Topic: Amara (How Can I Go On)

I wrote this a while back, but have been tinkering with it over the past year in a half...figuring about what chords I wanted, how I wanted it to go...that sort of thing, so sharing now. I'll get it recorded sometime soon.

Amara (How Can I Go on) By Jeff Gilpin

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lyrics written sometime after 2010 and polished a bit in 2019 & 2020
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Intro strumming C

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Verse 1
[C]Let me tell you so
Of a girl I used to know
She [F]had this kind of air of majes[C]ty,
And the [F]boys across the land
Oh [C]boy how they did [Am]stand
And [D]ogle her from [D7]sea to shining [G]sea. [G7]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Verse 2

Now her name was Amara

And for me well as far ah

As there was no fairer damsel that I knew,

And I would try and woo her

Trying to be her only suitor,

Bur try as I might I couldn’t do.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Chorus
I ask, “[F]Amara can you love me
And put no one else above me?”
[C]Amara asked of me, could I be true.
“Oh [F]true, yes, I will be.
Now Amara can you see
It in your [G]heart to also love me [F]too? ….Amara can [C]you?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Verse 3

But Amara and her beauty

Was observed by one on duty,

It was officer McNalty on his beat,

And McNalty for a time

Failed to witness any crime

While Amara’s beauty gave his eyes a treat.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Verse 4
Now McNalty came up to her
And he said he thought he knew her.
She said, “Officer I think you are mistaken,
Because I’ll tell you true
If ever I’d met you
I would surely remember one so handsome.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Chorus 2

And he said, “[F]Amara can you love me

And put no one else above me.”

Asked [C]Amara, “Can you be true?”

“Oh [F]true, yes, I will be.

Now Amara can you see

It in your [G]heart to also love me [F]too.” [C]

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Solo on verse chords
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Ending Chorus

And [F]so my poor heart

Was then and there by torn apart.

[C]Amara how can I go on without?

[F]Now that she’s wedded to

That other officer in blue

As I’m [G]left alone, no one to hear my [F]shouts.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[G]Amara how can I go on with[F]out you?
[G]Amara how can I go on? [F] Amara? [C]
Re: Amara (How Can I Go On)
I really like the tongue in cheek way you written and sing this song, but I particularly enjoyed verse 3. So witty.
Thick as two short planks
Re: Amara (How Can I Go On)
Thanks - as I said, I've been working on this for a while. I finally got tired of tweaking and put a fork in it. I only recently added the chords to the song, chordpro style, but I played it similarly for years. I didn't intend to have the key so high which was pushing my upper limit when I recorded it. By the time I was done I had to take a long vocal break.
