Topic: not going to sing tonight

here's a new song. it's not a love song, a rock song or a country Ballard. it's a rage about the inequality of life be it the poor kids of Brazil. the jihadists in the middle east. the rich of all the world. and my disgust that slavery still goes on in the 21st century.

Not Going To Sing Tonight.           Phill Williams.

[D] I'm not going to sing tonight.
Because I [A] feel too sad.
If I could change the world.
And [D] everything that's bad.
I would. Light the lights. Feed those kids.
That [A] live alone on the streets.
And punish those that hurt those kids.
While their [D] own lives are sweet.

[Bm] No-one cares. In their ivory towers.
While their [A] champagne chills on ice.
[Em] Spending more on one small meal.
Than a [G] year of bread and [A] rice. For a family.

[D] I don't want to sing tonight.
While there's [A] war in the middle east.
Take the head of a man who shaves.
Not [D] God but man is a beast.
And who can say that he's better than you?
And [A] they're no better than me.
Still a man is judged but his wealth and skin.
Set those slave folks [D] free.

(CHORUS)

[D] So, I'm not going to sing tonight.
While the [A] crazies rule the world.
Send their armies out to die.
For the [D] glory they don't deserve.

Ask not what Chordie can do for you, but what you can do for Chordie.

Re: not going to sing tonight

Phill I just heard you play this song on soundcloud and it's content  music and vocals worked for me. Now reading your lyrics it has brought it out even more.  A top song with a good message.

Phill

I have gone back and listened several times -  these lyrics are very special and meaningful.

For me they have a John Lennon feel to them.

I also think the Icon Picture of Ghandi fit perfectly . and the expression Ghandi has reminds me of ones I have seen in photos of you ! smile

Another masterpiece from the master !

Thanks for sharing Phill

Re: not going to sing tonight

Heart-wrenching stuff, Phill ... but so true. I have yet to find a solution for this kind of sadness, that doesn't involve sticking my head in the sand and pretending to be ignorant. The message of your song reminds me of something I read once, and although this was written almost 50 years ago, it is more apropos today than it was then:

“Within the last century, man has leaped ahead in scientific achievement but has lagged behind morally, with the result that he is now technically capable of destroying the world, but morally incapable of restraining himself from doing so. Unless the nations of the earth become imbued with the spirit of peace and goodwill, it is highly probably that some trigger-happy politician will fire his shiny new rifle into the ammunition dump, and blow up the world.”  - A. W. Tozer, 1960

Re: not going to sing tonight

hi Jim. high praise indeed from the master of the written word, thank you. years ago when i had the hair to my shoulders and beard to match, i was referred to as John, then Gandhi in the same sentence????

thank you Jandle, it's always good to hear from you.

thanks Peatle, i think of this as a follow up to Grah's last song. it's a subject that has been eating me up for quite a while, especially the story of the fellow in Afghanistan that thought he was safe as the "allies" had got rid of the Taliban, but as soon as they went the TB came back and cut off his head as punishment for shaving his beard! how sick is that?

TF, so sad but true. we all left messages in our underpants back in the 60's with the Cuban crisis. but today with the world being run by businessmen we are in even greater danger. thanks for the listen and comments.
