lyrics available at http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=4255 where they give the year as 1965, U.S. chart = #4; U.K. chart = #1.
Pardon the extraneous commas and multiple periods, but chordie is acting up right now, and these are necessary to make the chords appear over the right spots.
I don't feel I can do this song justice without a 12-string; so the guitar solo relies partly on the octave strings of the 4 low string-pairs for continuity of melody; on a 6-string, this passage should be reworked a bit. Note (pun intended!) that the single notes here are usually the ones to emphasize, and the multi-notes should be strummed, and with less emphasis. Of course, if you're lucky enough to have backup, the lead (on a 12 if available) can concentrate on the melody notes, while the rhythm player fills in the chords.
I've been doing this song just about since it was released, and I haven't listened to the recording in decades, so there may well be some idiosyncrasies here that you'd prefer to change to your own liking. F'rinstance, the last line of each verse seems to work well with either Dm-C-Am-F-G-C- or Dm-C-Am-Dm-G7-C-, etc.
On an acoustic, I strongly recommend using these formations, using the thumb on the bass-E string when necessary, and making any necessary transpositions with a capo, but it is do-able in the key of A (instead of C, as herein). If you do this, you'll have to rework all the solo riffs. Be creative!
