Passing Afternoon  Iron & Wine

Passing Afternoon
Iron And Wine.
This is a response to the other chords posted for this song, which are technically
However, instead of starting with D without a Capo, Put a Capo on the 2nd Fret and play
chords so you can leave the B string open throughout most of the song, as it is on the
Sounds more accurate this way, but the other way is fine if you prefer it. What I'm
F#/ D is played like so (it's technically a D):
[E] [2]
[A]D [5]0
G 0
B 0
E x
Otherwise, it's pretty self explanatory... Have fun, remember Capo 2nd. And, one thing
Sam Beam does a lot that isn't absolutely necessary but sounds nice: On the C and G
hit the harmony of the 3rd with a hammer on from the 2nd on the "3" beat (i.e. play a C,
the third string open and hammer on the second fret on the 3 count- same with G but
a string). I realize that I'm not good at explaining this in type but if you know what
saying, it's actually very common and very easy.
[C] [F#/D]
There[G] are times th[C]at walk from you Like some passing afternoon
[G]Summer warmed the open window[F#D] Of her honeymoon[C] [D]
[C] [F#/D]
And sh[G]e chose a ya[C]rd to burn But the ground remembers her
[A] [F#/D]
Wooden spoons[D], her children stir her Bougainvillea blooms
[C] [F#/D]
There[G] are things t[C]hat drift away Like our endless numbered days
[G] [F#/D]
Autumn blew t[D]he quilt right off the Perfect bed she made
[C] [F#/D]
And s[G]he's chosen t[C]o believe In the hymns her mother sings
[G] [F#/D]
Sunday pulls [D]it's children from the Piles of fallen leaves
[C] [F#/D]
There[G] are sailing [C]ships that pass All our bodies in the grass
[G] [F#/D]
Springtime ca[D]lls her children 'til she Let's 'em go at last
[C] [F#/D]
And s[G]he's chosen w[C]here to be Though she's lost her wedding ring
[G] [F#/D]
Somewhere nea[D]r her misplaced jar of Bougainvillea seeds
[C] [F#/D]
There[G] are things w[C]e can't recall Blind as night that finds us all
[G] [F#/D]
Winter tucks [D]her children in her Fragile china dolls
[C] [F#/D]
But m[G]y hands remem[C]ber hers Rolling around the shady ferns
[G] [F#/D]
Naked arms ar[D]e secrets still like Songs I'd never learned
[C] [F#/D]
There[G] are names ac[C]ross the sea Only now I do believe
[G] [F#/D]
Sometimes wit[D]h the window closed She'll sit and think of me
[C] [F#/D]
But s[G]he'll mend hi[C]s tattered clothes And they'll kiss as if they know
[G] [F#/D]
A baby sleeps[D] in all our bones So scared to be alone
