If it were a Gibson LP classic in tobacco sunburst I would pick it, other wise go for the SG. You did not mention if they were Gibson's or Epiphones.

Here's the bottom line, when you look in the mirror who do you see? Not any of us replying to your post. Tell me who do you see? Your all that matters, someone's views or perceptions of who or what you should be don't matter. You matter and what makes you happy matters. I cannot crawl into your skin and be you, I don't know what is in your head or in your heart (I know who is in your heart though). Life is a learning experience some of us take longer to learn and take the hard way. Some come out unscathed others still have the scars, one thing we share in common is experience gained, good, bad or indifferent.

Scripture say's that we are in this world not of it (paraphrased) so being different is ok. It also say's that we are a particular people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation. So who should you worry about making happy? Does not a righteous man fall 70 times 70. Continue to worship and praise through your playing, be diligent and you will be rewarded. For your time will come and your prayers do not fall on deaf ears. Take it from me I am a very, very blessed man. Though I do not deserve it, nor am I worthy of it but never the less I am blessed as you will be.

Time to get of the pulpit.

Maybe unknown where you come from but here in australia he is probably the most respected guitarist, and I personally probably think he is the most skilled (not best or greatest) guitarist in the world. I think Eric clapton was a famous guitarist just because he was british, there are many american guitarists as good as him.

Eric Clapton is famous because he can play, listen to some of his blues stuff. He can play.

Rockerchick:

Stay smart, it takes time to get old, don't get there to quick. When I was 13 I had a job and had money. So what do you do when your young with money buy dope and think that that is the answer to any problem in the world. You also have friends, being raised in Los Angeles County California and hispanic you tend to grow into and gravitate to social clubs called gangs, the first time I seen some one get shot I was three yrs old and to this day I still remember all three people 2 guys and one girl, good life huh. So now your in a gang and you have money for dope your high and always getting into some kind of trouble. By the time I was 14 years old I had 3 friends, same age dead, dying is no way of life. Change in life style why? I still have money, dope and know everything.

Music always had it playing around the house had money so I bought me a guitar when I was 13 (still have it 33 yrs later). Loved music changed from gangs to garage bands but the dope still stayed. I still knew everything, most of the old friends were now dead and the ones that wer'nt were starting their new future in junivile or prison. Music was great, the drugs got better and I still new everything.

Got older, never got busted, never went to prision, still knew everything. Still had money for dope, drug problem? No, I had the money, I knew what was good and I knew where to get it. Substance and Acohol abuse problem YES because all of the above. How old am I at the time of this grandure the wise age of 19 years old. Get rid of the acohol but the drugs still there and better because I can afford better ones, oh yeah still love music.

Have an older sister that becomes a born again christian, continues to pray for me. Do I need Jesus, no I still have drugs. Should I have ever been busted, or in an accident or killed myself? Yes, still love music. Sister still prays for me, still have drugs, still know everything. Then one night I'm around 25 or 26 yrs old I hear the knocking on my heart and I answer, It's JESUS and HE tells me (implied) all that above doesn't matter that's who you were and this is what you will become. You have opened the door of your heart and invited me in, I died for you and have washed away all your sins and I love you unconditionally.

What did he want in return NOTHING. The point of this part of my life above as lived by me is the choices that you make as a youth. They will mould your character but only you are going to make the choice. Your choices will not only affect you but those who love you. Every choice you make there is a cost. It maybe financially, painfully, emotionally or at the cost of others. The bible says that there is nothing new under the sun, its just a part of your growth that you are experiencing right now. At no time in this reply am I condoning drugs or my previous lifestyle. GOD had a plan for me and HE seem's fit to see me through it. I have recieved a second chance and I still know everything just ask me .

Don't give up immerse yourself in music, I still love music. I now build my own guitars, I love GOD, HE still has not given up on me.
Just hang tight and you'll get through it, and as the Doll said you can always send an email.

Have to disagree

some of the aforementioned are better known as singer songerwriters than guitarist - but
i would say that there are a number who are outstanding instrumentalists and would distinguish themselves in a band even without the bonus of writing their own songs and singing

i think you are being overly influenced by the fact that Raitt and Batten play blues/rock derived lead guitar and that has become the gold standard by which guitarists are judged  - there are other styles of guitar which deserve recogniton too (folk, alternative).

As mentioned above I mentioned them for their playing ablities not their skills as singer/song writers. Your correct in your observation.

