Hi guys.  How are ya'll..?  smile

I've got stuck in a bit of a rut with my playing. Have only been playing 7-8 months, can play 100 or so songs from memory, can do loads of cool lil riffs on my 'lectric, but now..  i guess i'm bored.  I'm picking up my acoustic, and doing the same stuff each time. Playing the same tunes, scales, etc etc... i know what ya gonna say, "then learn something new!".. but what...?  I do practice those evil Barre chords, have fiddled some with power chords, done a bit of everything, really.  Am i trying to go to fast..? Should i pick ONE thing, & stick at it for a while..?

One of my favourite songs to play is American Pie, Don McClean.. try puttin a metranome to that one. LOL...

A metranome might well come in handy for me, a still relatively new player (7 months)... i too tend to go muuuuuuuuuuuuuch to fast, (especially playing 'Wonderwall..!').. But, since getting a multi effect pedal for my 'leccy guitar, i use the drum machine on that to help me keep time.  smile

Just do it.

For the record, I suck at singing too.  I suck less at singing than I did two years ago, because I sing every day.  Perhaps I have just anesthetized myself to the horrors of my voice.
There are books to teach you to sing.  I haven't used any.  They might be useful.
Mostly I just make sure the audience is drunk.
Or I am, 'cause then what the audience thinks really doesn't matter.
You can also do sing-alongs.  The audience will sing along if they're drunk.

To be clear, I am an adult and my friends are adults.  This sort of behavior is usually in someone's yard or at a campground and no one drives anywhere.  We might be drunks, but we don't endanger anyone else with it.

Except possibly their eardrums.  'Cause we suck at it.  However, what we lack in talent we make up for in volume.

Most of all - when in doubt, sing loud.

Radio is pretty much dead.  Corporate consolidation killed it.

There are two stations that I can listen to.

KEXP in Seattle, and there is another independent station in Austin Texas that is phenomenal as well.  Both stations still allow their DJs to write their own play lists, and they focus on local acts.

I though Video killed it..? Gotta luv the Buggles.. hehe... Sorry, couldn't resist...  my bad.. wink

Hi Ozy, Doug.  I'm self taught, from a book and some of the wonderful online lessons on YouTube!   I taught myself the chords from the diagrams in the book, and then was off for a search on easy 3-4chord songs!   I dont know an ounce of any theory, no scales, but all i want is to be able to play a few songs for friends and family to sing along to.. smile  in 6 months, my reportiore is up to around close on 200 songs.

My job involves me going out and distributing catalogues to peoples homes. Last week, i went to where the Americans had one of their bases here in the Uk. It's a place called Bentwaters, at Rendlesham.   I delivered catalalogues to the houses where the Americans used to live, before they departed in 1992. The homes were opened to the public in 1994, for sale or rent. Anyways, my point is (sorry, i do waffle a lot!) is that no road on that American built estate of housing, had a number 13..!

My very first ever guitar, was one i was bought as a 11yr old, to take lessons at school.  I had the lessons for two yrs, then moved along to High School and the guitar was forgotten for 20 yrs..!  My mum kept it for all that time, and now i have it back in my possesion!  My children pick it up and have a fiddle with it from time to time.

Now, the guitar i have learned to play since picking it up again 6 months ago, is a Freshman Acoustic. A lovely guitar, bought brand new for £99. I also have an IbanezGAX70 which has been a wonderful learning tool for the electric player.

Hi lowerbullens. I'll try and explain best i can.  Tabs are drawn to represent the six strings of the guitar.  The top line, is the high (thinnest) e string, going down as B G D A E.  The numbers represent which fret is to be pressed on each string. So, for example,

E|-----------------|--------------------|--------------------|
B|-----------------|--------------------|--------------------|
G|-----------------|--------------------|--------------------|
D|-----------------|--------------------|--------------------|
A|5---3-- ---3---5|---5---3-----3---5|---5---3------3---5|
E|--------5--------|-----------5--------|-----------5--------|

You would play the 5th fret of the A string, followed by the 3rd fret of the A string, followed by the 5th fret of the E string.. etc.. etc..

Sometimes there is more than one number in a column, on these occasions you pluck both numbered frets. And if there is a 0, the string is played open (holding no frets down).

Hope this has helped. xxx

Oh i love listening to Bagpipes..!  There's a guy who stands in the town centre where i live, and he plays them, and is dressed in full finery of Kilt, Sporran, etc.. I could listen all day..!  Even better is the summer carnival, when sometimes they have a band in the procession with about 12 bagpipers playing.  Amazing !

I'd like to second what Russell has said. I too am proud to have been asked to be a part of this fantastic project..!   I sent my mum the MP3, explaining it was a worldwide effort, & she said she listened with a lil tear in her eye, hehe.  The time, effort and dedication from all involved, and ESPECIALLY Roger, is amazing..!

Well done everyone..!  big_smile

Wow.. musta been good then !  One day i HAVE to make it over to the US.   My Aunt lives there, and has raved about Krispy Kreme donuts for 19 years..!  LOL

Can i recommend the Electric guitar i have started out with...?   It's an IbanezGAX70, and in my opinion, is a perfect lil instrument for starting out.  I play it on a MarshallMG15cd Amplifier.  Together the two cost around £140.

I've played on my brothers Fender Stratocaster, and i must say, maybe because i'm just more used to my guitar, that there really isn't much difference!

I think one of the 1st TV shows i ever saw on TV, was a kids program called BagPuss. About a little girl called Emily, who owned a toy repair shop.  Broken toys would be brought into the shop, and the inhabitants of the shop would fix them.  There was BagPuss, a saggy, baggy pink & white stuffed cat, Gabriel, a singing toad, Pofessor Yaffel, a wooden bookend bird, the mice who lived in the organ, and a rag doll, who's name i cannot remember.   I loved watching BagPuss, so much so, that year later, my youngest daughter, was named 'Emily..  smile
