The short answer is... it depends...
I have been playing for less than a year. I am attending an introductory class and I find it useful, mainly because it corrected some technical details that would have been hard to iron out later. But much of the stuff I play is stuff I looked up online and taught myself.
Try the Yamaha pacifica series for good cheap electric guitars. Personally I agree with Alvee. For acoustic beginners, getting a decent guitar that can hold tune is more than enuf to start with.
