ok, here's the question(s)....can anyone on here give a fair evaluation of any of the many online instructors based on actual experience?  newer player here.  mainly acoustic, some electric.  have been in private lessons for a year plus now.  feel like i am doing ok but i am at a plateau and i am intriqued by some of the youtube video instructors i have seen as well as some of the dvd courses out there.  looking for feedback from folks who have actually used them.  good and the bad.  marty schwartz seems good.  griff hamlin for the blues.  i see claude johnson got bombed on here by some folks.  how about the jamplay folks?  just looking to expand to what i am learning from my live instructor wit different techniques and ideas for playing.  please let me know if you have used any of these guys/gals and what your thoughts are.  and if you are promoting your own lessons, please refrain from responding.  if you are any good others will pass the info along.  thanks

agreed that you need to let a pro do this for you, especially the first time you have it done to a given guitar.  a set up should include a new set of strings.  a good luthier will ask you what tone you are looking for on your guitar, assuming it is an acoustic.  warm and deep mellow sounds or brighter with more high end.  this allows him/her to choose the correct strings.  once set up you can change your own strings pretty easily.  youtube videos can help here.  a luthier will give a guiter a mechanical once-over as well as a cleaning with the set up so after this you should be good to go.  don't fall in love with a set of strings because you "just had them put on".  if you don't like the sound of a particular set of strings, change them to something else.  strings are cheap and take 15 mins to change.  save the wrapper in your case so you know which strings are on the guitar too.  i bought new strings once and them discovered that they were the same ones i was taking off because they sounded lousy.  save the old wrappers and write on the back whether they were good or what not for future reference.  good luck

index cards on a 2 ring rotary binder.  can put a small desk lamp over it and mount it right onto the mic stand.  alphabetized and it will hold a ton of cards.   the start of each line of lyrics with the chords over it. ("On a long lonesome hwy......") all of you know the rest of this line.   most of us can remember the whole line of lyrics if we hear the first few words.  alphabetical by song or artist so you can fill it up and have a ton of music available for requests without having a huge song book or music stand in front of you.

ok.  thanks for the responses. i will try to hover while at home practising.  instructor likes an anchor.  he won't care which way i go if it works.  also, esteban hat is now in the trash but man i am keeping the sun glasses.  slow seems to be the magic word right now.  funny, you go from feeling pretty froggy strumming and jamming out after a few months of lessons back to "Crap!...Dammit!...wait, try that again...ok, 6-3-1-2...5-3-1-2...   i will get there.  thanks..bill

novice player here. been taking lessons for a while now and next book i am going to be starting is a finger picking book.  wondering if any of you out there have tried the alaska finger picks and if so what you thought of them, good and/or bad.  i have short to med length fingernails and don't want to grow then longer.  hate the upkeep and the look.  i see estaban play and want to gag every time they show his fingernails up close.  anyway, any thoughts?  thanks
