Jamey Johnson and Brad Paisley write thier own stuff and produce really big hits. I think there would be alot more of this kind but the way the music industry is about marketabilty stops it. You have to have a certain look or background to be accepted as marketable. I'm sure alot of the songs making it today come from the mind and heart of some old guy or girl that just doesn't have the looks. To be honest probably could do a better job at it than the ones getting all the credit.

Doc,

Have you heard Ray Lamontagne? Great singer/songwriter and he's relatively new. Check him out on youtube. My favorites from him are "Jolene", "Empty", and "Shelter". Great Lyrics and great voice.

This side of the pond, I would include

Billy Bragg
John Martin
Davy Graham
Bert Jansch

Stateside

Guy Clarke
Townes Van Zandt
Steve Earle

In fact, the last three appeared live on a charity CD called "Together" for a dental hospital. It has a real "Troubadour" feel to it.

AN UNDERESTIMATED PHENOMENON OR NOT?
We didn't have this topic before, and I am truly fascinated by these people.
WHO ARE THEY, WHERE DID IT START?

MY OPINION
- It started probably somewhere in the middle ages with a musician traveling from village to village and spreading the word, news and entertainement.
ISN'T THIS VERY SIMILAR TO PEOPLE LIKE WOODY GUTHRIE, PETE SEEGER? They performed and their songs were a way to express themselves how their opinion was.
- PROTEST SONGS, ANTI-WAR SONGS, I REALLY DON'T KNOW, I'M JUST GUESSING.
If I should make a list, it would be like this: USA
- Bob Dylan
- WOODY and ARLO GUTHRIE
- PETE SEEGER
- Are BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN, NEIL YOUNG fitting in this category?
- JOAN BAEZ,
- DONOVAN?
- CAT STEVENS? both from the UK
What is your opinion about these singer songwriters, and are they still exist?
Is there FRESH BLOOD or not? I would really love to learn if there are still a lot of them. We don't have a big culture concerning singer song writers here.
