City of New Orleans is considered a classic here in the States and I've been playing it almost as long as I've been playing guitar. I have a recording of it done by Steve Goodman ( the man that wrote it) from a radio interview he did in New York in '82. I based my version on that one.

If you thought that version of City of New Orleans was rough on my voice, you should have heard me try it in C. LOL!  That was an immediate trip to the delete key when I started to play it back.

Thanks for your constructive criticism and encouragement on the other songs. That's what this forum is all about to me - a way to have fun and learn from one another in an environment that's friendly and safe.

I need to smooth out Gringo In Belize and Memphis in the Meantime. Both of those were "learned" just for February's challenge. Neither one is smooth, and they both need some sort of solo worked into them (God help me), but they're both really fun songs to play and very well written. Jerry Jeff Walker and John Hiatt don't get the recognition I think they deserve (except maybe among their peers). If you don't know John Hiatt very well, he's got a lot of great songs, like Perfectly Good Guitar about the 80's and 90's cliche of smashing guitars (I know it came from The Who, but in the 80's and 90's it seemed like if a guitar wasn't smashed it wasn't a performance), and another on the 90's conspicuous consumption called Wreck Of The Barbi Ferrari that's excellent.

You make this song sound great, I liked it a lot!!

This is a hard song to get going acoustically, mainly because of it's association with the way it's played in a (then) Heavy Metal band (would now be considered 'hard rock') - but you did a pretty good version considering it's well out of your comfort zone!! (and not too fast - about the right pace!)

This one was a bit rough (as per your 'early morning' comment, I'm guessing), but it sounds like it really suits your voice ... I'd like to hear it when your voice is warmed up, I think it would sound killer!!

(my son was stood next to me and said you sound pretty good ...)

I like your commect about the chords being played "sometimes intentionally", made me LOL. I like this version, I hope you try "Dreamboat Annie" by Heart in the next months challenge, I'd like to hear you do that, I think it would suit your style (but it may be another capo addition to get the right key for your voice)

Sorry Neo. I'm way, way behind on listening. I always enjoy your songs, but I have been very short on time. I will listen to all the ones you've taken the time to record and share with us. I appreciate that there's some guy 1/2 a world away willing to do that more than you know.

That's cool, as I'm still way behind as well, hopefully my employment situation will stabilize and I'll get some time to get other stuff done ...

Just as an aside note, it might of been better to have all the "discussion on the elderly"  in the chat section, where it would be more fitting rather than here which is simply FSOTM

Zurf you are absolutly right what you said there. I have a lot of elderly friends many over the age of eighty who belong to a group called Grey Power who battle bureaucrats and politicians  advocating for the independence and respect older people deserve.  Grey Power is an advocacy organisation promoting the welfare and well-being of all those citizens in the 50 plus age group.  They monitor what the government is doing and how that will affect their  members – meeting with influential people including politicians, to make their views known.
Grey Power is dedicated to the welfare, interests and concerns of the many people who are over 50 years and is a neutral but assertive voice of influence in the political arena with no party political affiliation.
I spend alot of time with my ninety seven year old mother the thing I hear often from her friends is they feel their family have no time for them. I was a   member of the RSA for many years the Return Services Association.  I would visit many who ended up in  hospital. I was  struck  by how many families couldnt find the time  to suport  their own family members and that shocked me. When some of these people died their families were quick to get to the lawyers and fight over the will. I went to funeral  a couple  of weeks back  for a friend of mine who was single and whose only brother and neice and nephew turned up at the service. I was approached to help with arranging the funeral as none of his family werent interested.  With a couple of his other friends a service was arranged  that we thought would be appropriate . His family  approached me after the service.   They told me they  hadn't seen the deceased for twenty nine years and only came to see if  any of his friends knew if he had left them  anything in a will. It hit home to me again  not all families spend time or care for each other and it is not always anyones fault.  It is just how some family circumstances turn out. Also I have seen the otherside  organisation putting the elderly where they don't want to be or their families want them to be without any consideration for the person's own wishes.. In other words getting involved when there is not the need. I got very sick last year and I am still recovering. If it wasn't for my friends and family I would have ended up having some of my independence and liberty  taken away from me. You are perfectly  right to think the way you do about these things with your experience in this area. of life. I hope there are many more who are having a good discussion about these things.
