Topic: how do u read the tabs???

how the do u read this?

i want to play numb of linkin park but i don't know how to play this

what are the numbers for??  and how do do i play it then?

please help me

Re: how do u read the tabs???

The numbers you see represent the fret position for your finger on the string indicated. e.g if there is a number 5 like so   ----5---- you should press down on the 5th fret, a number ----3---- press down on the 3rd fret and play that string. I wouldn't know how to play that particular song though.

I'm really crap at explaining things but I Hope that helps a bit.  <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_smile.gif" border=0 alt="Smile">

ive just started playing since 6 months or so and now i want to do something a bit harder than the lessons im following

thx again man

Re: how do u read the tabs???

ive still got some questions left (although i do get it a bit better)

  G--------------------------

  D--------------------------

  A----------------3---------   x3

  E----5-----1----------3----

play that heavy with brads guitar then in the verse with mikes piano,

then for the last time round in the verse play...

  Verse part 2

  G-----------------------------------

  D-----------------------------------

  A------3-----3--1---3--5------3-----   x1

  E---3----5-----------------3----5---

the g, d, a and e are the strings but where is g and which one is the E??

can u read a rythim in this thing?

so its only one string u need to press at a time in this song? in fret that it says (example: 3)

i think thats bout it.

Re: how do u read the tabs???

Assuming that Bass works in the same way as a six string the E will be the top string as you play, i.e the one nearest your chin (hope it's not too close though).

For the first part you would fret at the 5th on the top string, play it once, then fret the 1st string and play that one. Drop down a string and fret at the 3rd fret play it and back up too the E string at the 3rd fret.  The X3 means you do all that 3 times before going on to the next part. Try it with your pinkie for the 5th, Index finger for the 1st and ring finger for the two frets at the 3rd.

So; E is the string nearest yer chin, G is the string nearest yer thing (assuming yer a bloke) <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_wink.gif" border=0 alt="Wink"> You only need to play one string at a time for this example and sorry, but nope, I can't read a  rhythmn there.....only cos I don't know the song though.

Have a listen too the song and I'll bet you can work out the rhythmn now you know where your fingers are going.

Hope this helps you.  <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_smile.gif" border=0 alt="Smile">

Re: how do u read the tabs???

so u only hit one string? and not all 6?

thx this will really do after the answers ive got from u, this will really keep me playing (and maybe make a good guitar player)

and the question u have been waiting for: i am a bloke  <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_biggrin.gif" border=0 alt="Very Happy">

Re: how do u read the tabs???

Yep. When it is tabbed in that manner you only play one string. If you are meant to play more than one string at the same time it would show the numbers like this, one above the other.....

----4----

----4----

---------

---------    meaning you would fret the two strings at the fourth and play them.

happy to have helped.    <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_smile.gif" border=0 alt="Smile">

Re: how do u read the tabs???

This should make you all laugh. I played guitar for a few years err 35 years ago and wondered what the numbers ment  <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_cry.gif" border=0 alt="Crying or Very Sad">

Sooo now I get the idea  <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_surprised.gif" border=0 alt="Surprised">

Cannot play guitar anymore because left finger next to pinky damaged to a permanent claw and I liked beltin' away at bar chords.

Haha, could never play an acoustic guitar, found frets too close and strange flat keyboards. Liked and still do my old '64 Hofner Verithin. Had a mindset that all chords and runs began on the 5th fret  <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_smile.gif" border=0 alt="Smile"> .

Now started on bass, like so much gettin' a fretless from USA.

Found this site looking up Badfingers Baby Blue song.

Thanks to you guys I now know what the notation means  <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_biggrin.gif" border=0 alt="Very Happy">

Think I will just pick out a few runs and repeat them, haha how to annoy guitarists!  <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_rolleyes.gif" border=0 alt="Rolling Eyes">  man, what's that stupid axe player think he's doin'?

Re: how do u read the tabs???

I've been playing guitar for a while and I just got into reading tabs, It opens up a whole new world of playing. ( I do hope I get better though.) <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_biggrin.gif" border=0 alt="Very Happy">

Re: how do u read the tabs???

I bet you get better fast. Few can get worse, hard to get worse but I worked hard at it and managed   <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_cry.gif" border=0 alt="Crying or Very Sad">

Agree, dem dere tabs make it easy! Rotten hard work sitting listening to runs over and over trying to get them right.

Wow, now for some fun times, errr lead guitar runs on an axe  <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_twisted.gif" border=0 alt="Twisted Evil">

Re: how do u read the tabs???

i started playing like 6 months ago, so the songs i try are a bit to hard, but its much more fun to do this than the things i do in my lessons i take.

well, lets all thank moddish about this, we couldn't have done it without him  <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_biggrin.gif" border=0 alt="Very Happy">
