The Ataris are an American rock band formed in 1994 in Anderson, Indiana. The band released three albums and three EPs through independent label Kung Fu Records before releasing so long, astoria in 2003 on Columbia Records. Although the band was popular among the punk/indie scene, they only achieved mainstream success with so long, astoria and its cover of the Don Henley classic "The Boys of Summer" along with the album's other singles. Their fifth studio album Welcome the Night still does not have an official release date. It was expected in July 2006 but because of problems with their label, they have left and are currently seeking a new label. Recent news indicates that it will be released by the end of 2006.
The band originally consisted of singer/songwriter/guitarist Kris Roe and guitarist Jasin Thomason. Using a 4-Track, they wrote and recorded demos in Kris's bedroom, with a drum machine as the drummer. At this point in time the band was searching for a full-time drummer.
