Topic: Higher Action

Hello everyone

I bought a nice Acoustic Fender a few months back and have noticed in the past few weeks that the action has become higher than it was when i got it, resulting in making my fingers ache like hell after playing it for prolonged periods of time.  Can anyone please tell me if this is normal and whether there is a simple way to put it back to where it was; or do I need to take it in to have some someone sort it out properly?

Many thanks!

Re: Higher Action

i had this problem to. You should check your neck to make sure its straight if the top of your neck is bent upwards due to the tension in strings. i didnt pay anything for it to be staightened. But i did get it restrung with a lighter strings and then straightened (truss rod) i payed £12 ($24) for it to be restrung properly. best advice i could give would be go see someone in a guitar shop who can repair them or give better advice than me im still a beginner maybe someone on hear could help with better advice than me.

Re: Higher Action

I had a simular problem with my Martin, it developed a slight buzz in 2 strings and the action went downhill about a year or so after I bought it. Part of the problem was humidity, the rest was solved be getting a guitar tech to "tune it up". Total cost...$50.00.   Results, priceless.

Re: Higher Action

good thread!

I am wondering if anyone here tightens or losens their truss rod themself.( Never knew it was called that until jimmyriddlementioned it)

I ws tempted a few years ago to do thi to change the action but chickened out in case I completely knackered the guitar.

Are these things best just left to a guitar technician?

ye get some that are cut out for the job and others just get by from pretending

Re: Higher Action

Typically on an acoustic you want to go to a tech or luither. Most (not all) acoustic truss rods are acesses through the sound hole of the guitar.  If you over tighten them they will snap and you will have to take off the finger board to replace them.

It is cheaper to replace a neck(bolt on electric) than do a fret replacement or change out a finger board. If you do decide to it turn it counter clockwise 1/8 of a turn. Don't try it if your not comfortable with your skills.

Bootlegger.

Re: Higher Action

Cheers for that guys!  Probably best if I take it in to be sorted out I think, wouldn't trust myself to do it without completely buggering the guitar up!  At least I'll have someone else to blame that way!

Cool name tho eh!?  'Truss Rod'!

Cheers
