Buy a cheap metronome they help a lot with tightening up your timing. Most songs are on cd and if you use an electronic tuner you will be in tune with a cd once you know what chords they're playing and then play along with the song.

You know I have to say, When people Have told me the same thing,,, it really grates me. Because you (dont take it personally, its a you as in whoever) assume that we can hit it without any instruction. I have tried to use it and a drum loop, yea I can play note for note on a scale and a dum dee dumm chord, and when I think Im on beat, I will have someone tell me im not in time. So to really have it be of benifit, someone, I think, needs to help you get started and understand what your supposed to really be doing.
This is mainly for stuff I try to write and play to drum loops, other wise I follow the song with the CD. (and make sure if the CD is in standard , half down or drop D / C to play too or that also can mess you up)
I asked my sons teacher to train him with a click track and he shrugged it off and said if really needed he might. I let it go, not to be a slave to the click, but it would help soooo much if I were taught how to maintain it, and I wanted my kid to not have the same problems as me. Maybe Im alone in this, but I dont think so,
ok off my soap box. Sorry to digress the thread.

I did play some songs on the porch for a new neighbor, which inspired me to pratice some Sun night. Spent a lot of time with my Son also which is always good. If there is a set sat or sun night I may be able to plan for it better when Im not at work.
Sorry I missed it.

Try Willy or Cash,, but maybe step into a type that is not your norm or comfort zone? How bout the simple stuff like Luie Louie and wild thing? You can play to it, its easy and the beats change. Who do you love is most definatly a Bo Didly beat and fun to do. Melloncamp has a lot of good stuff that is very different song to song. ROCK in the USA has a good swoing to it and can be used also with What I like about you (slight variation of strum, same chords)and Cheri Cheri. Stepping stone by The Monkeeys is a really fun song to play and it has a up beat time sig. (E, G, A, C)
Ok hope that helps.

Nela,
The key word is "If"
In my case as I have mentionedm there are just some things no matter how hard I try, my brain just wont absorb. As I mentioned Theory and the whole I V IV thing.
I had my sons guitar instructor try to teach it to me so I could hep my son with His asignment, It just sounded like Charlie Browns teacher to me. and I really was trying to learn it, it just didn and still does not compute. So, gimmi the chords baby! Ill strum them all night long while someone else does the lead work. I can play some basic scales and make stuff sound cool on my own, but not over top of a progression. been trying for 20 yrs.
Maybe if I had a daily tutor I would finally get it all.

Hey M.B. read Keith Richards' book "Life". I was pleasantly surprised at the writing.
dj
Just got it from teh library myself, also got ACE - NO REGRETS,
I was a little off about him not even playing for the band, they got pissed at him cause he was warming up while they were talking to the guy b4 him (Bob Kulick who would end up being a presence in the studio later on)
So they told him "here is an original throw, you best at it for lead" took them 3 weeks to decide on him.
After that one, im starting LIFE.

Thanks, Beamer. I really got a lot of great information from your answer! I see guitar players using these barre chords all the time, and I never understood why. I have been practicing "Creep" by Radiohead and it's defintely easier to play using power chords.
Once again your so welcome! Iit makes me feel good to know that while I have a huge black hole of theory knowledge,, the knowledge that I do know, is solid and has been of help to you.
Do you play an electric or just the acoustic? Power chords truely "come alive" on an electric.

Take every song you know in open position and learn it with all barre chords.
OK, but why? What's the benefit or advantage to playing things as barre chords?
If you know 3 you can use them all over the neck not just the first 3 frets example :
your standard E Bar chord shape for F = 133211, by moving it fret for fret down the neck you are playing that chord, F F# G G# A and so on, or for an easy way just play the first and 3rd fingers on E and A string. this will work up and down the neck and are called Root 5th Bar chords, they work best on strings 4,5,and6
I found this FREE PDF down load of Barre chords http://www.guitar-skill-builder.com/Bar … Chart.html
Ok and to answer your question of why? Well once you migrate out of folk,, and even w/ in it, and with your Beatles, conservation of movement and, quite frankly,, the other name for them is POWER CHORDS. You can get much more thump out of them, palm muting is easier, and shifting between chords is quicker. EX going from C D E isn’t that hard open but lacks a certain growl. If you play them as a 2 or 3 finger power chord, you’re just sliding the fingers right up the neck in a smooth progression and able to swap back and forth quickly. Best example I can think of that is not a metal song (as it was written LOLLOL
) would be most of the very popular stuff by THE KINKS. All day and all night and You really got me ( which have been covered by Van Halen and heavier groups) here listen and watch how they are played by everyones favorite Justin guitar. JimThanks. The design is more a lack of design. I can design, but I'm not a designer. Like I play the guitar without being a real guitar player.
jgreen wrote:What I read in Nela's post was -- don't stop there! C and G were pretty nasty not all that long ago too.
There's lots to learn, lots to accomplish. You can do it (if you want to).Glad I never had a problem with the C and the G. I had more trouble striking just 4 strings of the D. The knowledge that one day I'll be able to play the F as easy as an A gives me the strength to proceed. One day I'll be victorious.
Just play a root 5th F, index on 6th string 3rd finger on A string 3rd fret. If you want more tone, add pinky to D string 3rd fret and 2nd finger to Gstring second fret (wala now you have a Fmajor) but a lot of rock guys dont use the G string. You can use the 3 finger pattern all over the guitar and move it down to the A string also. you can also keep your index barred across all and then drop your other three fingers down a string each (basically make an Am with them) and you have another chord. youll have to use the chord finder from J guitar (http://jguitar.com/chordname)
to get the correct names. I use 'em but not know them ![]()

