See my tab of the intro to learn how to play that.
down_in_the_valley_intro_ver3_tab.htm) This covers the chord
progression of the rest of the song. Some of the names of the chords diagramed below may
not be 100% correct, but it is how they are played in the song. Call them what you
want, I
couldn't figure out what their technical names were.
Also, hammer on the second fret with the second finger as he plays the C chords at
certain points in the song. You can hear it by listening to the song. I didn't think one
hammer-on warranted an entire tab. If you have any questions or corrections, feel free
to email me.
(I figured most of this out by watching this video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJros32de2Q as well as other live performances.)

I [Csus4]wish I was a [C]slave to [Csus4]an age-old [F]trade[C]
Like [Csus4]ridin' around on [C]railcars and [Csus4]workin' long [F]days[C]
[F]Lord have mercy on my [C]rough and rowdy [Csus4]ways[C]
[F]Lord have mercy on my [C]rough and rowdy [Csus4]ways[C]
(Repeat Intro Lick)
Call it [F]one drink too [C]many
Call it [Am]pride of a [C]man[C]
But it [F]don't make no [C]difference if you [Am]sit or you [C]stand[C]
'Cause they [F]both end in trouble and [C]start with a grin[C]
Yeah they [F]both end in trouble and [C]start with a grin[C]
We do it [F]over and [C]over and [Am]over a-[C]gain[C]
We do it [F]over and [C]over and [Am]over a-[C]gain[C]
[F] Oh-oh
[Am] Oh-oh-oh-oh
[C] Oh-oh[Cmaj9]
[F] Oh-oh
[Am] Oh-oh-oh-oh
[C] Oh-oh[Cmaj9]
[F] Oh-oh
[Am] Oh-oh-oh-oh
[C] Oh-oh[Cmaj9]
I know there's [F]- California [Am]- Oklahoma
[C] And all of the places I ain't [Cmaj9]ever been to but
[F] Down in the valley with
[Am] Whiskey rivers
[C] These are the places you will [Cmaj9]find me hidin'
[F] These are the places I will [Am]always go
[C] These are the places I will [Cmaj9]always go
I am [F]on my way
I am [Am]- on my way
I am [C]on my way back to [Cmaj9]where I started
[F](Keep re[Am]peating [C]these ch[Cmaj9]ords)
Oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh
Oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh
(Continue in background)
One more for the stars and the eyes of the walls
I hear your name...
I saw your face in the crowd and you came out
You saw me walkin'...
You got a sign on the door and it reads to me
Just like the grass and the sun and the...
Oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh
Oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh
I am [F]on my way
I am [Am]- on my way
I am [C]on my way back to [Cmaj9]where I started
[F] California [Am]- Oklahoma
[C] And all of the places I ain't [Cmaj9]ever been to but
[F] Down in the valley with
[Am] Whiskey rivers
[C] These are the places you will [Cmaj9]find me hidin'
[F] These are the places I will [Am]always go
[F] These are the places I will [C]always go[C]
So I [F]wish I was a [C]slave to an [Csus4]age-old [C]trade[C]
[F]Lord have [F]mercy on my [C]rough and rowdy [Csus4]ways[C]
