auctions and delivery.  Yes! they do double nearly in price for Valentines and Mothers day.
Most flowers are 2/3 days old when you purchase anyway. NEVER buy from a garage shop. Most expensive least cared for.
Roses should always be clipped, The end stems plunged into cold water then
hot for 10 seconds back to cold again. They last for ages this way. If you have no sachet food, good old lemonade or a spoon of sugar in water. works just as good. The beautiful Gerbera, should have a rose wire threaded up into the stem to keep upright.
Tomorrow morning the class is "Corsages" and Handtied" lol lol Dont be late now ill start without ye".

Old Doll.

Bonedaddy! Ossuary? we know them in the business for holding cremated ashes. Ya haven't commited another Valentines Massacre? lol

Re: Roses!

No flowers this year for the wife and kids. Instead we went to an indoor water park. We took my little sister and her boyfriend as well. It was rather fun for all of us, getting to swim and go down a ton of water slides in the middle of February. However for the wife I had my sister watch our kids in the hotel room for about an hour so me and the wife could go down to the hot tub, with the wet bar, and we got us a few drinks and went outside! Snow coming down all over the place and us outside in our swim wear relaxing in the hot tub. Was simply the best thing we have got to do in a LONG time.

Then when we got home on Valentines day, I went to the liquor store and got the fixins for her favorite drink and we just sat on the couch and watched a movie while enjoying a drink.

We live uneventful lives. Three kids will tend to do that for ya.

Re: Roses!

Roses are one of my favourite flowers and I can well understand how they have come to associated with love.
Never knew all the simbolic meanings of colours and such.
What I don't like about them Lena is the fact that I can't grow them that well in my garden. I have about 15 or so of different kinds and they all suffer from Blackspot in the late Summer and drop their leaves.
Tried all the different remedies nothing seems to work.
Still I will keep them they are such a beauitful flower when in bloom.

Hi lena

No thanks on the job offer lol
I was an assisant manager in a garden centre for 11 years so I have done my time with flowers and petals and buds and composts, bird tables, shrubs, trees, advice, deadheading, repotting, lawncare, weed control, putting on a friendly smile when i was angry, dealing with silly complaints, taking care of thousands of ££££'s that was not even mine,

Na, I like my job in the printers, there are no flowers apart from the plastic ones when you walk in the door.

lol

Oh yeah, I have my flight booked for Ireland.

I will send ye an e mail and tell ye all about it.

Re: Roses!

Aromatherapy for roses? I thought that was just a big pile o horse manure round the rose bed.

Shows how much I know.

Is anything really made up of zeros and ones??

Re: Roses!

That was my thought as well Alvee. Works for other plants.

Re: Roses!

Hi Badeye/Ark,

Im finally getting back to this one.

Well first of all, you must use ESSENTIAL OIL. None of the cheap stuff often sold as essential. You will purchase this in A health Store.

For black spot /leaf mould/ or any leaf problem Mix a few Drops of tee tree
oil with water and spray.  If you have a lot to spray, then make a gallon up with 20 drops of tee tree added to water.. If you also have greenfly then add
some drops of Lemongrass OR Lemon essential oil. All kinds of insects and mice hate this stuff.
To revive a wilting plant, feed with a mix of water and some eucalyptus
added. Gives a plant new vigor.

Then you do as i do , sit in the garden {weather Permitting} and play your guitar. lol

Happy Gardening.

Re: Roses!

Thanks for that Lena. I will certainly have a go with what you suggested for Blackspot
Tried mostly everything else. The other ones sound interesting to.