I cant find the verson I have in my book at home but just turn on distortion and on the major stuff use root 5ths with the pinky added. you could do teh minors also but I think on this they sound better open.

Does anyone have any stories about how young musicians met up and formed legendary bands? I love the conversations we have on this forum and I always learn a lot from you guys. Thanks!
M.B. I highly suggest that you check a vidio shop or netflicks and watch HAIL HAIL ROCK AND ROLL. Kieth assembles a band to record with Chuck Berry because in his opinion Chuck has never been recorded deacently. Keith is the arrangement genious for the stones. If you can find teh complete set of dvds for this show, the "extras" disk is great. at one point Keith says to take a brake from one song they were praticing,, and Chuck is like "NO NO NO lets JAM,,, LOOK AT WHO WE GOT IN THIS ROOM, LETS JUST JAM!" And what follows is a inprov jam that while may not be the greatest thing in 6 strings,, you can see Clapton Berry and Richards just having fun. Like we are supposed to have with music! ![]()
Also if you like band tales: I AM OZZY was great! caution, Oz pulls no punches and tells you exactly what was going on with the band sex and drugs,,, but trust me, in 3 pages you will be laughing out loud. Sammy Hagars book is good also. but he is the same way. tells it like it happened.
I just found HAIL HAIL ROCK AND ROLL for you on you tube starting with part one.

Another story I heard one time (although it may not be true) is that when Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons were forming KISS, Ace Frehley walked into the audition wearing shoes which did not match. They supposedly hired him without hearing him play a single note.
The truth is yes he actually did show up in the two different color shoes,, however he did and did not "play". He was just warming up and screwing around with his amp and they said - Your hired. -- I am a huge Ace fan. Ill freely ( no pun intended) admit some of his stuff is rubbish,(mostly the crap Todd Howarth wrote!) but I have always loved the attitude that you hear as he plays.

Re: New Chord Search engine: searchbychords.com (36 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
My question is how does this help them if the only chords they know how to play does not fit their voice range or the voice of the person with them who is doing the singing? I agree it is great to be able to call up a song that is in the key of (place key here) and to be able to play it. Gives you a feeling of accomplishment. I think that if one learns SEVERAL simple basic progressions (leave out the key of B or F and any of the flat keys) a whole different world then opens up for you. Then learn how to transpose a song to a different key or the proper use of a capo and you can open up the universe. This tool (search by chords) is a well thought out item but don't limit your learning of playing by depending on this as the answer to you becoming a GUItar GOD.
Nela
Not everyone can sing. Not everyone is able to transpose, ( I let the program in the song list do it for me) and many dont get the I III IV thig at all. 12 yrs and I just cant get my head wrapped around it and most music theory. That is why we like chords ![]()
With someone singing I wouldnt even know which way to transpose a song up or down and to what key? ( The key unlocks my case right?
)

A lot of people just want to play, or play along with a backing trackor be able to bash out some some tunes whiles drinking some beers.
How do you all think I found this place? Its only been the last year or so that I have been fourm active,, but I have pinched a buttload of songs to jam too, mostly by myself or one other person.

I once was in a class for "Radiation safety Officer" Its all about half life , shielding , ect... most of us were military or civile defence. We had a young guy about mid 20s who was a nuke engineier who was asian. Very cool guy btw, we had an asignment and the instructor told us when we finished we were done for the day. 5 min later he stood up and said C-Ya! We gave him he!! for blowing the Bell curve and the jokes about him being an overachiver. He said in all seriousness, " Actually im the lazy one in my family, I like to party." Seems his 4 older brothers and sisters were super smart neuro surgeons and stuff like that. He also told us how many hours a day he was forced to have to do studies.
A great guy, wish Idd kept in touch with him.

i've never seen mr rogers before, must be a US thing?
The re-runs of Mr Rogers Neighborhood have been on PBS (United States Public Broadcasting) since I was a little kid (im 44 now). Back when you only had 3 networks and PBS that show was a stapel for kids.
Mr. Rogers, The Electric Company, Zoom, Sesame Street were after school and day time educational kids shows. Much better than a soap box show when you were home sick!
