I've noticed that many players, particularly the youngsters, are having trouble with downstrokes. I don't understand the difficulty. Music has downbeat and upbeat and ussually corispond with down and upstrokes. When you strum down you have to bring the pick back up to strum down again so why not just run it right across the strings when you do. I know I'm oversimplifying a bit but the best answer is ussualy the simplest (Occman's Razor).
At any rate,If you are having trouble with it, don't be worried. Just get in there, laugh at the mistakes and once you loosen up and stop believing it's this mystical art you will do fine.

It depends on the song. If I write one that is going to be electric I write it on an electric if accoustic then I write on an accoustic. If mixed i write each on the appropriate instrument. as far as playing goes, I play whatever is handy if i'm away from mine. otherwise I just play on whichever one is appropriate for what I'm doing with the song.

It was a very fun time. Almost all of that lead work was done on the E string. I'm working on a follow up call "We Haven't Learnned Yet" to kind of bring it up to times. Good times. smile

Always possible and usualy exciting. You aren't nessesarily changing styles you are expanding your own. It will still sound like you. It will just sound like you doing more than you did. Go for it!!!

Learnnig the fretboard came pretty natural to me. Otherwise it's kind of like placing a call with no numbers on the keypad. I think most of what people say is advanced is really no more difficult than learning a few chords. I feel music is like learnning a language. Actually it's easier. The alphabet has 26 letters. Music has less than half. Grammer has more rules than music theory. Basicly if you can pass high school english then you can excell at music, but you have to know your instrument and what more important part of the instrument than the part you touch the most?

It really depends on what style of music you want to play. Different styles exploit different techniques. When I first started out I wanted to play rock and blues so I first learnned to play power chords, From there barre chords were easy because I was already making half the chord. Then I learnned the open chords and started learnning some scales. Before long I had all of those down pretty good and started learning some real voodoo. So what style do you want to play?

My appologies, I should have asked. What type of picking are you interested in?

Dude!!!!!!!!!
DON'T EVER feel like you have a stupid question. Nobody knew anything until they found out. I run these guys nuts with questions. It is a privilage to impart knowlege to other musicians.

I think you may be on to something. I think we have a sharper, more creative new breed of musicians comming up. The class of 95 (my class) were awsome and had so much to say and a desire to create a new world. We didn't quite make it but we took a few steps in the right direction. The class of 2000 weren't thinkers and creators. They were consummers for the most part. Now I do know some brilliant young artists in there twenties but they are a rare beast. Your generation seems to have more to say than "Check out my new ring tone!" The guitar is a very personal instrument. Do you honistly know anyone who names their mixing console or digital loop program? Your generation has the passion needed to create meaningful music. I just learnned to play to get chicks!

When a song comes to me sometimes lyrics, sometimes music, sometimes both, I usualy know if it's a guitar song or a piano/keyboard song. So I sit down to the instrument and write the song. I usualy record the rythem guitar or piano as well as the vocals. if I have a mate with me like Jason I'll also record the drums with it or if my wife is there I might have her play a bass line otherwise I use the drum setting on my keyboard and maybe go back and play the drums over it. Then come the overdubbs. Lead guitar, possibly strings or organ or something. The main thing for me is to make sure the song can stand on it's own with only one instrument and vocals.

When I started learnning to finger pick (I'm still learning), I bought one of those fake books with the melody line written out and practiced them as well as just arpegiating my chordes to get used to useing my fingures that way. It made it easier to start learning to play more coplex pieces of folk, classical and jazz. Takes a lot of practice to. It's a totally different way of playing but well worth it. Some great electric players even use their fingers like Robbie Krieger from the Doors and Buddy Guy. Good  luck!!!!

The hard part for me is making sure that I don't end up in a formula. I try to have a fresh idea and approach musicly and lyricly each time. Looking back at my songs over the years I think this is the first to start on a chorous rather than a verse.

Vicious! I LOVE it!!! My friend you are the CHORDIE KING of social comment. Reminds me of Country Joe and the Fish. You and Roger should make an album of protest and social comment songs together. Once again BRAVO!!!!!!

Thanx for the congrats from Leah and myself. Also thanx for the support and encourgement the last few days. It really helpped me to get off of my bum and start working on my music again. This one has a sort of soft 50's feel for the A C# F# E bit and a stronger kind of march for the verses. I might record it this weekend. Not really my best work but it got me working again. Thanx again guys!!!!

I think it's great. When I started playing it was next to imppossible to get discovered. Record lables manufactured their acts. Now not only is it cheaper to get a decent recording, but there is a place to have your work available to the intire civilized world..

Only you know if you are ready. If you and your mates like to play together then you're ready. When you guys feel ready to perform then have a bash at it. You will know when the time is right.

Hey guys! Last few days have been a terrible dry spell for me. I pick up my axe or sit at the piano and nothing comes. Absolutly nothing, not even something embarassingly bad. I know everyone hits dry spells but it really sucks when it's me. Anyway, I hope to have some new material soon. I know it will come but I just felt like complaining a bit.
