Hoping Machine  Jay Farrar

From the ?New Multitudes? album (Jay Farrar, Will Johnson, Anders Parker, & Yim Yames)
Lyrics by Woody Guthrie
Music by Jay Farrar
Tabs by Tim Prizer (tim_prizer@yahoo.com)
***Farrar recorded this song in an alternate tuning. This is as close as I could come
to translating the song into standard tuning, and I think it sounds quite nice. Please
pay close attention to the chord fingerings, as they are all slight variations on the
standard major chords and require that you hit the bass notes ? my effort to come as close as
possible to reproducing the heavy bass sound of the alternate tuning.

 [F]: x-3-3-2-1-x--|
 [C]: 3-3-2-0-1-x--|
 [G]: 3-2-0-0-0-x--|
 [F*]: 1-3-3-2-1-1-|

Intro**: [F] [C] [F] [C] [F] [C]
[F] [C]
**(Though it?s far from perfect, I mimic Jay?s hammers and slides in the intro by
hammering the 3rd string on the 2nd fret on the very first strum and then, in making the
transition from the [F] to the [C], hammering the 4th string on the 2nd fret and then
striking it open before hitting the [C] chord. Listen and play around with it to see what
I mean.)
[F] Don?t let anything knock your [C] props out from under you
[F] Always keep your mind clear, let your [C] plans come out of mistakes
[F] These are the plans that [C] nothing can tear down
[F] Made out of things that have already [C] been torn down
[F*] Whatever you do and wherever [C] you go
[F*] Don?t lose your grip on life, and that [C] means
[G] Don?t let any earthly calamity [F*] knock your dreamer and your hoping [C] machine
(Intro chords again): [F] [C] [F] [C] [F] [C]
[F] [C]
[F] Music is the language of the [C] mind that travels
[F] It carries the key to the laws [C] of time and space
[F] Lonesome train whistling down the [C] silent wail of wind
[F] Life is the sound, creation has [C] been a song
[F*] Whatever you do and wherever [C] you go
[F*] Don?t lose your grip on life, and that [C] means
[G] Don?t let any earthly calamity [F*] knock your dreamer and your hoping [C] machine
Out of [G] order
Out of [F*] order
Out of [C] order
Out of [G] order
Out of [F*] order
Out of [C] order
[F] Be quick to manufacture new [C] schemes and ideas
[F] Faster than any turn of [C] tide can wash you out
[F] The word is the music and the [C] people are the song
[F] Tomorrow?s chances feel like a singing [C] god
[F*] Whatever you do and wherever [C] you go
[F*] Don?t lose your grip on life, and that [C] means
[G] Don?t let any earthly calamity [F*] knock your dreamer and your hoping [C] machine
Out of [G] order
Out of [F*] order
Out of [C] order
Out of [G] order
Out of [F*] order
Out of [C] order
Out of [G] order
Out of [F*] order
Out of [C] order
Out of [G] order

Out of [C] order
(Intro chords to finish): [F] [C] [F] [C]
