The Bricklayer's Song  The Corries

This is a correction of phoenix1984's upload
Capo wherever's comfortable for your voice - it's in different places in every
recording I've heard.
Dear [C]Sir I write this note to you to t[G]ell you of my pl[C]ight
For [F]at the time of wri[C]ting it, I[G]'m not a pretty sight
My b[F]ody is all b[C]lack and blue, my f[F]ace a deathly gr[Am]ey
And I wr[C]ite this note to say why I am n[G]ot at work to[C]day
While wo[C]rking on the fourteenth floor some br[G]icks I had to cl[C]ear
But to[F]ssing them down from s[C]uch a height w[G]as not a good idea
The for[F]eman wasn't v[C]ery pleased, he [F]is an awkward [Am]sod
And he sa[C]id I had to cart them down the la[G]dders in me h[C]od
Well cle[C]aring all these bricks by hand, it w[G]as so very s[C]low
So I hois[F]ted up a ba[C]rrel and se[G]cured a rope below
But [F]in me haste to d[C]o the job, I w[F]as too blind to [Am]see
That a ba[C]rrel full of building bricks was he[G]avier than [C]me
And s[C]o when I untied the rope the ba[G]rrel fell like l[C]ead
And cli[F]nging tightly [C]to the rope, I sta[G]rted up instead
I sho[F]t up like a r[C]ocket, and to [F]my dismay I f[Am]ound
That ha[C]lfway up I met the bloody ba[G]rrel coming d[C]own
Well the ba[C]rrel broke me shoulder, as [G]to the ground it s[C]ped
And w[F]hen I reached the [C]top I banged the pu[G]lley with me head
But I c[F]lung on tightly nu[C]mb with shock from t[F]his almighty b[Am]low
While the ba[C]rrel spilled out half its bricks some four[G]teen floors bel[C]ow
[C]When these bricks had fallen from the ba[G]rrel to the fl[C]oor
I th[F]en outweighed the ba[C]rrel and so sta[G]rted down once more
But I cl[F]ung on tightly to t[C]he rope me b[F]ody racked with p[Am]ain
And ha[C]lfway down I met the bloody b[G]arrel once a[C]gain
Now the fo[C]rce of this collision halfway do[G]wn the office blo[C]ck
Ca[F]used multiple abr[C]asions and a nas[G]ty case of shock
But I cl[F]ung on tightly to t[C]he rope as I f[F]ell towards the gro[Am]und
And I la[C]nded on the broken bricks the ba[G]rrel had scattered ro[C]und.
Now [C]as I lay there on the ground I tho[G]ught I'd passed the w[C]orst
But the ba[F]rrel hit the pu[C]lley wheel and th[G]en the bottom burst
A sh[F]ower of bricks rained do[C]wn on me I d[F]idn't have a h[Am]ope
As I l[C]ay there bleeding on the ground I let [G]go of the bloody rope[C]
The ba[C]rrel now being heavier so sta[G]rted down once m[C]ore
It la[F]nded right acr[C]oss me as I l[G]ay there on the floor
It b[F]roke three ribs and m[C]y left arm and [F]I can only s[Am]ay
I h[C]ope you`ll understand why I am n[G]ot at work t[C]oday
