Slaid Cleaves is a singer/songwriter originally from South Berwick, Maine. An alumnus of Tufts University, he currently resides in Austin, Texas.
In 1992, Cleaves was among the winners of the prestigious New Folk competition at the Kerrville Folk Festival, an award previously given to such artists as Nanci Griffith, Robert Earl Keen and Steve Earle.
He rose to national prominence when he had an Americana charts hit with Broke Down that he co-wrote with childhood friend Rod Picott.
He tours nationally performing solo and with a band in many configurations.
