Ditto!  But that doesn't mean we quit trying to get better.

Here are a few of my personal "Heros" in that department though...... sorry Bill, no "spaghetti Western themes" in the mix, or surf either!

Bill, the line comes from Hamlet, 2nd act.

What a piece of work is a man! how noble in reason!
how infinite in faculty! in form and moving how
express and admirable! in action how like an angel!
in apprehension how like a god! the beauty of the
world! the paragon of animals! And yet, to me,
what is this quintessence of dust?

To me it just means that no matter how great we are or want to be, in the end all that will remain is the dust of our bones to mark our existence.  The goal then is to do something worth remembering with the time we have.

WARNING!!! Thread Hijack!

With so many folks from the Island involved in this thread, I was wondering if someone could help me understand something.

There are several different names used when referring to your country; UK, Great Britain and England. Could one(or more) of you folks clarify the different names for me? It's something that has nagged at me for some time and I never had a chance to ask a native. smile

Thanks.

Not a native, but this link might be helpful:  http://www.infoplease.com/uk/language/d … isles.html

I would generally use United Kingdom, although I'm sure that my Scottish, Irish, and Welsh ancestors would prefer me to be more specific.

Welcome to Chordie!

You might wander down to the Chat Corner section and introduce yourself to the Community.  We have a fair number of Uke players in the congregation (although most also play the larger brother instrument as well).

You might spread the word among your groups that everyone is welcome here at Chordie, and we'll do our best to make you all feel Welcome!

Russ I think you have too pay after a year if I read it right.

You MUST make the change in the first year, or you will have to buy it (offer good for a limited time), but it will be supported (without fees) "for the life of the device" that you install it on.  If your hardware dies, you will have to buy it for the replacement (unless the new machine has it pre-installed OEM).  I assume that if your device fails under warranty, it will still be good license-wise.

Applications (like Office 365) will likely be subscription based (as it is currently) and you will buy annual access to those features you wish to use.  What I don't know, is how well W10 will "play" with applications that are not "Windows certified"....... things like the free Libre-Office, or Open- Office suites.  The API has been available for developers to ensure compatibility, but I'm thinking that not all will pony up the $$ to get it, so some things that we have grown used to having MAY not work with the new version.  All that will become clearer after release, and you will have the option of reverting back to your previous OS if you wish.  I also do not know if it will let you "dual boot" (have two different versions on the same machine), but I expect that may be an option for those wanting to "test-drive" before commiting.  We run beta versions on a "virtual machine" so bugs are not catastrophic (common practice), and so far no big issues.

Hi Dino,  It seems that the new stuff out there is pre-loaded with the "latest build" and will be updated automatically when the final release is official.

There are still changes being suggested, and little things going on in the backrooms up in Redmond, so it will be a bit different than the pre-final, but pretty close.   Haven't heard any mumblings about a delay, so things are expected to be on schedule.

As an aside; New Egg is selling the retail W10 online now for those of us who are not eligible for the free upgrade..... specifically we who are not currently running Win7 or newer, or hobbyists (like myself) who build their own hardware.  Kind of like buying tickets to a concert...... money now, enjoy when the gates open, we'll save a seat for ya'.

March 4-5, 2016 in Las Vegas!

I think you were watching film of last year's matches, but the "Sevens" are big in Canada (if not worldwide), and there is an International League with a homepage, schedules, tickets etc..

I use a laptop Doug so the mic input is stereo if it is a desktop then the only other input is the line in  on my Dell desktop there is no mic in only a line in

Juat goes to show, my sound card is dolby 7.1 with a whold slew of plug-ins stacked on the backplate.  Some in, some out, some amplified, some line level and such.

You are correct though that most laptops will have a common jack for mic & line in, which would be dual channel....... and some of the newer ones have only one that shares mic in with monitor out requiring a "special" headset or an adapter.  Have not got my head around that setup yet.... like what do you do if you want to record something and monitor it at the same time, or feed in a backing track and record along with it.  Guess we will have to get an audio interface and route everything through that via usb.  One more chunk of hardware I guess.

Take Care;
Doug

It has been awhile since I wandered away from Windows to Linux.  With that change I also lost Audacity (although I do have it installed on my Desktop pc).  Audacity is certainly adequate for most things that we are likely to be doing and there are plenty of add-ons (vst) that work well with it.  Jerome is partial to Reaper, I have been playing around with Ardour, but not doing much in the music recording end for awhile, so am just rusty.

