Topic: Still Rolling

This started out as something else and ended up as what you see below. I hope you like it. With the R E S P E C T just say the letters like Aretha sang back in the day

Still Rolling By Jeff Gilpin

June 20th, 2007

Intro

[G] [D] [C] [Em] [C] [D] [C]

Verse 1

We [Em]grew up in the age of [G]Rock and Roll

We [D]shuffled to the R and [A]B

[Em]Colors were blurred and [G]so were our minds

But we [D]weren't too blind to [A]see

Verse 2

We [Em]knew about Sweet [G]Emotion

And [D]R E S P E C [A]T

We [C]knew about Country Roads

And we [D]knew about Honesty

Pre-chorus 1

We [G]grew up with the radio

And the [D]radio grew up with us

[A]Listening to all sorts of music

[C]Before it learned how to cuss

Chorus 1

Still I [G]want [D]you to [C]want me

Like [Em]Super Tramp sang back in the [C]day

And I [G]try a [D]little [C]tenderness

As [Em]Otis use to [D]say

[G]Just like [D]Chaka [C]Kahn did

You [Em]tell me something [C]good

[D]We'll still keep it rolling

Through[C]out the neighbor[Em]hood

Verse 3

Now [Em]music we hear seems to [G]have evolved

It's [D]like a little bit of every[A]thing

[Em]Country's rocking the blues are [G]twanging on

And [D]we got all the rest in be[A]tween

Verse 4

But [Em]just when you think it's [G]completely changed

You [D]hear a song that takes you [A]back

As new [C]artists reinvent themselves

By [D]covering Beatles tracks

Pre-chorus 2

We [G]grew up with the radio

But we're [D]both not grown up yet

The [A]more it changes it stays the same

[C]What a novel concept

Chorus 2

We're [G]still [D]sad and [C]lonely

Our [Em]Blues Eyes Crying in the [C]Rain

Getting [G]high [D]on our [C]memories

And [Em]thinking about Riding that [D]Train

[G]Drifting on that [D]blue ba[C]you

And [Em]dreaming about yester[C]day

[D]We're still rolling

[C]Dreaming it's here to [Em]stay

Break

The [C]new stuff's not the [D]old stuff

But it's [G]definitely the [Em]fruit[D]

And it [C]grew from [D]what we all [Em]planted[D]

Now the [C]old stuff is the [D]new stuff

But [Em]with a different [G]twist[D]

So [C]shout and jump a[D]bout like you [Em]did

Verse 5

I [Em]wonder about where [G]music's heading

Let's [D]say in [A]50 years time

Will [Em]we still [G]recognize it

Will the [D]lyrics still [A]rhyme

Verse 6

Will [Em]we hear retro [G]music

From [D]what we hear to[A]day

Or [C]will our future descendants

Just [D]bury it away

Pre-chorus 3

[G]Will there still be radio

What [D]does the future hold

It could [A]turn to something else

And like [C]Rock-and-Roll break the mold

Ending Chorus 3

It could be [G]bye-bye [D]love and [C]happiness

Or [Em]something in the [C]way

We [G]greet the [D]morning [C]sunshine

That [Em]sends it on it's [D]way

We could get [G]caught up [D]in pos[C]sessions

Like a [Em]gypsy cara[C]van

But I [D]think we'll still be rolling

On down the [C]line until the [Em]end.

Re: Still Rolling

Very nicely said, Jeff.  My grandpa gave me a nifty little protable transistor radio for Christmas when I was 7 or 8.  I would listened to WLS AM out of Chicago for hours with the thing held up close to my ear.

The tinny-sounding music that emerged from that little box was marvelous.  I don't know what ever happened to that radio, but I can clearly recall the music that came out of it.  James

Re: Still Rolling

Thanks James - I had planned to write about an empty nest idea that turned into this that I guess was rolling around in the back of my head. Go figure.

Re: Still Rolling

Hey Riannon - Thanks - I try to put some form of possitive spin on all my songs. I just have a long drive into and back from work so I get a lot of time to think. I'm usually stopped at the light trying to find something to write with so I don't let an idea get away. It's sometimes pretty funny looking at me scramble around.

Re: Still Rolling

Hi Jeff,

Good song and cleverly integrating some artistes and song titles. There is a lot of truth in the lyric and the chords flow well. Time for a 'Badeye' I think.

well done,

Re: Still Rolling

Thanks Slán and Roger - I was as I said going to write about something different and I kind of went down memory lane myself which got me to thinking about the evolution of music and how we ended up with what we listen to today, and what also will tomorrow hold. So I guess it's musical history song.
