Topic: THE WHO AM I POEM

1) Dear friends, I am as told before, a non English speaking man, but I try hard to make poetry even not being a poet. There are so many great poems written here, so I love to give you a subject, in which you can find reality, joy, sadness.
2) It makes me feel happy to see that this section is becoming far more popular than I thought.
I try to read them all, and now and then I love to suggest a poem like the "who am I" poem.
I really am happy, a lot of us write about love, pain, personal things, but also about other things.
So here again a thread where you can describe yourselves, your life.

I was born in fact squeezed out my mum's belly
the first thing I heard was a song of Leadbelly
I was naked and so I heard them saying it's a boy
Why and how they saw it I still don't know, was it a decoy?

A few days later I was home, a priest and people I didn't know
they made me wet and I was scared, was this a decoy?
Once back home they start to throw and grabbed me back as a big jo-jo
Speaking a language, very weird and sounding as di da do

Next stop was in kindergarten, in a local school
Hey, I was a smart kid and they made me look like fool
we all got a stool, a tool and yes that was pretty cool
making drawings and objects fingerpainting and going to the pool

at the age of 6 we all moved up to a bigger place and oh so great
there were a lot of us, in groups, and rooms and a new classmate
we learned to read, to write and using numbers, purpose was to graduate
as time passed by 50 little eyes looking at a clock and then of course the gate

Again, at twelve we changed again to a new school it looked all so big
it was a culture shock all new teachers and priests, one looked like a pig
I learned about the ancients, the Greeks, the Romans and every year a gig
Six years long, an eternity, thinking I knew everything but feeling as a twig

Now there was a crossroad, should I leave or should I go
The choice was difficult it was at least 35 years ago
become a priest, not for me, too many sins and a real macho
Why not going to become a doc, just like my dad, we both loved staus quo

So the university or is it college, I never understood
I started to study harder than a person should
But soon there were a lot of events, for a student like me, no good
Too many bars, booze and a lot of sisters from the hood

I had one purpose I promised my parents to succeed
So blessed with a good memory and pretty women they agreed
you're old enough my son, if there is something that you want or need
please call us, inform us and talk and nobody is worried

Finally I am just a simple man who used to be a doc
I started early finished late, a race against the clock
one things for sure I wasn't part of a big, big flock
I ended up, a car, a tree and all I do today is rock

Re: THE WHO AM I POEM

hi doc,

your english may not be to her majesty's standard, but you get your point across very well, your life story in a 2 minute poem? sounds like a good thread to me, i'll get my thinking cap on tomorrow as i have a gig to get to tonight.

nice one doc

Ask not what Chordie can do for you, but what you can do for Chordie.

Re: THE WHO AM I POEM

Thanks a lot for the positive critic on my English.
One of the most important facts that if you compare my first topics versus the topics now, there you will find a huge difference.
Since chordie I learned so much of "Shakespeare's" language. I learned
1) maybe thousand words, I translate them to know what they mean. Also am I a fast learner
2) I always loved English
3) I don't translate from Dutch into English
4) I learned a lot about phrases (to write them more correct)
5) During my US trips, I can "mimic" even dialects, and I was asked a few times from which state I was.
A funny thing: in MISSOURI the northern accent changes into a southern accent.
I HAVE TO THANK ALL OF YOU for improving my "linguistic" skills

Re: THE WHO AM I POEM

Lieven

On other forum I get told to speak "proper english", but I will always rebel against speaking " the queens english", I type how I speak and no one will convince me I am wrong for doing so.
Just because the queens speaks the way she does does not mean we all have to follow.

It is also true that  non speaking english people that are learning english will speak it better, or more proper than native english speaking people.
native, or antural speaking english folk. i.e british, american, irish, australian etc will speak they way they will and not to the way that non english folk are taught.
I know a swiss guy that says he has still to visit a country that speaks english and understand what they are sayting. This is not because of how good or how bad they speak or how the accent sounds it is because of the dialects, there are so many various forms of this international language that people that are taught it find it hard to understand.

I will use the words Ye instead of you, aye instead of yes, dinny instead of do not, canny instead of cannot, willny instead of will not, as well as many other scottish dialect.
i am sick of folk in other forum telling me i do not speak/ type properly. If they read a bit more carefully they would understand what I am saying.

So anyway the jist of this rant is to say "your english is very very good".
Only thing if I have to be honesyt with you is you type in CAPITALS a bit too much for words and leaves me thinking WHY? lol
this may not be a bad thing, it is just a personal thing that I cannot understand, but then I am sure I type things that some think " why does he type that" or like that.

Oh yeah and celtic won 2-0 today so I have been celebrating. Mostly the reason for me not making this a bit shorter lol

stopping now

Re: THE WHO AM I POEM

Here's my bit:

I guess if I had to describe myself in a poem
I guess most of the time I like being alone
It's not that I'm rude, Ive just nothing to say.
Unless it's to my kids, which is usally" Go outside and play"
I was born in Pisa, Italy but I'm not Italian
Raised in Germany, and no I'm not poutin'
I wish I was there instead of here.
I like where I live even though its not near
A beach or an ocean cuz I love to swim
But we've got good fishen' so throw your line in
Im the youngest of 8 and were spread all around
I used to have a twin but he died along time ago,now
4 sisters, 2 brothers, both fighting a war
Is this poem getting boring, if so read no more!
I started guitar,I guess, at age ten
My parents didnt' like it so I had to keep it from them
And now that I can play Hank Williams and John Prine
They say theyve supported me this whole stinking time
I guess that's enough, cuz I'm thinking about this to much
Thanks to Doc Phil, whose english brought this up

Re: THE WHO AM I POEM

Great thread G-Doc.

I won't add my life poem as nobody would believe it, particularly the rhyme schemes ; )

"5) During my US trips, I can "mimic" even dialects, and I was asked a few times from which state I was.  "

Well, first time I was in Toronto, I was asking a guy ( who had an Italian accent you could whip ice cream with ) where the subway station was and after a few minutes of chat he says to me.

"You know, I can tell you're not a native English speaker - well done !"

UYK,

I know where you are coming from, did you hear Paxman recently described Rabbie Burns' language as "doggerel."

Accents kind of make you stand out. That was a bad thing for me in the seventies in England where you immediately came under suspicion and would get grief from the dimmer elements in bars and snooker halls. However, more recently the Belfast accent has developed an added frisson as a result of the success of Liam Neeson and James Nesbitt - ladies in London do like to hear you talk. It's something to do with a hint of danger and that wee bit of Belfast cheek.

Re: THE WHO AM I POEM

Awesome Lieven!!!!!!! Good stuff wild man.

and Alan, not to nit-pick but you're givin' improper credit to this;

"What's so funny 'bout peace, love and understandin' ."    Elvis Costello

it's actually penned by Nick Lowe

My personal poem;

I am me, me is is I
ain't no girl, I'm is a guy
Music is in me, me is in music

Family is my first, number one in my life
My dog, my kids, my beautiful wife
Lucky am I, I am lucky

Guitars excite me, raise goose bumps on me skin
I'll play 'em for 4 hours, then I'll do it again
Music is my food, food is my music

minus the girl scout cookies and sushi............................WASABI!!!!!!!!

Give everything but up.