For the most part they are all similar (in the free catagory), so it's kinda up to you to pick one...... just a whole lot easier to hang with one rather than deal with the learning curve of something different.  They are constantly getting better and adding functionality, so .......

Of the bunch Audacity was the easiest to master when we were checking out software to recommend for Chordie Recorders, so it has likely the most users here in the community (not counting the garage band appl;e folks).

I'll take a stab at this one..... although it has been awhile since I've used Audacity, if memory serves, there was a thing about installing Asio4All as the default audio driver (in Windows systems) to get the program to properly recognize peripheral input devices.  You would have to hook up your device to the pc, then choose the device in Asio as the default input, and THEN select it as the input device in Audacity (near the center of the window by the mic icon) and select 2 channel to get a stereo recording track and monitor output.  You also had to unselect your device when you were done (as the default) in order for your native sound card to operate normally after your recording session was finished.

I think it has to do with the pc seeing the usb input as a direct replacement for the onboard mic (on laptops) or a stand alone mic input through the microphone input on your sound card...... hence "assuming" to only see a mono audio stream.

Check your settings and advise accordingly.

Here's another Epiphone endorsement. Their build quality is very good, and as long as person likes the way it plays and sounds, brand isn't an issue. I'm especially impressed with the ProBucker pickups in my EP Les Paul, which are built identically to Gibson 490's.

Me Too!!

Epiphone is owned by Gibson and both products come down the production line practically side-by-side..... same specs, same tools and often the same hands!  A few changes in components and grading of the materials, but essentially the same in most respects (except price).  At one time there was a rumour that Gibsons with minor "blems" were branded with the Epi label, and generally a good value for the $$$.  I doubt that holds true, but if you are a "Lefty" and don't want to pay the Gibson "mutant tax", your only option is Epiphone IMO.

Good fit & finish, good tone, good Warranty, Great Customer Service!  Nuff Said....

B E A D F# B,  Light guage sets start at .013" so not that different than regular strings.  Chord fingering is the same as usual, but the voicings are lower.  Open E voices B etc. and naturally you still have a capo to make the change if you  don't want that "darker" tone.

It's all good!

Bill it too should be "transient".... have encountered it myself on more than one visit.  Not on your end I'm sure, but this is Friday noght for us here in the States, and usually Chordie is down for a few hours of a typical Friday evening starting around 8PM Pacific time.  Usually up again around Midnight, but although it does not seem to be a Chordie thing, I strongly suspect that it is regular upkeep on one of the host servers causing the glitch.

Usually temporary, and it should become only a faint memory until next time, but nothing to be greatly concerned about.

You and Dondra get some rest & don't fret.

Phill, I cheated.... I have a "Beta-Geek" in da haus!  My eldest, Devon has been sidelining in that capacity since the Vista debacle.  Anyway, he says "it's gonna be Awesome!"...... but I should add that to me "Awesome" is a double edged sword to mean either it is going to be Grand, or a steaming pile of (fill in the blanks).

We have been conditioned to expect MS to release something that "kinda works as expected" only to spend the next few years patching all the stuff that didn't, until the next iteration comes out that is supposed to do all the stuff the prior version didn't & repeat ad-nauseum.  The philosophy seems different this time, and much effort has been spent in getting it right  via 8 & 8.1, and actually "listening" to those subjected to using it.

I have 8.1 on a notebook, and fiddle around with it.  To me it seems cumbersome and intrusive in the way it assumes that every time I open my browser I "want" to continue my previous session exactly where I was when I exited (like there are only a couple of places I want to visit in the web-verse) which may be true, but I certaainly don't like some chunk of hardware making that decision for me (so few of the big decisions are up to me anymore, I take umbrage to having the little ones taken away too!).

Be that as it may, I would generally say that if you Love 8.1, you will be pleased with 10..... if not, then you should try it, as an improvement seems likely. I will upgrade mine (if only to see if it fixes that darn Synaptic Touchpad driver!) and join in the discussions as they emerge after.  Here on this side of the Pond the date is still the 29th for "fast-track" folks (like the Testers) and 31st for the rest of us (within limits of the servers).

Just my $,02

Should go RTM by the end of the week, build 10176 has been compiled and awaiting testing and approval.  Then it goes to the Beta-testers to make sure it is stable, then should be released on schedule the end of the Month.

It may be due for resurrecting the idea again, but I think it kinda lost steam due to the available time required to complete a project of this magnitude, with a mojority of us having jobs etc. that make it difficult to devote large blocks of.
