Tuning: D# The Tuning is 1/2 step down and the B string is tuned to C#
C# Yes, this is important. It may not be the correct tuning but it
F# is way easier to play.

Chorus:
-------------3---------------2-------------------------2-----------------------------| -----------------0-----------0---------0---------------0-------------2--------2------| -0------0------------0-------2-----2-------2-----------2----2------------0-----------| -0---------------------------0------------------0------0---------0-------------------| -2-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------| -3-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------| --------------------------------------------:|| -0--------------0---------------------------:|| Rinse & -5-----5------------5-----------------------:|| Repeat -5---------5-------------5------------------:|| -3------------------------------------------:|| --------------------------------------------:||
Interlude: (This Section is muted with the palm)
---------------------------------------------------| --2--2--0--0----------2p0-----2--0-----------------| ----------------5p0--------0---------0h5p0---------| ---------------------------------------------------| ---------------------------------------------------| ---------------------------------------------------|
After 4 times played, the interlude is overdubbed once more.
Then, goes to something like this...
( Tab from: http://www.guitartabs.cc/tabs/d/don_henley/the_boys_of_summer_tab_ver_3.html )
---------------------------------------------------| --2--2--0--0--------2p0-----2----0-----------------| ---------------5p0-------0------------5------------| ---------------------------------------------------| ---------------------------------------------------| ---------------------------------------------------|
Small Lead Part during break:
------------------------------------------------------------------------| --12--------------------------------------------------------------------| ------h16---14--------------14p11h12p11---------------------------------| --------------------------------------------h14---12h14p12------12h14---| ------------------------------------------------------------h14---------| ------------------------------------------------------------------------| ----------------------------------------------------------| ----------------------------------------------------------| ------------------12----12---12---14---16-----------------| -----14--14--14---12---(14---------------)---14-----------| -----14--14--14------------------------------14-----------| ----------------------------------------------------------|
No idea if this last part of the lead is right but I think it's close.
Outro: (Keep in mind that the Chorus is playing at the same time, so you'll here the
other arpeggios as well.)
------------------------------------------------------------------| ------------------------------------------------------------------| ---16---14~~~16---12--------12---16---14~~~16---12-------12-------| ------------------------12-----------------------------12---------| ------------------------------------------------------------------| ------------------------------------------------------------------|
Then...The fancy part in between
-------------------------------------------------------------------| -------------------------------------------------------------------| --------12---------12---------12-----12--14--16--14--12------------| --12h14-----12h14------12h14-----12----------------------12--------| -------------------------------------------------------------------| -------------------------------------------------------------------|
And...The Second little fancy part
-----------------------------------------------------------| -----------------------------------------------------------| -----------------------------------------------------------| --16--14~~~~12--------------12--------12--14---------------| -----------------12---12h14-----12h14----------------------| -----------------------------------------------------------|
Well, there you have it. I think this is pretty accurate. Tuning the B string up to C#
really helps.
Also, if you want the same tone as the song, it's real easy. I use one of those compressor/limiter
pedals and compress the line a little. Send that signal straight into a mixer or
ANYTHING BUT a guitar amp
because it's a direct line he's using.
