your right in statement that playing a guitar unamplified will allow you to hear if the sustain holds out on a guitar which is a good way to find out if a guitar is good. However the last part of your post is not true because there are alot of dogs out there. If you take the time to check a guitar out for sustain you find that you play a few before you find that certain one. Even though they are the same model and the same manufacture.

Well, it depends on the way it sounds les pauls type guitar tend to hummers, but its how you playing ability that determines how good the sound is. Spend 2000 dollars on a guitar, but if you cant play well it self defeating. Look at all brands of guiar try each one out. I found playing it unlplugged away from the teenagers in the music shop I found out quickly if the guitar will mold to me. I have Telecaster, and have a inbanez coming right away. I like the twaging, girlie like pitch of telecaster over the warm hummers of les paul. Remember, its your playing that determines how good you sound, and good strings, brigde, and tuning it correctly will make any guitar sound good if well cared for

Acousticzack, how did you come about both a Gibson Les Paul & an Epiphone Les Paul? The difference besides the country of origin (Gibson U.S.A., Ephiphone more than likely Korea or Malaysia) and cost. (Gibson around $1800.00 american, the Epiphone $599.00 : average)the quality of materials and workmanship. (not to say that Epiphone's are bad but there not Gibson's). Its like steak and hamburger they both come from a steer. After all what is hamburger besides chopped up steak.

Now you will play that for about six months and wish you would have got a STRAT! Your back would be thanking you as well as being able to play a wider variety of music.

I just played and EPI over Christmas and liked it quite a bit though, I am sure I will get a Gibson or EPI down the road, just for variety. ENJOY!

Got the Epi Les Paul Plus Top for XMAS...and I love it. It'd definetly not a Gibson, but at least now I can afford to pay my rent this year. Just got it back today from being setup. D'Addario 11's, nice low action, chunky. Mmm Mmm Good

I've been playing prfessionally for better than 35 years. While I do not own any guitars that are the current crop of Korean-made Epiphones, I have had a chance to play several. In my humble opinion, the Epiphones, especially the more expensive ones in the Korean line, offer a lot of bang for the buck. The pickups are nowhere near the power and tone of their Gibson counterparts, but for finish, fit and playability, it would be hard to justify the 5X cost factor for the Gibsons if you are starting out and are not making a living playing guitar. For the beginner to the mid level semi pro/amateur, these guitars, especially with a pickup upgrade, offer a really good guitar for the money. I have not dealt with the Michael Kelly guitars another blogger suggested, so I can offer no opinion on them. Good luck in your search!

Check out the Michael Kelly before you buy the Epiphone. An Ephiphone LP standard usually rus around $549.00 (american). Play them both.

ya im new at guitar so im just starin with the Epiphone. and if i stick with it i wanna move up to a Gibson if i get good enough. thanks for your oppinion.

I haven't got one, but I did borrow an Epiphone Les Paul from a friend a few months back and I have to admit it did sound and play really nice! I'm sure that there are better electrics out there for the same sort of money, but would definitely recomend the Epiphone!

Take a look at the michael kelly patriot series before you buy an Epiphone. There cheaper (cost wise not in quality) ands you get more bang for your buck. Go to the website michealkelly.com or to the sam ash website for a look.
