THE BALLAD OF CASEY DEISS Shawn Phillips
style="COLOR: #000000; FONT-SIZE: 11px;">from "Second Contribution" - Shawn Phillips, 1971 The ballad of Casey Deiss Twas a man of youthful features Twas a boy of sorrowful eyes Watching out by looking inward Tall and stately and full of life In his life he spoke but rarely In his mind he cried for light Painting perceptions trying to capture That which he saw in his questioning strife Once in Lisbon, twice in London Travelling around for all of his time Looking for and finding a goddess He took Diana to be his wife Of the children they'd begotten Two had died without knowing life And the third I know not whereof But if she lives, she will yet be kind Casey had a mark of simple value He had a star between his eyes In his hands he held an axe blade The Greek symbol of thunder and fire On a night when the heavens were crying He went out and took his blade Chopping wood to warm his heartside The lightning came and my brother died Bring him no wine from faraway vineyards Tell him no tales of the canyon's might But wish him peace and eternal wisdom For he has died and he died by light. In the booklet to "The Best of..." he writes:"I cannot, to this day, read or write a single note of music." The latest song on this album is "Early in the night" from 1992. Does anybody know where to reach him? with kind regards, Helmut Harnisch, Germany ## CrossPoint v3.02 R ##{e

Shawn used to be a fireman in Austin Texas. Some of his albums include Contibution, 2nd Contribution, Faces, and many others. The title of the 1st song on 2nd Contribution has the longest title of any song, Namely, "She was waiting for her mother at the station in Torino and I know I love you baby, but it's getting too heavy to laugh" (These words do not appear in the song. As stated, he now lives in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Does anybody know the tabs and music to the song "Steel Grey Eyes" by Shawn? If you do, please post it!
