I caught a little bit of Steve Martin on Austin City Limits last night. He's not just a funny comedian and actor, but a really good banjo player too. He won a Grammy for best bluegrass album in 2010. Imagine that!!!!!

I found this vid after a quick search. It's not from ACL but it's him solo.

Sorry, I'm an idiot. Music starts at 2:20.

I'll second JJJ's opinion of Yamaha's. I have 3 of them. Also, you can't go wrong with a Godin brand. Seagull, Art & Lutherie, Norman, Simon & Patrick. I have an A & L and love it. I'd buy a Seagull S6 in a second.

Go to your local guitar shop and touch every one of their guitars and see what gets you excited.

That's just not fair. If I never get to be that good then he should at least make it look like it's a little difficult for him. The guitar Gods chose not to bless me with skill like that.

I think read somewhere that he is part alien.

I don't have a musical ear. I can tell if my guitar is out of tune and get it close to being in tune, but that's about it. I can't tell what chords are being played when listening to a song.

Wow sounds very nerve racking. I'm sure she'll do fine.

Nashville is known as "Music City", so I'm thinking you'll have too much to enjoy.

now that my right hand technique has developed some I can use heavier pick and make a LOT more noise.

That's what I like to hear.

Isn't that what amps are for??????

Welcome Richie!!!!! Glad to hear that you are progressing. Lots of songs use the EM G C D chord progression or a version of it.

Last Kiss - original by Wayne Cochran cover by Pearl Jam

Stand By Me - Ben E. King

Brown Eyed Girl - Van Morrison

Under the Boardwalk - Drifters

There's a few for ya. Easy peazy, Japanesey

As you can see Sonny, picking the right pick is about the same as picking the right guitar. Everyone has a diff fav and lots of us use more than one. I say play everything you can get your hands on and find out what fits you. Maybe order some sample packs. I have some cheapo pearloids from Musicians friend, Wedgie sample pack, Clayton sample pack, a couple wood ones, a stainless steel one, acrylic, plastic, nylon, tortex, ultem, acetal, rubber.... that's what I have in my pick tin. So there are lots of varieties to choose from. Then there is thickness to think about also. I personally like the Clayton Spike in .72. They are cut a little sharper than a normal pick. Made of ultem.

I wouldn't get too hung up on the "right" one tho.

So I broke down and added to my collection. I've been looking at one of these for awhile now. Watching them on ebay and seeing them get above what I wanted to spend. Had my change and jumped on it. $73 including shipping. Came with a gig bag too. I figure if my son ever wants to learn it's just his size and if I get a younger student this should be a good size for them too.

Yamaha FG JR1. Spruce top, Meranti back and sides, Nato neck, 21 1/4 scale. Nothing fancy, some chips in the paint around the edges, and a small ding in the top. The frets have no wear and the fingerboard looks like it's never been played. It was dry too. It got a cleaning, oiling, soundport, and I also rounded the end of the frerboard to follow the shape of the soundhole. I hate how most are just square cut.

I've been to one of his concerts and he's done a few for the after school program that I work at. He also plays Downtown Disney alot. The 10th vid down, Micah House, was taped at our 2nd location.

Brother Yusef. Holy Crap.

I know right!?!?! I got to see him last year playing out in front of the House of Blues in Anaheim. I instantly liked him. Very humble, soft-spoken, cool guy. All he wants to do is play his music.

Of the top of my head:

Brother Yusef - solo blues man very cool

2 cellos - amazing what hey can do with a cello

Playing for change vids are always worth a look

Swing, Dixieland Jazz, Big Band 1940's

If you've never listened to Japanes Shamisen music it's pretty cool. Old school or rock, they're both awesome. Yoshida brothers are on the forefront of rock.

I agree wholeheartedly with Red. The pledge should be said by all Americans no matter what their beliefs are. As said before, if you don't agree with the "Under God" part then leave it out. But as an American you should show some respect to the flag and what it stands for.

I second what Russ said. The first thing that came to mind was slide.

Hope the therapy helps and gets you where you want to be.

Good for you DJ. Really, what does it take to sit down for 30 mins. and bang some stuff out? Keep up with it and those barre chords will be just another chord.

You know, if you lose enough picks in your guitar you can use it as a Maraca.

If you haven't already, we need the link to your vid. Inquiring minds want to know!!!!!

You should take your guitar back to the office. They can't tell you what to do on your lunch break. Get a lunch time band together and make fools of yourselves, I mean jam together.

Very sad. Whatever drugs she did when she fell from stardom really screwed her up. Her comeback seemed failed from the start. Once you go that far off it's hard to turn it around no matter how good you were. I say were because I think she had lost what she built her career on. From the performances I saw recently, she just was'n't the same. But a great talent none the less. Singer still strive to sing like Whitney.

Don't knock the Zebco 33 DJ!!!!!! There's a reason they still make them, they are awesome. One of those if it ain't broke don't fix it kinda things. Like the old Mitchell reels. Those were made for like 40 years I think.

I need to get my license and go catch some fish.

Here's how I play it:

Verses:
D           A      G      D
S DUDU  DDU  DDU  S DUDU  DDUDU

Chorus:
G                          D                          A          G            D
S DUDU  DDUDU     S DUDU  DDUDU     SDUDU   SDUDU    SDUDU

S = scratch,chop,mute, whatever you call it.

Not sure on the actual timing.

Let me know if that makes sense.