Jimmyriddle74,

Can you slide on the broken headstock back to were it broke or is the headstock broken in a couple of pieces? If you can slide it back in to the break than it can be glued. If so then take off the hardware (screws and machine heads/ tuners) get some wood glue apply the wood glue on the headstock and the neck at the break. Get some clamps (the kind of small bar clamps that you squeeze and they close in) place it on the guitar neck or you can tape it in place with painters masking tape it is usually blue in color (it don't leave behind adheseve like the regular masking tape) and tap it in place. Don't for get to wipe off all the excess glue (can be done with alchol/not double malt, or a dampe cloth with warm water) and let it cure for a week. This is a common accurance with Gibsons when they fall over the headstock breaks, unlike a bolt on neck you can just buy a new neck. You should still come clean with your woman and offer her up a new guitar. She'll still love on you anyways.

Old Doll.

Good morning to you Doll our paths have crossed again,

Well at least where I'm at. A couple of questions for you. Are you really blonde? (just kidding smile ) You mentioned that when you practice to long your shoulder hurts. Do you practice standing or sitting? If your standing adjust your strap (guitar) to lower your guitar aleaviating some of your arm angle where it rest on the guitar body. If your sitting, I know it's not proper for a lady but position the guitar while sitting with your legs open to lower its position thus affecting your arm angle.

I don't know what may be causing the echo sound without the guitar in my hands, it could be a number of things that one is tough to trouble shoot without the guitar.

Due to experiences with women (they don't come with an instruction manual) I don't recommend anything I only suggest (with respect). I am always for getting a new guitar. With that said I know what I look for in a guitar acoustic or electric but I don't know what you like or the sound your looking for. The bottom line is you because you have to be happy on what your spending your money on. Go play a few guitars (preferable before Girley night out) play them as if you were at home practicing you'll know the one when you play it. Hope this helps.

Good luck and it is alway a pleasure to hear from you big_smile.

I finished my swamp ash black dyed strat last night big_smile and did the setup. The tone even without pluggin in is amazing, the sustain drips. I plugged it into my Rockman headphone amp this morning, the Fender Texas specials are a good investment, this guitar screams blues. I don't know if you can tell but I am one happy guitar slinger this morning. I put my black korina flame top on hold for a couple of days because it is raining right now and with the weather it takes longer for finish to dry so I will give the finish time to set up before I steel wool it and add more coats. Besides I have a new toy to keep me busy right now big_smile. I'll keep you posted on the progress.

I'm with you on most of your list, good picks on Santana, Warren Haynes and Eric Johnson. What era on Garry Rossington, the first Skynyrd, Rossington Collins Band or the ever changing current Skynynrd line up? I urge you to listen to the "Street Survivors" album/cd (I have both) Stevie Gaines does some great work on it. He plays the first lead on "That smell" also the harmony lead with Allen Collins and the openning lick on "I know a little. He was really fluid.

Condensed by Bootlegger to address a portion of the post 9-22-07.

Phil,

The A&R reps of today aren't the same the are looking for trendy type music that is going to bring in revenue or commerical success which still equals the almighty dollar. The musicians you mentioned on the chitlin or bar circuit as you wrote are doing it out of passion for music. Most if not all of them dream of the big time, but I bet that the majority of them would play for free if you did'nt have no money to pay them. But they do get paid because they have bills to pay just like you and me. You will find alot of musicians that should be signed to a major label but they play what I call musicians music. The ones who recognize their talent are other musicians. I don't know the percentage of A & R reps that are or have been musicians if any.

In any given giging situation you have to know all the chords so you can play. Also some times vocalist change keys and you have to transpose, play flats or sharps to accomidate their vocal range so they don' sing off key. It will also make you more verse, with that said I 'don't know if your playing casuals or with anyone. Just a thought to broaden your horizon.

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, with that out of the way am I understanding that you snapped the headstock off your girls acoustic guitar? If so where and angle is the break? If it is below the fingerboard you have to cut a scarf joint and attach a new head stock. What brand of guitar is it? If it cost less than $250.00 american then buy her a new guitar because you broke the other one and it will be cheaper to replace it. To change the neck is a major job that would run around $400.00 american including parts and labor. Buy her a new one let her pick it out this way she is getting what she wants and it shows remorse from you. The benefits maybe worth it. As James said be honest with her she may be understanding.

Alot of good luck!

(this is not a poll, I am trying to decide whether to buy an A/E or a nice acoustic and adding a pickup. I plan to do some performing in the future)

Which do you guys like the best or in your opinion...which sounds the best? An acoustic/electric guitar from say Taylor, Martin, Takamini, Breedlove, etc. or...a nice acoustic and have a pickup installed. (again, purchasing the same brands) I ask because I was testing an Martin A/E guitar yesterday. It sounded nice but I feel like it didn't sound as good as it would have if it were plugged in. And I didn't want to deal with having the shop owner turn on an amp, plug the guitar etc. So I sorta left unsure.

