So I've been toying with the idea of getting an ovation acoustic guitar, mainly to use when I play at church to avoid the hassle of trying to amplify/add a mic to my current guitar. Plus they seem pretty cool, but I don't know much about them. Hows the tone? And whats a good price?

Re: Would You Buy a Folding Guitar? (35 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Might be cool to have as a novelty piece. I don't understand how tuning would work, would you have to start over every time you unfold it? And as for warping and whatnot, that could probably be disastrous. What's the big deal about them? Just carrying convenience? I can't imagine the tone being better with a neck that folds in two.

Re: acoustic guitar plus keyboard friendly songs (8 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
I've spent a large portion of my existence strumming along behind my papa's piano... As long as its in the same key you can play anythig together. Check the music store for books that have sheet music with guitar chords above it. Piano and guitar work well together, and it'll be even better if you put a personal spin on your favorites. Music is universal, even the artist originally used an electric guitar and a bass or whatever doesnt mean you cant play the same notes with a keyboard and piano (and your uniqueness will make it awesome).

Re: Takamine guitars (32 replies, posted in Acoustic)
I have a g series takamine guitar. I payed around 300 for it, but then that was a going out od business sale. Compared to the other guitars, even epis and fenders, in that price range the takamine was head and shoulders above. I've had around 4 years now, and often get compliments on its tone from other players. I've never had the privilege of owning a Taylor or Martin, but for my puny funds I haven't found a better sound than my little takamine dreadnought. It also feels like its made with real wood and isnt so flimsy as other lower/middle end guitars. You have to go with your gut when you buy a guitar and find the right fit for you, but its definately worth a shot to try a takamine in the price range youre looking at.

Re: greatest classic rock guitar songs (17 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Wow thats a toughie! Does this go by song quality, talent of the musicians or cultural influence? Longest time on the charts? Anyways I'm no good at putting this stuff in order but my list wpuld include: SOMETHING featuring the skydog, maybe the ABBs statesboro blues (an all time fav), Free Bird, Hendrix's Little Wing instrumental version, something by Zeppelin (probly not stairway, didnt page say it wasnt the beat example of their sound or something?) maybe Rock n Roll, House of the Holy maybe even I Can't Quit You even though its a cover, a CCR song like Green River or Born on the Bayou, and because I'm from Texas I'd have to decide between LaGrange and something by SRV. Nice topic!

Technical prowess aside, my earliest serious inspiration came from Willie Nelson's mellow acoustic fingerpicking style. I tend to value creativity above technical precision.

Re: bottle neck slide guitar (6 replies, posted in Acoustic)
I got a set of three for christmas, not that I ever learned to play them very well. They were brass, stainless steel, and
glass. I don't know anything abouy metal ( or
much about slides) but I think those are your standard types. The old blues players reportedly used empty glass
perscription bottles, and I've heard of playing with a case
knife. Just getting
one from the music store cant be TOO expensive right? And they look cool sitting around the rest of my knick knacks anyway!

I'm only 20, but sometimes my shoulder hurts like crazy after I play a long time, I seem to notice it most at night. Sometimes my wrists pop and crack, which is lovely (not). thats a more recent thing but I'm pretty rough om them between guitar and art. Maybe let it rest a day or two?

Re: was your first time ok? (24 replies, posted in Acoustic)
I play in
church- which is where I started. I mainly play for myself too, but I feel like its something I can give. Anyhoo, the first time they talked me into playing I could barely even strum anything. I jad a sheet with higlighted chords over the words, and I would just hit the one chord on the one beat everytime we got to it lol.... It was a good experience really, even though I was embarassed. People were nice and tried to encourage me, and I got better. I've never been able tp decide if its harder to play for atrangers are people you know.
