Hi krhoades,

I've got a Mexican Strat and I'd say it was well worth the money. If I was you I'd go along too your local guitar store and try out as many as you can in your price range and then make your choice.

Craig.

Yep i got one as well.

I always seem to revert too DDUUDU.

Thanks James,  smile

Now if that's a simple explanation I'm not sure I'd like to know the technical one! lol

So from what you're saying I take it that as long as the chord has the 'basic flavour' of a C triad along with the flattened 7th, then it will be a C7. But if the 7th is not flattened and the Major triad is present then it's always a Major7?

Thanks for the link, I'll go have a look see at it.....even though I know it's gonna pickle my brain! lol

I've been trying to get a grasp of some theory regarding chord structures and I'm stumped with this one at the moment.

What's the difference between a Cmaj7 and a C7 chord?

I know how to work out the differences between add9 and maj9 etc, but I'm totally stumped on this one. The Maj7 is, i, iii, iv, vii (played C,E,G,B,E)and the C7 i'm working with appears to be, i, iii, no 5th and a flattened 7th (played C,E,Bb,C,E). Does it have something to do with the difference between the Major and Dominant scales?

Can anyone help me out and explain whats going on here please?
I daresay it's blindingly obvious once you know what's going on. But, for the moment it's got me stumped and is preventing me from moving on at the mo. I dont have a great grasp on things yet, so if the explanation is kept as simple as possible I'd appreciate it greatly. smile

Thanks,

Craig.

Yep, have to agree with most of what has been posted. I've seen good friends fall by the wayside from drug addiction.
Being from (what was known as ) The Chemical Generation, the Rave scene, myself and my friends were all into pills, dope, powder and potions of one type or the other. Sadly two lost the battle for good and are no longer here, a couple have gave up on the battle and are hoplesley addicted, one went through rehab and is now doing so well for himself it would make you weep too think about where he once was. Thankfully the majority of us treated it as a stage in life we were passing through and came through relatively unscathed. Although one or two still have what I would term a 'social addiction' too drugs, i.e they could easily go without but choose not to.

Good idea to let the thread run though, if one person reading through the posts takes on board that the HIGH is not worth all the LOWS then it will have served a purpose.
In saying that, I'm a great believer in 'it's my body, I'll do what I want with it'. But, speaking from the experience of years of drug and alcohol missuse, I can say with great conviction, you can do so much more with your body and mind when you're straight. smile

I've just been listening to a song 'Mesrine' by an old Oi band from the early 80's, The Blood. The lyrics are all about the Frenchman Jacques Renne Mesrine (a bit of an anti hero).
What I was wondering is this;

Do you need permission from someone if you are writing a song specificaly about them?
If not, as I suspect is the case, would you be leaving yourself open to court action if your 'muse' took offence to what you had written and recorded about them?
Or could you get away with claiming 'artistic license'?

After all, if someone took offence to an article in the media they would be able to sue for libel (if they so wished). So I daresay it is possible that this could happen over a song and it's lyrical content.

I reckon it would prove to be an interesting case if it ever arose.

Does anyone know of any actual cases of this happening?

P.S Anyone thats into Punk could do worse than checking out the aforementioned bands album 'False Getstures For A Devious Public'
Cracking lyrics and fast, powerfull but melodic music.

It's nice to see The Who and Jethro Tull getting a mention, they're always overlooked in this debate in my opinion. Although, I would put them in the Blues/Hard Rock category myself. Sabbath is  definetely up there as well as they developed there sound from the pounding of the steel mills, hence the metal conotations there. But again, I'd place them in the Blues/Hard Rock area. AC/DC are worth a mention but again probably a Blues/Hard Rock band.

Heavy Metal? Hard to really define the begining I reckon and I'm certainly no expert, but what about Judas Priest?

Well, the dictionarys definition of my user name (though I spelled it wrong!) is;
Being in or conforming to the prevailing or current fashion; stylish.

But I chose it cos I was a bit of a Mod when I was younger, but lean more towards being a Rocker now (in terms of both music and fashions), although I still have the old Mod leanings. Therefore, I'm not exactly a Mod, just Modish. lol  Thats the correct spelling by the way! smile

"'Mod' is a shorter word for 'young, beautiful and stupid' - we've all been there." - Pete Townshend.  lol

I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure John Lennon 'gave' Without You to Harry Neilson.
Don't quote me on it though. smile

Just a little footnote,

Page got the idea for forming Zep while jamming with Keith Moon and some others, he wanted Moon and Entwistle too leave The Who and team up with him and someone else I just can't recall.
Although both Moon and Entwistle were unhappy in The Who at the time, they both still wanted to give their all.

