Let's start a little mischief about this Made in America thing.

"Why would a guitar MIA be better than one made anywhere else?"

Discuss?

methinks, ken, that you may have a slight bias in your opinion on bagpipes!

hey topdown, that link is top! perhaps put it in the resources section of the site?

I have two tips:

Mess around with open g tuning for a while and do some stones and punk - its easy to sound great!
Listen to Joe Bonamassa "Blues Deluxe" for inspiration

A wise woman once said - buy a cheap guitar and you are often delighted and rich - buy an expensive guitar and you often disappointed and poor.

yes - I am having fun with my 12 string too - cheap fun. I am impressed with the build on my 100Euro guitar - stays in tune, is loud and clear and even looks good. It's a Dimavery -Chinese I think. Claims to be solid top and came with a gig bag and a strap and a spare set of strings - bargain of the year for me.

when you consider that you can buy three perfectly good budget brand guitars with different characteristics (say a dreadnought, a 12 string and an electro/acoustic) for the price of one lower end Taylor/Gibson/Martin - it might give you pause for thought.

1. Bowie kneeling down on stage to play Mick Ronson's guitar with his mouth.

2. When I didn't give up my day job.

Lunamoon - Now I see you have back ache - I can tell you from experience you will only get worse until you get in to a better position - not only chose a holdable guitar, but sit on a decent high chair and maybe use a footstool to raise your knee - don't hunch over the guitar sitting on the sofa! It can't be good for your playing either.

Worry - because if you are sitting in an awkward position you will develop aches and pains because you will be concentrating on playing and forget to move around for an hour!. Seriously  consider looking at a guitar that is slimmer or smaller bodied - I have a plastic bowl back Crafter electroacoustic which is very comfortable and sounds good unplugged. Good luck!

I am just about to get a cheap but cheerful 12 string guitar - and I have read somewhere that just playing six string tunes is not the best thing to do. So any advice on how to proceed with my 12 string adventure would be appreciated - artists/classic 12 string song suggestions welcome!

Thanks

Thats because with this song you are not really  just chording - you need to play the melody on the D and G strings while maintaining a partial D chord  on the B and E- its best to look at someone like Fretkillr on youtube playing it to understand what's happening. This is an excellent song to get your fingers moving independently,

What's in a name... on acoustic I use D'addario phosphor bronze .012 - .053 - which they classify as light - any heavier shreds my fingers and I prefer the comfort and general purpose tone.

Its best to keep a note of the strings you like the sound of - because you'll be amazed how much difference they make - which makes comparing guitar tones even more confusing!

A big hit with me and others this side of the pond, maybe not yet known in rest of world?
Anyway thought I'd share this special performance in a balloon that other fans may have missed!
Notice how he swiftly changes his capo position mid song ... smooth!

You could get a free BLOGGER account from google, and create a blog for your guitars - you can post text and pictures and you don't need any special skills or tools to do that. Or you could use a Picasa Web Pictures account, again from google, and set up a photo album. Its all free and easy stuff and hard to spam.

windmills, tulips and cheese land

I saw it on offer in my local music store for 140Euro and asked for a demo. This little beast has 15 practice track loops  which you can change the tempo and key! Or you can just use the drum track. It even an E note tuner, plus the usual amp models and FXs you get build into it. It's a great little practice amp and sounds OK in the living room and small enough to shove in a cupboard when you don't need it out. Everything is done using knobs, so you don't need to learn how to programme it. Very practical kit for the money. Especially since I didn't know I needed it until I saw it!

Huge size?  Just to give you more to worry about - what shape and size of acoustic do you want. Jumbo, Dreadnought, Grand Auditorium, with or without a cut out, parlor, shallow body , "baby"etc. You need to go to a guitar shop and browse. Apparently 1000's of people don't find the sizes avaialble irritating tho'!

I would look at the Crafter range - they mostly have solid spruce tops and nice hardwoods in the body - the pickups are good to. I don't care if its a Martin - I ain't subscribing to buying a guitar made out of the same stuff as a flat pack wardrobe.
