Thanks Dino. I knew there was a reason to celebrate today. Happy birthday Pete's grand-daughter.

My Skype name is Derek.Zurfluh. It's a clever code that Momma Z. gave me. If you see me on-line, I'll play with you. I had insomnia last night so I could well be up. My office is sound insulated, but I'd still have to be a bit quiet. I've just started working on Summer Breeze this week so would like to get some constructive criticism.

Z described my life pretty well. I enjoy paddling, hiking, biking, camping, fishing, photography, Bible study, reading fiction (Westerns), reading non-fiction (mostly natural histories and fishing). I get to do these things... not much...for exactly the reasons Z Guitar already described.

To address your worries MKM. First, guys actually like the ponytail through the ballcap look. You aren't fooling anyone with it. We know it means you didn't have time to "do" your hair. We don't care. It's cute. Second, you'd look good in a proper sun hat. Not all hats are for all people. I see you with a straw hat with a large front brim wrapping around a bit on the side, or perhaps a bit floppy one made of raffia and a small crown. But take Billie Joe (Chris' wife). She wears that straw cowboy hat and it looks terrific on her, but I don't think that'd be your look. Third, smiles work for everybody. If you smile enough, you don't even have to hold a guitar. You can just wiggle and bang a tambourine on your leg once in a while a la Josie and the Pussycats.

Re: Protecting myself from the netherworld (28 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
It was WAYNE! Not Pete.
Pete and Wayne have both been maligned. My apologies to each of them.
My new hat does not have mojo yet, but I will be working on putting some into it. I have two hats with mojo, but they are both felt hats much too warm for Virginia spring or summer, especially inside. One is a hunter green crusher fedora my sister decorated for me with scraps and buttons and such that all came from family items. There's a big wooden button from my grandfather's work apron, some lace from my grandmother's wedding dress, a feather from a hawk that I scared accidentally while hiking with my sister, that sort of thing. It is LOADED with three generations of mojo. The other is a flat-top, flat-brim crusher I purchased for fall and winter hiking. It is bright green with a purple hat band. It is hideously distinctive. My wife hates it. I do not. Its mojo comes from miles and miles and miles of trails and the experiences had with friends and nature while wearing it. That hat once triggered an impromptu party on a rocky overlook of the Shenandoah River. Now there's some hat mojo!
The new hat is a medium-high crowned, wide brimmed, crushable, breathable fedora with just the right amount of pucker on the front of the crown for a proper three-fingered grab. Once on, the brim naturally forms itself into a nice bend over the ears the way a wide-brimmed fedora should.

I'm going to let you in on a secret. There is no lightbulb over my head. That's a bright idea on the verge of formation.
You'll have to ask Pete whether the hat thing applies to ladies too, but I think it doesn't. I think it only applies to self-professed fans of strumming country tunes using cowboy chords, such as myself.
Nevertheless, I am now prepared.

Re: Bet you can`t beat these lyrics? (1 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
That fits in with my attraction/repulsion thread quite nicely. Those songs where you reject all social convention contain some of the most innovative lyrics.
Beat it for what I'm not sure, but for expressing a particular desire or describing something there are some that are at least as apt. Guy Clark has some outstanding couplets. Like this one from The Randall Knife:
"It almost took his thumb when he mistook it for a tool.
No, the blade was meant for darker things and you could not bend the rules."
Or this from, I think Paul Overstreet wrote it, in Too Gone Too Long when it comes to expressing a lack of desire to see someone:
"You came a long way going the wrong way.
Don't even set your suitcase down."

I had hoped to get some snapshots with my web cam, but will have to enlist some assistance or try to find a tripod to use a regular camera to get all the different hats I've tried.

I think it was Pete Benson who told me that if I play guitar and sing for others while not wearing a hat that I'd go to a very warm and unpleasant place upon death. He further told me that baseball hats don't count. I tried several different hats. But I've found one that I think will work. It is made with - believe it or not - paper. Well 63% paper and 37% polyester. It looks like raffa, but is much, much more comfortable.

That doesn't look like it's in rough shape to me. That looks terrific.
There are a few songs for which I'd like to have a 12 string.

Re: I'm in a big Rutt (8 replies, posted in Acoustic)
All Hank Williams songs are pretty much the same.
Pick something from a different genre, or put a Hank Williams song in a different genre. Jambalaya is almost a cajun song anyway. Go ahead and give it a full Zydeco rhythm treatment. Or do it as a Bo Diddly beat. Force yourself to break that habit.
Also, you can look up different generic strumming patterns. Force yourself to slow way, way, way down and learn three or four of them. Try strumming a song with only down strokes on the down beat. Then do the same song as down/up/down/up the whole way through.
The key is to force yourself to slow down, evaluate what you are doing rhythmically (but still within your ability) and do something different. You have to develop some pretty intense concentration to do it, but you need to be doing that anyway.
Good luck.

For me, far more impressive than The Three Tenors. Hey, those guys are great but they aren't Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson, and Ricky Skaggs all on the same stage at the same time. 23 songs on it and every one worth listening to. OK, 23 tracks. Some of them are introductions. I hate it when introductions are separate tracks from the songs, but for some reason song engineers seem to enjoy frustrating those of us who enjoy shuffle mode.
Just picked up this CD today.

Topic: Playlist concept (also on facebook) (6 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
I came up with a playlist concept of songs of attraction or repulsion. The lyrical creativity of the desperate or embittered is fun. Some starter songs:
Attraction:
Hello I Love You, The Doors
Repulsion:
Cry Cry Cry, Johnny Cash
Here's a Quarter (Call Someone Who Cares), Travis Tritt
Too Gone Too Long, Randy Travis
Suggestions encouraged.

There was some hope at tonight, but MKM was going to host and her dog is about to burst with babies. So she's keeping close tabs on the doggie instead (which seems the right thing to do). I am only a maybe for Friday night, as there's some stuff I need to do with the family, but if I can kind of secretly rush them through it and get back home (yeah right, like anyone's going to listen to dear old Dad), I would LOVE to play. I will keep checking in frequently on Skype and see if anyone's about.