I've always wondered how that group would have turned out.

Craig.

Probably not a well known band, but I quite recently attended a Dirty Pretty Things gig in Glasgow....well...it were a few months ago. One of the support bands was Mando Diao, who I had never heard before. Went straight home and got their album of iTunes and absolutely love 'em.
Same goes for a band I heard last year at a Stiff Little Fingers gig, Blood or Whiskey. Irish music with a Punk element, terrific.

I have my parents and older sisters too thank for my catholic tastes in music, there were so many differing styles of music being played in my house when I was growing up. I was listening to The Who - Tommy when I was about 9 or 10 when all my mates were still listening too the crap in the charts at the time.

My parents got me tuned into 60's, a smattering of Country and Western, some Classical...all sorts. And my sisters got me listening too bands like U2, Big Country, The Smiths, New Order, House music, AC/DC all at an early age.

Diversity in musical tastes is a wonderfull thing I reckon. smile

Craig.

I'm not sure what part you are having problems understanding.  So if I'm stating the obvious, my apollogies.

The h means you hammer on. i.e, play the 2 and hammer your finger onto the 4th fret. Probably using your 1st and and 3rd finger.
The s means you slide from one note to the next. i.e, from the 2 to the 7. Play the note on the 2nd fret and slide your finger upto the 7th fret.

Hope that helps. smile

I've been trying to learn some scales lately to help improve my knowledge of my guitar playing a bit.

Now, when I sit and play them with my notes in front of me it isn't a problem, I can stumble through the Major, Natural Minor, Dorian and Phyrgian pretty well.......as long as I have my notes.

My problem is retaining them in my head and playing from memory. It doesn't matter how often I practise them, the next day I've always got to go back and check what I should be playing. sad

Does anyone have any tips that would help me memorise them?  I'm resasonably inteligent, can retain information no probs and have no bother recalling lyrics etc, I just seem to be stumbling on my scales. I run through them every night when i start practising, but just can't seem too be able to retain them.

Should I stick too one scale at a time, learn that stone cold and then move on to the next one perhaps?

Get together a list of bands that you like and pick a name from one of their obscure B sides. It worked for Motorhead, I'm sure Lemmy took the name for the band from a track by his old group Hawkwind.

Might be worth a shot. smile

Agree with Bootlegger, get a decent leather strap. A good tip for a strap lock is too use the little rubber seal from a bottle of Grolsch beer, they work a treat and you get too drink a beer. Perfect. smile

I try my best to play from the heart, but my fingers aint capable of translating what my heart says too them yet. sad  I can make the most god awfull racket playing along to a jam trax CD.......but to me, it's the most beautifull sound ever, even if I can still only play 'in the box' as it were........But I will get there.
Of that I'm certain. smile

Craig.

My main squeeze is my Mex Strat, PJ. But I still aint got round ta buying me Acoustic yet. I did however rescue one from the landfill site and named her erm....PJ also. lol

Never heard of the make, but it does me too strum away on in the short term. It's a Gregg Bennet one. Anyone any ideas about it???

Craig.

Who was the guitarist that got electrocuted on stage???  It's puzzlimg me at the mo.
I keep thinking of the geezer from Free, but know it wasn't him.  sad

Craig.

When I started I HATED open C with a passion. I just could not nail it.  The hardest one I encounter now is the next one I learn that I haven't come across before.

C is a dawdle now though. smile

Went too see my tutors band on Friday night (The Missing Swimmers) and have too say I was very impressed, pleasantly surprised at just how good they were.

It's a bit of a plug for them I know, but if anyone in the Glasgow/North Ayrshire area notices that they're playing their local I would recomend you check them out. Hard to pigeon hole their sound but it's kinda Indie experimental. Seriously worth checking out.

Craig.

Nice one.  Good choice I reckon. Always willing to help others out with a bit of advice.

Yep, a couple of my favourites have been mentioned. Sheryl Crow, whose music I love listening too and PJ Harvey, whom I named my guitar after. smile
Another one that I've found myself starting to enjoy is KT Tunstall, wasn't that keen on her at first but the more I listen too her the more I like her.
I love it when that happens, y'know just gradually finding new bits n pieces here and there that turn you on to a certain song or style. smile

Jonni Mitchell, whom although I aint that keen on her music ( big yella taxi being the exemption) is also a helluva good guitarist.

Craig.

Nearly forgot!  What about Chordies very own, Brooke?  Some cracking cover versions on her website, well worth checking out. smile
