Re: a topic on anything at all

Hi The fatpainter,

We are all thats good in the world! For a small nation, i think we are WONDERFUL! My Dad used to carve out turnip / Swede. We were not
Always posh you know. But money or nowt, We remain very proud of
History, Traditions, and Culture.  It was the"Irish who took the halloween custom to America, when fleeing from the potatoe famine here.

Your roots must be Scottish or Welch if you were carving Turnips.
My Mam always made the Barmbrack,  One would leave home for
a slice of this brack, so good was it. Not like the synthetic stuff of today.

I still think the Americans are splendid at this type of thing.

Probably Commercialism at its best, but all good!

Now back to work! No! not me!  "You Thefatpainter, all my decor is done:lol:

Re: a topic on anything at all

I am in the time zone of Scotland, so Gmt right now.

and halloween, although good for the kids I thin kpeople take ittoo far, especially ( sorry guys) but the americans, way over the top, I know it is meant to be fun, maybe it is not my sense of humour? this greeting " happy halloween" it just does not sound right.
And as for the irish inventing it, well hmm, yeah, say no more!! lol

turnips, now we are talking!!! I used to carve and hollow out turnips when i was younger as pumpkins were just not to be seen in shops wheni was younger and I dont thin kanyone in scotland grew them until the last 15 -20 years, even then 15 years ago they were pretty scarce.
A big tumshee ( turnip) was excellent at the time but pretty hard to cut and hollow, no where near as easy as a pumpkin!
I was going to get a big pumpkin for the kids this year but told my wife to get it nearer the time. Nearer the time came and she bought one the day before, halloween eve I guess you could call it lol but instead of a great big one she got one that looked like an overgrown tomato!, we still hollowed it out and sat it on the windy sill ( window sill) and lit a scented candle inside.

I just found out the other day it costs about £3 to step inside a taxi these days!! I have not got a taxi for years, last time I got one it was £2.50 to step inside and I thought that was bad.
As for fags ( cigarettes) I stopped buying packets of them when they hit £3 a pack, now they are over £5.
Money should be banned!! these things have went up much higher than the rate of nflation. Taking of which, $2.06 to the £ the other day. Right now is a good time for UK to go on holiday to USA. Such a great rate, I could get a really cheap guitar now.
Bad thing about that is it is a very bad time for americans to visit the UK. So we cannot take all your money to help our ecconomy, lol. We rely on the scottish tourist board and people coming to look for the loch ness monster and all the wild haggis running about. Forget about the red squirrel and red deer and our seals, otters, golden eagles, ospreys, capercallies, grouse, pheasant, scottish terriors and kilted scottish tartan army fans, it is the HAGGIS that you should be coming to see and hunt.
I should start my own business " kill a haggis, win a bevy Ltd" charge £57.43 per head, I will rake it in.

Re: a topic on anything at all

I handed out candy to trick or treaters all night last night, came in excited to sit down and enjoy some good ol' fashioned gore/horror movie marathons like are on every year, only to find to my dissapointment that there weren't none!
what IS this world coming to????
I noticed some little hispanic kids dressed up as soldiers.... and I couldn't help but wonder if that was some kind of statement. I mean are american soldiers supposed to frighten small children? Or maybe halloween costumes aren't supposed to be scary anymore.

Re: a topic on anything at all

Hi lastrebel,

My Son also remarked last night there was no scary movies on the tv.

Among many callers i had a Latvian boy dressed as an Eskimo!

and a chinese girl dressed as a witch. Not a home made costume

at all, nor an Arab in sight? At one time every tea towel in the area
would be the finish to there arab dress. Best dressed kids for
halloween i ever seen!
Ps. tell me about this toilet roll issue mentioned  by you in a thread?

Re: a topic on anything at all

Well in America we do trick or treat, meaning literally 'give me candy or I'll play a trick on you', after about the fourth grade they lose interest in the treat and focus mainly on the trick.
The 'trick' means they either throw raw eggs at your house, or they wrap your house, car, or front yard trees in toilet paper. And trailer park children in America are known for thier mischeviousness, maybe because of the convenient oppurtunity...
They don't do 'wrapping' (or 'toliet papering') where you live?

Re: a topic on anything at all

Strange custom they have in American. From an early age they train their children to be extortionists. lol

Daggone right we do!  Just look to our foreign policy for confirmation...

