Re: awesome guitar song to impress friends? (15 replies, posted in Bands and artists)
Women seem to love Tom Petty "Free Falling". It's brain dead easy so you're mostly just singing.
Nirvana's "Come as you are" is easy also and everyone loves that. Sounds great on Acoustic also.
If you have two guitars hand one to someone who can half ass play and just strum America "Horse with no name". Easiest song on planet Earth and easy to sing to also. It's impressive to have mad skills but everyone will love you if you go out of your way like that to teach someone and they sound good right away. If it's a girl you're basically fishing with a net.
Good luck!! - Shane

This will probably be contraversial, but I was amazed by the song "Book of Daniel" by David Koresh (yes, that David Koresh). It's on youtube. Anyone know of tabs/chords for this? Thank you. - Shane

Re: How soon did you “outgrow (29 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Started on a decent washburn electric. Learned my chords on it and got comfortable playing. This was February '09. Bought a decent Fender dreadnaught acoustic (dg-11) at a pawnshop about three months ago (May). I've played it till my fingers hurt every day. I am now about to buy this amazingly beautiful sounding Takime Cedar top concert size acoustic. It plays so easy compared to the dreadnaught and is smaller so easier to get your arm around, not as tiring. The Fender cost $100 even and the Takime is going to run me $300 ish. I've been taking lessons the entire time also which has helped me progress for sure. The Takime won't make me a better player, but will address the constant buzzing of the Dreadnaught. I'll keep it though for loud outside playing/campfire etc as theoretically Dreadnaughts are inherently louder than concert size. Hope this helps. - Shane

Picked up a $20 cheapie acoustic gig bag but the pockets are too small and there's no padding. Anyone found a good one (link appreciated) that will hold a Dreadnaught? I'd like a pocket on it that can hold a 3-ring Binder as well. Thanks! - Shane

Topic: Oklahoma City Coffee Shop Jam (1 replies, posted in My local band and me)
After a couple of weeks or consistently playing in the evenings at the Starbucks at NW Expressway & Rockwell, there are starting to be a lot of musicians show up. Most people are bringing acoustic guitars. Show up any Sunday evening for sure, but a lot of week nights people are up there. There's a great patio outside and the employees will turn down/off the Muzac if there are live musicians there. Crowd ranges from 16-30yo.
If anyone wants to meet up there and jam feel free to email me. sshields@mathisbrothers.com. Been thinking about getting some maracas, maybe a tamborine since there are a lot of cute young girls up there wanting to sing along, be involved also. Thanks! - Shane

Topic: Alt Rock suggestions (1 replies, posted in Song requests)
Old guy here (33). I love playing acoustic at the local coffee shop but the songs I play are mostly 60-90's (Beatles/Cream/Green Day/Nirvana/Cure). I recently got turned on to some new stuff (Dresden Dolls - Sing) by a 17yo guitarist. Almost everything he played was stuff I'd never heard before. Pretty much everyone under 23 knew all his songs but none of mine. Can anyone give me a few suggestions to freshen up my play list? Thanks! - Shane

Re: Fender (21 replies, posted in Acoustic)
I play on a Fender DG-11 Acoustic. It sounds pretty good but the action is really high and even with light strings it's a struggle to keep enough finger pressure to not buzz. I thought for a long time it was "just me" but after playing some even $300 guitars at Guitar Center with low action and actual wood bodies (vs laminate) it has A LOT to do with the guitar. I have $250 towards a Takimine save up now. Will be a HUGE upgrade. Can't wait!!

Re: Telecaster neck? (8 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Thanks for the '51 recommendation. I am on the HUNT.
Now if only I could get my wallet on board. Hehe. Looks like the reissues are about $500+ ish. Not out of the question but definately a step up from my 2nd hand Nuno for $230. Am looking at Warmoth and looks like they might be able to do it also since the N2 Bettencourt is mostly a strat copy. Thanks. - Shane

Topic: Telecaster neck? (8 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Spent an afternoon in my local Guitar Center. I tried a lot of different electric guitars and found that I liked the Fender telecaster neck the best. It has a thinner neck near the 2nd fret and fits my hand amazingly well.
I'm currently playing an excellent Washburn Bettencourt Nuno with all the options. I love it but the neck seems a bit wide for me.
The telecaster seems to be an old style guitar. What should I look for to get the feel of the Tele neck on a more modern design?
Thank you. - Shan

Re: Need recommendation for best $100 acoustic guitar (19 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
I picked up a '95 Fender g10 acoustic dreadnaught. Plays like heaven's choir. $100 even with case from a local pawnshop. You literally can do no wrong with it, and it's a Korea mfg. If you find a fender acoustic g10/11 give it a strum. You'll hear the difference between other acoustics immediately. Good luck!! - Shane
