I used to always play with a pick, but a couple of years ago I sarted playing without one for some reason and I seem to do better.  The sound isn't quite the same, but with time I think my picking fingers have hardened somewhat and the sound is louder.  Everytime I try a pick now, it feels uncomfortable.  At least this is true when I play chords.

I've come across some of his tab somewhere, but can't remember where.  I just search on dave loggins tabs chords and it usually gets me there eventually

Some of my all time favorite singers don't really have a good voice, but man are they good.  Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson Rod Stewart, to name a couple, but the one thing they can do is carry a tune.  It may be gravelly, but it sounds good.  I was blessed with a great voice, now if I could just get my guitar to follow me, I would have it made.  Like they said, practice man, practice.  And good luck.

At 57, I could probably do 200 lb sacks.  LOL

I'll soon be 67. Started on tuba in high school. Played rhythm guitar, trumpet and trombone in bar bands for 24 years. Worked at the post office long enough to get a pension while playing a single guitar/vocal gig on weekends.
Now I play tuba in a beach music band. We sound like this: http://www.myspace.com/johnrenomusic

It's hard to sing with the tuba.  I see why you changed over to guitar.

Kind of like dancing.  Some have it, some don't, but with practice, who knows.  Just hang in there and really practice alot.

I'm 57 and just really getting into since I retired two years ago.  I spend more time now than when I was working and I am getting better every day.  Mostly chords and singing.  Practice works, I tell you.

I've always used a pitch pipe.  I prefer it.  Generally I can get the pitch pipe out and tune each string quickly and I'm good to go.  I also have good pitch.  But, there are some days where I just have trouble getting each string right.  I don't know why that is.

I have never taken the time to try to memorize songs, either.  I just have trouble remembering words and chords.  I have all my songs on computer and on a PDA and I also have a notebook of printed songs.  This gets me through just fine.  You will notice, a lot of pianists use sheet music to play, why not us?  It is kind of a pain sometimes when you are out in the backyard and it is windy and you have to have someone hold the music, but hey...who cares.

Just a question about smoking.I'm not trying to offend anybody.Rod Stewart,Johnny Cash,Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan are great singers. With the exception of Simon Cowle I am a big fan of them all and always will be.

Understand.  I. too am a smoker and it doesn't appear to bother my singing too much.  I just mentioned those names because they all have gravelly voices, much like smoking can cause, I think..  I love all of them, even with the raspy voice.  Watching American Idol, I always just wonder what kind of marks those singers would get on the show.  The new singing seems to have about 5-10 sylables for every word.

You won't settle for a voice like Rod Stewart, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson or Bob Dylan?  By the way, I always wonder how these guys would do against Simon Cowle.

Hey, Zurf, that's exactly how I do it.  I know strumming patterns are good to learn, but I have trouble with a lot of them, so I just strum and hope for the best.  It usually sounds good to me.

I'm not the greatest strummer.  I just try to strum to match my singing.  It seems to work.