What I don't understand is the fascination with gore movies.  Horrible, gut-wrenching depictions of extreme - I don't suppose you can even call it gore - just flat-out meanness and pathological hatred.  Sick.  I wonder what message that sort of film presents and how it trains the minds of those who indulge in it frequently.

Old Doll,

the 1st Irish Famine and the Scottish highland clearances both happened within a few years of each other. So there would be folks moving from all over Ireland and the Highlands of Scotland at roughly the same time. I think we may have to call a tie on the "taking Halloween to America" competition.

Let's get drunk and hug our Celtic cousins!

Re: a topic on anything at all

Hi Lastrebel,

well i had never heard of this. Our kids would say" Help The halloween Party"

as they went  around the neighbourhood. It is only in recent times they

Say "Trick or Treat". But today on the radio i heard there was a
lot of damage done with eggs around the country.
Massive damage done with unsupervised Bon fires. Some of these gits,
had frozen some eggs and used them as missiles, breaking windows!

I used to go with my kids to a bonfire, and often over the years organised

the fire works display! for safety reasons. It seems now kids are alllowed
to roam like pack animals without supervision.. Times have changed.

Re: a topic on anything at all

Al,
the highland clearances is still happening today, only instead of burning the houses and forcing the folk onto boats to america or forcing them by the end of a gun to get in the towns and cities, the government are doing it through politics!!, oops no busines here, how are you going to live? yes matey, move your butt!!! ,lol
But iof it was not for these clearances, I would have no bothies to visit!! and this is partly why there are hundreds of abandonded houses in the hills today.

well, the majority of horror movies are so stupid that they're funny. and the gore movies, well its hard to explain. Its kind of like roller coasters, why would you enjoy getting sick and scared? Nobody knows, but they do.

Re: a topic on anything at all

It's a sad reflection on the so called festivities of Halloween when the police have to double their presence on the street to fend off anti scoial behaviour by the so called teenage trick or treaters.
It was so much better here in England when it was a low key affair before the infulence from the USA where it was celebrated to a much larger extent.

Re: a topic on anything at all

I like scarry movies, but I'm with you Zurf don't know how someone could even conceve the violence in the gore movies, and I don't know how anyone could watch them and consider it entertaining...there are images i just do not want in my head.  I know it's "make believe", but I just don't see how watching someone elses pain, even make believe pain, is fun....just don't get it.

And Halloween is over the top anymore in the states.  Used to be you find some stuff laying around the house, make up a costume and go trick-or-treating...every other kid was a football player, or a hobo becuase that's the stuff you had laying around.  Now it's HUGE business.  Within a one mile radius of my house we had 4 Halloween super-stores.

Re: a topic on anything at all

well I have just opened a bottle of red. My wife is not in for a few more hours, just ordered the chinese food, I usually call it the chinky, but I dont want to offend anyone. I am not calling people from china that name, just the food, and since the chinese guy I get it fro mcalls it chinkies too when it comes to food then according to him I can say it.
So, food ordered, first wine in glass after letting the bottle breath for half hour beforehand, kids upstairs playing at making as much noise as they can for no apparent reason, unless they really are out to annoy me. I got my guitar beside me and I will sit here strumming some tunes until the food is here. then prbably ge onto my second glass. After the second glass is finished I will get into my third then forth then the wee dribble at the end just anbout the same time my wife comes in. At least she will get a big warm glowing smile from me. Then the wine is finished and no beers in the fridge either for a change, a big change!! But the bottle of geln Orrin ( only £10 from Aldi) is begging to be opened and if it is lucky enough I may sample one or two.
Not going to get too platereted tonight though, I think I might go walking tomorrow morning depending on the weather.
and I am getting so sick of monkey nuts now!!

anyone live in georgia?

Re: a topic on anything at all

Upyerkilt, I know that you are on GMT as your only 2 Bens and a Glen  to the right of me, but the time that comes up with the posts are not so I wondered what time zone that is? Well done Old Doll I am Scottish and like Ireland our biggest export is our people, usually the good ones with get up and go, got up and went! Also the continuing clearances is the result of house prices which bare no relation to the real world of inflation and wages( a 2 up and down in certain spots in London will bag u 8 room manor house with 30 acres). Talking of Haggis or is that Haggi in the plural, have you seen the amount of roadkill at this time of year poor wee beasties, Slasher/gorefest and horror movies are just not for me I have enough demons without raising more but its the de-sensitization of the young that worries me and a case in point would be Jamie Boldger. Sorry to end on that sad note but the woodchip in the hall has it coming(is that not a lyric in a Pulp song).