When purchasing a nice standard acoustic...you hear a truer sound and you either like it or not...and I would assume, adding a pickup would only enhance what you already love. Does this make sense?

Anyway, I am in the market to purchase a guitar so your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hazen

An A/E will sound the same as an acoustic with out a pickup when unplugged. THere is not much weight difference of the two only when it has large on board controls mounted on them them the tone is only slightly different. The pickups, (under the saddle, sound board) are designed different than the sound hole pickups and you will get a different tone. Check out the DTAR mama bear www.seymourduncan.com it is made to get a truer acoustic sound.

Your correct as to personnel prefrence is going to make the decision on what guitar manufacture you choose, your paying for it, it has to sound good to you. 2 of my 3 acoustics have built in pickups.

I was looking at a dean MLX any one have one of those? I would like a les paul but those things run like $1000-$2000 I am more like $100-$200. I would use it with mostly rock/metal.

Be patient and save some more cash up and get a better quality guitar. All the guitars you mentioned are beginners guitars and bottom of the line. I should have read your post more carefully. Since you have a squire strat already go to www.guitarfetish.com and take a look at there single coil pickup sets you can buy one less shipping for about $70.00 american, you can also buy a new pick guard if desired (I like pearliod type pick guards). The higher output pickups will give that squire some guts. Then you can save up for your upgrade guitar and still have your squire as a lay around guitar. (leave it out on a stand so when ever you want to practice or play scales if it falls over you won't need counciling because you damaged your new love... Guitar speaking of course).

Don't do it you don't have the tools or the experience, you can screw it up and have to pay to get it right anyways. To lower the action on an acoustic you have to either sand the bottom of your nut and saddle on a level surface like a piece of flat glass with sand paper on it. If you don't you will sand uneven loosing the original radius of the neck. You also have to adjust the truss rod to either relieve or add some tension. Typically you don't have shims under your saddle unless someone put them there to raise the saddle. You also have to know how much to sand down other wise buy a set of nut files, a nut saw and a couple of extra nut and saddle blanks so when you fubar the one on the guitar you have plenty more to get it right. I could tell you to go ahead and do it yourself but when you take it in the shop to get it done right I would not be paying for it the money is still coming out of your pocket not mine. So if your not comfortable or have doubts, get it done by a luither or tech and get it done right. You will be much happier with the results.

Goodluck!

You know, I wrote it already, are there places in the USA, near you, because as I told, it is still a dream of me to build an own guitar.
Of course, in work shops they show you different models in wood, and you do the difficult part, like placing humbuckers, single coils, let's say the hardware and the finishing.

A maybe impossible question to answer, do you have an idea how (I use here a Gibson, naked) it will sound if you put, let's say 2 humbuckers, and 2 single coils, all together in 1 guitar?
_______________________________________________________________________________

GITAARDOCPHIL SAIS: MAKE THE IMPOSSIBLE POSSIBLE

I am still working on them the hand rub finish I do when I get home from work I do one coat a night. On the Black korina I have 12 coats and about 18 to 28 coats to go for the desired finish I want. The black dyed one has 5 coats and 25 to 35 to go. I can do 3 to 5 coats on each saturday and sunday. I have to have good light to blend in each coat, other wise you end up with a dry spot. The wiring for the black dye strat is already done all ihave to do is connect the hot & ground to the input jack. Once I am done with the finishing (10 days estimated) that guitar will gotogether in about two hours including the set up. I need some black parts and figure what neck wood combination I want for the black korina (african limba) body strat.

You cak buy guitar kits and learn how to build from there or there are placves you can vacation at to learn how to build guitars, I taught myself.

Why would you want to have two humbuckers and two single coils. You can use a 5 way switch (strat blade type) and split the coils of the humbuckers and play the humbuckers together or you can wire three humbuckers and put coil taps (push pull pots) to play the pickups the same way as the five way switch. Your humbuckers have to be a four lead humbucker (4 + 1 ground) to work.

I have been working on two strat type guitars, one a swamp ash body dyed black with Fender texas special pickups on a white pearloid pick guard wired with a tone mod (when you lower the volume your tone does not drop off), rosewood/maple neck, sunken Jim Dunlop strap locks and chrome hardware.

The second is a flametop black korina on black korina back, Rockfield SWC pickups wired on a 5 way blade switch (to split coils and play either or both humbuckers or single coils at the same time), black sunken straplocks, black hardware. I haven't made a selection on neck/fingerboard woods yet and I am thinking of making the neck for this one.

Both bodies have a tru-oil hand rubbed finish that I am currently doing (when I not on chordie have to let each side dry for 1 hr.).
When I'm done I will try to post some finished pictures. I can trouble shoot a guitar problem from an email but I hav'nt figured out how to post a picture.
