Dreams Go By Harry Chapin
Here's my first attempt at a contribution. Just hammered it out in my
Dreams Go By- Harry Chapin
Capo Up 2- Play C (True D)
[C]There [Dm]you stand in your dungarees
Loo[C]kin all [G]grown up and so very pleased.
When [C]you write your poems, they hav[Dm]e so much to say
When I [C]hear your dreams, it takes my [G]breath away.
You [F]know I want to be a ballplayer, a [C]regular [Em]sluggin [Am]fool
But I g[Dm]uess our dreams must [G]wait awhile, [F]until we [G]finish [C]school.
[C]And so you and I, we watch our y[Dm]ears go by,
We watch our s[G]weet dreams fly, far [Am]away.
But m[Em]aybe s[G]omeday,
[C]I don'[Dm]t know when, But we can dream again,
And w[G]e'll be h[Am]appy then, [Em]till o[G]ur time, just drifts away.
There you stand in your wedding dress,
You're so beautiful that I must confess
I'm so proud you have chosen me, when a doctor is what you want to be
You know I want to be a painter, girl, a real artistic snob.
But I guess we'll have our children first,
You'll find a home, I'll get a job.
[Am]Listen [Em]to the seasons pa[Am]ssing, listen [Em]to the winds blow,
[Am]Listen to the c[Em]hildren [F]laughing, where d[D]o broke[G]n dreams go?
There you stand in your tailored suit,
So many years go by, but you're still so cute.
You take the car to go and meet the bus,
When the grandchildren come to visit us.
You say you should have been a ballerina, girl,
There are songs I should have sung.
But I guess our dreams have come and gone,
You're supposed to dream when you are young.
