Drive South  John Hiatt

DRIVE SOUTH - John Hiatt

 ------------------------

NB This is played in "dropped-G" tuning (low to high EADEBE)
Intro riff - see tab
[E5]
[A] I didn't say we wouldn't [D]hurt any [A]more
that's how you [E5]learn - you jut get burned
[A] We don't have to feel like [D]dirt any [A]more
Though love's not [E5]earned, baby, it's our turn
[B5]We were always [Badd6]looking [B5]for too long[Badda6] [B5]
With our [A5]heads in the [Aadd6]clouds,[A] just a little off [Aadd6]course[A]
[B5] But I've left that [Badd6]motor [B5]running, now if you're [Badd6]feeling [B5]down and [A5]out
[D]Oh come on baby drive [E]south[E/G#], with the one you [A]love[B]
Oh come on baby drive [E]south[E/G#], with the one you [A]love[B]
I'm not talking about retreating, little girl
Gonna take our stand in this chevy bang
Windows open on the rest of the world
Holding hands all the way to dixie land
We've been trying to turn our lives around
Since we were little kids, it's been wearing us down
Don't turn away now darling, let's fire it up and wind it out
[D] And I heard your momma calling[A]: I think she was just stalling
[E5] Don't know who she was talking to [B]- baby me and you?
[D] We can go down with a smile on[A]; don't bother to pack your nylons
[E5] Just keep those pretty legs showing [B]- it gets hot down where we're going
Better believe it [E5]babe!
We were always looking for too long
With our heads in the clouds, just a little off course
But I've left that motor running, so if you're feeling down and out
Come on baby drive south....

The following is the introductory acoustic guitar solo from the Budokan
version. Like the song itself, it's very banjo-like, facilitated by the
altered tuning. A melody line is played and intermingled with lots of droning
notes above it. I have notated the melody line, but not the flurry of open E
and B strings above it. I'm not too sure if I'm explained this very well, but
listen to the album and you should find it pretty straightforward- just a
matter of constantly bashing away at the E and B strings throughout: if it
doesn't come naturally, I doubt if a full tab would do any good. The
interlude is notated in the same manner.