Re: a topic on anything at all

Hi Fat painter,

If your time looks different then your time maybe set wrong!
If you go into your profile there is an option there for your own time. I have mine set on GMT.

And roadkill is great, or can be if you get it before the buzzards, foxes, cats etc get it.

When I go long drives an axe and a sharp knife in the boot of the car is handy as it is hard to get a full deer in the boot. A leg is quite enough for a feast and to share round friends and family.
Pheasant is quite easy though, just need a polly bag for them.
I have never tried squirrel but heard it is quite nice and just tastes like rabbit but a bit tougher and harder to skin!
I dont know about other places in the world but here in Scotland if you knock down any game, i.e deer. pheasant, grouse you are not allowed to pick it up and chuck it in your car but if you come across dead animals that have been killed you are free to take. I tihnk this is to stop people going out and trying to run over the animals, but if your mate up ahead of you " accidentally" runs over a poor disorientated animal on the road ( or slightly off to the side if it is safe and no one sees) and kills it, you are legally allowed to take it and eat it. ( just make sure your mate does not sto phis car ,
Not that I do this of course, but I know someone that had doen it year ago. And not with a deer either. have ye ever seen the mess of a transit van after hitting a deer? Ye just dont want to hit one of those beasts.

I will stick to hunting haggis lol

Re: a topic on anything at all

Hi The fatpainter,
Doe a deer a female deer! Beautiful  Beautiful Creature.  Now Fatpainter!
Im just wondering here how many times i would have to hit that GIT "UYK"
with an axe to get him in the boot of my car? I suppose 6 at least for that hard neck of his!  How could he even contemplate that?.
See that wood chip wallpaper, id walk Croagh Patrick barefoot up
and down, rather then strip that stuff off walls. I lost a whole year
of my life one time, trying to get rid of it, Nightmare". I have one small
section under a staircase i look at now and again!! just to give myself the wibbly wobblies and remind me how good life is!
Theres another thing! Plastering? I had a room done recently, well holy
God that stuff gets into creases i didnt know existed. I used sit in the
garden playing guitar. Those workers thought i was nuts! I often
think i am myself! lol

Yes! Do you know i still see that image of wee Jamie being led to his death.

I ofton got up during the night if i thought an animal was distressed. How could anyone be so desensitized to the sound of a child weeping
for his Mam while they tortured him, before killing. My skin crawls just
thinking of it...Poor wee baby.

Loads of warm soapy water for the woodchip, Id get married again
quicker then take that one on!

OI Ma,
yer no one of these vegetarian sort of people are ye?
Meat is wonderful to eat, if it gets accidentally knocked down there is no need to let it go to waste.
Ever wonder why humans have incisor teeth? the eye teeth? the dracula fangs? so we can get them right into the meat and tear it!!
If we were meant to eat veggies and nuts we would all be rabbits lol
And if we were all rabbits how could we play the guitar? lol

now, who will start this DIY guitar thingy thread? lol

seriously though, You know what I want? I want a big pink guitar with fluffy ears sticking out the side.

Me Vegetarian? No!
But i do know this! I lb of red meat is all we need a week! I have 8 brothers
UYK, a lot of them are veggies, not by designer standards. They just dont like the texture of meat. My dad was also like that! Ate all the things they tell us to now.
Died a very young man. So much for vegetarians. Did you ever see a healthy
vegetarian. They always look to me like they need a good bowl of stew!

Love all kind of fruit and nuts. See those Pecans nuts, cost an arm and a leg here. My son is going to bring me home a gansy load of them from boston.
and pistachio. I wonder would James send me a Mississippi mud pie?
He was baking treats here a while ago for newcomers.

Im doing something wrong UYK? Last time my specialist told me to lose
weight. I told him i didnt eat much! The cheeky beggar said"
Helena! No one ever came out of  Bergen Belsen looking as healthy as you?
Imagine i paid him for that informative info? I fell out the door laughing
and so was he! as he counted my 200 Euro.

This is the number you need for your bunny Guitar!
