The rubbing compound with a little water works like spit shining shoes same with the Swirl X I will wait to clear coat it as it is all assembled and I need it to jam with a new band they asked me to play some gigs 70s rock and souther blues so it might be some time till I get around to it as they say the proof is in the pudding so after I upload the last photo judge then smile

I agree with Doug on the wet sanding. If you have lots of orange peel or if it is heavy then you might have to wet sand it. Compound just wont do it. Is it rubbing compound or polishing compound you're using? Rubbing is more aggressive than polishing. If you're looking for a glass like finish you will probly need to clear coat it to be safe. Like on cars, as long as you get the color on fine then you can put lots of clear on and wet sand it to a mirror finish without worrying about going thru the color.

dino I started at 6:30 this morning I just finished assebling the hardware and fitting the neck I have at least 2 videos and about 10 photos including the final one it will take time to upload all of this from my camera and convert it process the photos I am dog tired I will try and get a final photo uploaded this evening,i still have to set the string hight and intonation but that can wait till tomorrow dont know about my name on the guitar I am concidering pin stripping and looking at various designs let me gave the name thing some thouht smile

looking good russell!!!,I for one would not sand in circular motions, and I think I would try the different sandpaper grits on a few areas where you would not see mistakes and give these areas a light coat of paint. That will preview what the final outcome will be. It's Almost Christmas, we have all been waiting for the day russ!! One last thougt russell did you ever consider writing your name or something on the guitar or embedding a picture or quote on it somewhere before you do a final shot on it,just a thought!

Doug I am useing a  polishing compound made by Turtle wax it works really well then I use a product called Meguires Swirl X this is used after the rubbing compound  easy to use and great results most auto supply shops handle it all the wet sanding was done on previous layers I stripped it with zip strip and used Acetone to clean up and leftover paint in the grain next I hit it wilth 4 coats of primer,6 coats of Krylon cherry red then 4 coats of Testors Candy Apple red I only used a OOOO grit steel wool pad between coats brushing in one direction dry then wet the last coat is still drying for 48 hrs. tomorrow I begin polishing with the polishing compound to get all the "orange skin" smooth then the Swirl X for the final touch thats it,assembly time all the tuners and string trees are mounted on the new neck so it just a matter of putting the pickups and wireing on the pickguard (painted and also drying) and attatching the neck, hardware and stings and let it rip I am making a video of the project video clips and photos smile

Thanks Zurf, and Roger and I dont shave except under my chin but I use a scissors to keep my beard close. thanks for the compliment smile The tuners arrived and I am letting the last coat set for another day so it will be compleatly dry but I can asseble the tuners and put the pickups back in and sodder the lead and ground wires I still have a bit of work on the new neck other then mounting the machine heads I have to drill 4 holes and smooth a few burrs on the fret wire I should have it back together by wednsday or possible tuesday. smile

Doug  and dino from all the info I have gleened waxing it is ok if you dont intend to clear coat and the rubbing compound is ok on the final coat not between coats and it should be silicon free if you intend to clear coat.I have one coat of candy apple I applied over the cherry red and it looks great I am letting it dry overnight and then wet sand it and shoot it again I get several ponits of view on the best grit to start with wetsanding some say 1000 or 800 and sand in a circular motion I have several sheets of 1000 and 1500 the 800 grit would make it easier but I'm afraid it would remove to much of the paint any thoughts

dino I am useing enamal I got lucky today and picked up the last three cans of candy apple from the hobby shop I got the first ones from, they ran out and there truck came in today so I snagged them I am sparying right over the cherry red and since its a darker color and transparent it should look nice I dont think I will apply the clear coat for sometime as you suggested but I am going to use a polishing compound (low grit) for the final sanding and just put some car wax to keep it nice till I decide to clear coat smile

dino48 wrote:

Hi russell could not get on here yesterday,Looking at your plans I do not think I would clearcoat it yet, and no wax for a few months, the paint needs time too cure and it will take awile depending on how many coats you put on. If you do it now you may get the effect you see on cars and trucks that have the peeling paint jobs. The areas that did not cure long enough will eventally push up through all coats to the surface. They have problems with this at the factories as they are on time lines ( automotive ). I may be wrong with the wood application,I think I would talk too the people at the auto shop on monday, are you using enamal or lacquor?

I use a 000 grit steel wool pad to take the rough surface off by brushing it lightly in one direction then I dip it in a small container of warter and repeat in one direction till it is smooth then wipe with a clean soft cloth and its ready for another coat.I dont think I will need any rubbing compound just multi layers of paint and wet sand each layer, good tip on switching cans joey I got up this morning at 5:45am and dust sprayed the first coat it is drying as I type this and when it drys to the touch I will hit it again till I get a even coat then let it dry and wet sand and repeat at least 5 to 6 times then the clear coats will be applied,I can give a sneek preview later today I want to finish this up(painting and clear coats) today and get started on assembling, soddering, and mounting the neck Amazon has emailed me that the tuners were shipped today. smile

Zurf I dont know and dont care I knew if I kept at it would find what I needed and I did! oddly enough it was at Walmart I took the test strip with me and compared it to the available colors and lo and behold Krylon has a cherry red gloss spray paint it is identical to the color from my test strip I even sprayed  a tiny area and let it dry I could not tell the difference and it only cost $3.47 for a 12 oz can so I got two and best of all they also make a clear glaze spray that dose the same as clear coat it was also $3.47 when I got home I sprayed the test strip with a thin layer and let it dry and took a peek its like a mirror I could see my reflection I am going to be busy tomorrow and since this is not a translucent paint I dont need a silver or gold base coat. This is really good information for anyone who is thinking of doing a paint job on there guitar you dont have to spend an arm and a leg to get a quality finish I cant wait to get at it I think I will have it finished before the Fender tuning heads arrive I will keep all posted on my progress happy happy man!   smile smile smile

CRAP!!! the paint arrived it is NOT candy apple red,I test sprayed it next to the color of Testors and it anit even close its more of a clown nose red or fire red not the deep color I painted my pickguard and back plate with this sucks I called the company and they told me to return it and they would credit my account but I have to pay shipping costs it appears I may have to order the 3oz Testors which is what I was useing but nobody has any in my area but I am not throwing in the towel just yet I will scower the yellow pages for hobby shops I may have to drive a few miles to pick it up so be it I shall prevail lol

I did have to put all of these on my wish list at Amazon for at least 6 weeks, the holes in the new neck are larger then the ones in my old one and I needed some machine heads so i got a deal on some chrome fender tuners and with shipping it came to $34 I can always sell these to the music store or another musician when I get the other gold ones and my bridge is chrome so I can live with that,I did think about new pickups but my humbuckers really sound sweet and there white which will look nice with my new candy apple pickguard. My guitar may have started out in China but when I finish it will be all American smile

Ima ready to paint color!! come on Fed ex get here with my stuff! I noticed on the new neck the frets were a bit to sharp on the edges I filed them down smooth so they wont be cutting my hand when I move up and down the fretboard I think 3 10 oz cans should be more then enough to get 5 to 6 coats then comes the clear coat apoxy but I am getting help on that I hope otherwise I am prepared to do that also smile

I have this condition also not only that my fingers cramp up and contort what helps is some arthritic pain and musle relaxer I use Icy Hot it smells like menthol but it works I think the best thing is to speak with a pharmacy there are over the counter medications and creams that could offer relief but with me its most likey old farts desease lol
