Song Starts With This Progression:
[Am] [E] [C] [G]

[Am] [E] [C] [G]

(listen to the song for the rythym)
I'll tell it [Am]like it happened, it was Darius and Noland and [Dm]me,
Just a f[E]ew po' boys trying to get up out of Missour[Am]i.
Took 55 t[Am]o Louisiana, stopped down by the highway to ea[Dm]t.
They both [E]had crawfish. Strictly chicken for[Am] me.
Back out un[Am]der thunderheads, the radio was Southern s[Dm]oul.
They interr[Am]upted Clarence Carter with a strange-ass local[C] show.
They were [E]sayin'...
"Come d[Am]own to Lake Pon[E]tchartrain.
Rest yo[C]ur soul and feed yo[G]ur brain.
That's [Am]where you will ge[E]t to see
Everyth[C]ing the wate[G]r can[Am] be."
The rain was[Am] comin' down, the wind was howlin' outside of Slidel[Dm]l.
It was the k[E]ind of night that makes you think the whole world's goin'[Am] to hell.
We got off[Am] on an exit 'cause we couldn't read the map so great[Dm].
Near the C[E]hoctaw Motel, we parked to deliberat[Am]e,
When out o[Am]f the bayou came a man like the lake had a tong[Dm]ue.
He was righ[E]t up on the glass, all yellow-eyed, black teeth, [Am]bangin' on the windshield,
Screamin' like a demon at the top of his lung[E]s,
"Come[Am] down to Lake Pontchar[E]train.
Rest y[C]our soul and feed yo[G]ur brain.
Free fo[Am]r you and all your [E]friends.
Crawfi[C]sh 'til the bitte[G]r end.
Come do[Am]wn to Lake Pontch[E]artrain.
Wade [C]to where the shall[G]ows break.
That's [Am]where you will get[E] to see
Everyt[C]hing the water[G] can b[Am]e."
I was drivin' out of there as fast as a Camry coul[Dm]d,
But the interstate [E]was flooded, so I had to take the road through the woo[Am]ds.
Bad move [Am]in retrospect; the road disappeared in the rai[F]n,
And I stood[E] on the brakes when I saw the sign:
"Lake Pon[E]tchartrain..."
Darius was [Am]yelling that he saw somebody out in the swells;
He jumped out, runnin', and Noland was goin[E]' as well.
"Come back[Am]!" Why the hell would they leave the ca[Dm]r?
And that's [E]when I heard it, make no[E] mistake -
The voices w[E]ere calling them from unde[E]r the lake...
"Come down to Lake Pontchartrain...
Come down to Lake Pontchartrain...
Come down to Lake Pontchartrain...
Come down to Lake Pontchartrain..."
The crawfis[Am]h were screaming, the waves dan[Dm]ced in time.
My friends [E]went in deeper; the water, it cli[Am]mbed.
I watched i[Am]n terror; the lake op[Dm]ened wide,
And horribl[E]y roaring, it pulled them[Am] inside.
That's how[Am] it happened! Why would [F]I lie?
There were [E]no bodies, I've got non[Am]e to hide.
I'm just [Dm]a poor boy, lost his friends[Am] in the rain.
Any more [E]questions, just go and ask Lake Pontchartra[Am]in.
And it ends with this progression:
[Am] [G] [C] [Am]

And thats it! This is my attempt to learn it by ear, feel free to correct me, Peace.
