The Rock  Harry Chapin

(capo 3rd fret)
The r[Em]ock is gonna fall on us, [D]he woke with a start
And he [B]ran to his mother, the f[C]ear dark in his heart
He t[Em]old her of the vision that [D]he was sure he'd seen
She [B]said: "Go back to sleep son, you're [C]having [B]a bad dre[Em]am!"
(Silly child...)
[G]Everybody knows the rock leans over the town
[D]Everybody knows that it won't tumble to the ground
[C]Remember Chicken Little said the sky was falling down
Well [B]nothing ever came of that, the [C]world still [B]whirls a[Em]rou[-]nd[C] [-] [Em]
"The [Em]rock is gonna fall on us," he [D]stood and told the class
The [B]professor put his chalk down and [C]peered out through his glasses
But [Em]he went on and said; "I've seen it, [D]high up on the hill
If it [B]doesn't fall this year then [C]very [B]soon it [Em]will!"
(Crazy boy...)
[G]Everybody knows the rock leans over the town
[D]Everybody knows that it won't tumble to the ground
[C]We've more important studies than your fantasies and fears
You [B]know that rock's been perched up there for a [C]hundred [B]thousand yea[Em]rs[-] [C] [-] [Em]
"The [Em]rock is gonna fall on us." He [D]told the magistrates
"I [B]believe that we can stop it but the [C]time is getting late
You [Em]see I've done all the research my [D]plans are all complete."
He was [B]showing them contingencies when they s[C]howed [B]him to the [Em]street
(Just a madman...)
[G]Everybody knows the rock leans over the town
[D]Everybody knows that it won't tumble to the ground
[C]Everybody knows of those who say the end is near
[B]Everybody knows that life goes on as [C]usual [B]round [Em]here
(Am 8x's)
He [Am]went up on the mountain [G]beside the giant stone
They [D]knew he was insane so they l[Em]eft him all alone
He'd [Am]given up enlisting help for [G]there was no one else
He s[D]pent his days devising ways to [Em]stop the rock himself
One [Am]night while he was working building b[G]races on the ledge
The g[D]round began to rumble the rock tr[B]embled on the e[Em]dge
"The [Em]rock is going to fall on us! [D]Run or you'll be crushed!"
And i[B]ndeed the rock was moving, cr[C]umbling all to dust.
He ran u[Em]nder it with one last hope that [D]he could add a prop
And [B]as he disappeared the [C]rock [B]came to a s[Em]top
The [Em]people ran into the street but [D]by then all was still
The r[B]ock seemed where it always was or [C]where it always will be
When s[Em]omeone asked where he had gone they s[D]aid: "Oh he was daft.
Who [B]cares about that crazy fool." And [C]then they'd[B] start to l[Em]augh
But [Am]high up on the mountain when the [G]wind is hitting it
If you're w[D]atching very closely the r[B]ock slips a little [Em]bit
