I can tell  John Wesley Harding

     [Em]   Once upon a time, a story with a happy end,
     [C]   But that's all [Am]in the past,[C] that's all ar[D]ound the bend,
     [Em]   You can't appease me now, those stupid things you said,
     [C]   And you can't pl[Am]ease me now, and [C]we can't start ag[D]ain.
        There's [D]too much history, there's [C]no clean sheets,
        When I g[D]et to hear his story it [C]puts my feet to sleep;
        It's [Am]automatic n[D]othing 'bout a h[D]eart in a [Em]rage,
        M[C]urdered by some [Am]cartoon villain who r[C]ipped out the last [D]page.
< C H O R U S >
     [Em]   Happy ever after, prince apparent and his bride;
     [C]   All his dis[Am]arming charm[C] and her unf[D]aithful sighs.
     [Em]   He's scouting for success, and she's his girl guide.
     [C]   The day the [Am]die was cast, it [C]was the day I [D]died.
        [D]Now your hits are up for grabs, [C]now the chips are down,
        You [D]could be jetting with the set in[C]stead of with that clown
        You [Am]wanted to be [D]on a bridge; all br[D]idges should be [Em]burned;
        Somet[C]imes you must re-[Am]cross and that's someth[C]ing you've never l[D]earned.
< C H O R U S >
     [B7]   There are some tricks that you can't pull,
        I mean the [C]wool that is [Cmaj7]over my [Am]eyes[Am].[Am7] [Am7]
     [D]   That's what happens when looking for love
        Bec[G]omes a game of [C]I spy[D].

But it tells the truth about you to you. So /
        I can [G]te[C]ll[D] when you're t[C]elling l[G]ies;
        I can [C]see it in your[Am]  tired [D]eyes.
        I can [G]te[C]ll[D] when you're t[C]elling l[G]ies;
        I can [C]see it in your [Am]lack of surpr[D]ise;
        I can [G]te[C]ll[D] when you're t[C]elling l[G]ies;
        I can [C]see it in your[Am]  tired eyes.
        I can [G]te[C]ll[D] where your t[C]alent l[G]ies;
        I can [C]see it in your [Am]lack of surpr[D]ise;
     [Em]   I can s[C]ee just where the [Am]truth doesn't l[D]ie
        Watching [Em]you cut thr[C]ough [Am]the bind that t[D]ies.[G]

Playing Notes
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. Play the opening D chord before you launch into the song.
2. Learn the rhythm of the part that goes "the bind that ties" and strum the
triplet in time with the words.
3. You may wish to change the chords for the equivalent parts of the verse to
"It's automatic nothing 'bout a heart in a rage" so that they become
(C, Am, D, Em) instead of (Am, D, D, Em) as in the above transcription.
4. I've included chords for the last verse where it goes to drums only for
those of you who are unaccompanied. These are best if strummed lightly
and once each.
5. After the `drums only' bit, don't forget to say "So" before you move on to
the final chorus section. On the other hand, don't wet yourself if you
forget!
6. The words in a few places could easily be heard as many things. I think
this is pretty much as Wes sings it, but "telling" does sound a lot like
"talent", what about "unfaithful SIZE (?)", "you wanted to be UNABRIDGED",
or "sometimes you must be CROSSED"?
