Founded by ex-Ensiferum frontman Jari Mäenpää, Wintersun is a Finnish Viking/Power metal band with melodic black metal, power metal, folk metal and progressive metal influences. The first Wintersun album, which was self-titled, was scheduled for recording on a certain date, however the Ensiferum Europe tour was unfortunately scheduled for the same time. Jari Mäenpää was forced to choose between his booked recording time for Wintersun and Ensiferum; he chose Wintersun and was forced to leave Ensiferum behind. The album was released on September 13, 2004 through Nuclear Blast Records. According to their website, the band is planning to record their next full-length release at Sonic Pump Studios in May of 2006.
