John swears he only uses three chords...Says they sound good to him...

In looking at some Prine sheet music, it was apparent to me that what the "trained" transcriber was catching was the momentary changes from chord to chord, where maybe a finger is lifted or still in place.

I used to play that, and I seem to recall it was pretty much first-position chords.

One thing that has helped folks going through a "stump" (slump, perhaps?) is to try something totally different.

Completely different style of music, maybe even a different instrument.

We do have a tendency to "practice what we know"; like the first poster said, set yourself a goal of new material or technique to master.

I too had a good experience at Guitar Center; I just picked up half-a-dozen acoustics and went back to the sound room to play them.

Nobody bothered me till I picked the one I wanted.

Remember that sales persons are trying to sell stuff; they may want to steer you to something they don't need.

A good idea is to pick a few models you're interested in, then read reviews from sources like Acoustic Guitar and such to see what folks think of 'em.

Guitar Center's online site has user-reviews of instruments as well.

Wonderful tune, written by Mary Chapin Carpenter, and recorded by Tony Rice on Native American.

I have looked high and low...Used to have the thing on a cassette...  Can't recall all the lyrics, and I'd love to have tab or at least chords.

Generally, the note after the slashmark is an added bass-string note.

I just signed up myself.  There used to be a number of guitar-specific hand-strengthening devices available; my kid bought one that allowed each seperate finger to push on spring-loaded tabs:

Squishy foam-rubber balls are pretty good too.
