I know progress has given us a lot of improvements but honestly if you have to go online to tune your guitar it seems to me progress is making us lazy, is it really so hard to tune 6 strings without the aid of a computer a simple pitch pipe or tunning fork will provide concert A or 4/40 and your ears should take over from there ![]()

southpaw I think what I like best about the engineer on my sessions is he's much like the one you were working with, willing to try different ideas and offering suggestions and very respectful of the artist so we gel and the results show it one more thing ego is fine in the studio behind a microphone,in fact its almost a necessity but when the track is done and you sit down in the control room and listen to it ego gives way to objectivity and reality because the recorder dont lie and a bad note or vocal mistake cant be covered up only redone till its either right or omitted, yes I feel the same I would also like to spend most of my time as a session musician or recording artist whats better?
absolutely nothing uh huh ![]()

Atta boy always something new to learn, I do each and every day, I wrote a song "chains of growing" about the stages of life it reminds me of a quote (this may not be exact) it go's "when I was a very young man I thought my parents were stupid, but as I grew older I realized how much smarter they got
OK Sir,
Just this once, and bowing to your better judgement, I will for the very first time de-tune my guitar.

Re: Studio Day I (9 replies, posted in Recording)
Ken I think before you go into the studio you have an understanding with whoever is producing and by producing I mean who's paying for the session, you sit down and talk about it with the producer and the sound engineer and hash it out and if you agree to let someone else pay for your recording time then he calls the shots, simple as that, and he would not offer to pay if he didn't believe you were really worth it. If on the other hand you are paying for the studio time then you have the final say but you must have faith in the engineer to point out your mistakes because this is what he dose for a living and most likely has recorded hundreds of artists so you have to believe he is correcting your mistakes in your best interests
what i hate about someone producing your own work is they tell you what to do. You want t oplay it theway you want but yu are suppose to rely on the producer to tell you what sounds better for what you are doing, or what they think will sell and since they are supposidly the experts ye need to listen to them.
I would do a lot more of my own producing but i know I suck at it. But in my mind I know what I want. I should have went t ocollege to do a course on this when i had the chance years ago.Ken

A big amen to that Jerome,I return to the studio next saturday and I can echo your sentiments, Most people are of the opinion you just walk in a studio and sing or play a part and your out of there in ten minutes with a CD in your hands...well its not that easy, and believe me its hard work to get a quality recording because altho you may think its ok (and this is because your tired of redoing your mistakes) the sound engineer rules,he will tell you when the track is good and wont accept a second best performance because thats his job and whoever records in a studio must understand this, and be happy someone is monitoring your output in your best intrests so when you do leave with a CD of your recording it will be your best effort ![]()

Re: CHALLANGE 11 (11 replies, posted in Recording)
I know your stubborn Roger
but your not a fool
and the song sounds better with the open E and A chords and by the way I retunned my guitar a half step down and it had nothing to do with cheating I had to add additional tracks and it just sounded better then useing modified chords or a bar Eb it changes the feeling of the song the tried and true open E to open A is best,in my opinion
Thanks Russ I will give that a whirl later. I must admit I was trying to be lazy and not have to work it out for myself. I am quite happy to work in Eb and I would not re-tune my guitar because, stubborn old fool that I am, I beleive that anything other than standard tuning is a cheat.
Tanks again,
Roger

When You edit the comment the original post still remains only an administrator can remove the original post
I would also wonder about the possibility of hackers using the comment editing facility to change original posts - are the changes noted by chordie ?

Re: CHALLANGE 11 (11 replies, posted in Recording)
Roger I'll see what I can do,as this song was transferred from a cassette it is in Eb but in reality its really E so tune your guitar 1/2 step lower and you should be able to find them, for the most part there's only 2, E and A with a turn around D C B if you dont tune the guitar 1/2 step lower the chords are Eb Ab and the turnaround is Db B Bb and back to Eb so try tuning your guitar 1/2 lower and play along with the music you are sure to find it and if not I will give the changes bar by bar and if anyone else has the same problem chime in so I can put the chords in order but try my suggestion first if your unsuccessful in locating the chords I will be happy to copy and paste the arrangement
Hi Russ,
I have had a listen and want to have a go but as I am not the best wordsmith in the world I am struggling a bit. If it is not against the rules can you possibly post a bar by bar chord progression which will help me and maybe others too?
Roger

I was reading this thread and it occurred to me that I forgot to mention the obvious answer,I have been playing music for almost 50 years in bands, recording studios and as a solo performer, music is my life,my joy and my passion. There have been a lot of ups and downs in my career but I would change very little,to be sure there were moments and events I wish never happened we all do but that's the best part of life to experience all it has to offer and make the most of your gift because that's what it is a gift or blessing and to sum it up music is my life ![]()

Helena,Ark,Kenny,Phill it was a pleasure to be part of this project, emails crossing the oceans, files soaring into space to a satellite and beamed on a stream of light carrying minuscule atoms of information morphing into a Melodie and collected and returned then fed into editing programs where they are dissected and transformed and rearranged into a final 5 minutes of thought provoking entertainment, and this is only the beginning.......

things are a little looser here, im more interested in recording and original music and this concept of producing songs for members may take a while to take hold but at least the structure is in place and the idea has worked on several projects already so im optimistic and look for a good new year we only lack participation from other members and this squabble going on is not helping matters it would make a good song "the poets rebellion" I think I will compose some music for it
I'd like to help with that.

I think that is the "your your own worst critic syndrom" I do that often only because theres no one but mysely to critique it and I think that fingerpicker is going to end up being you if no one else can keep up posted on the progress of your demo and a sneak preview if possible
Oh absolutely. The funny thing is though, for this guy, it works. He's our best song writer, but he's pretty particular about having something finished before we bring it out to the public.
Last gig cracked me up, though. We have a girlie calendar hanging in our rehearsal space, and he noodled down some lyrics as an ode' to one of the girls on it. We were on a break at a gig a few days later, and he's furiously writing down lyrics at the bar. 10 minutes later he steps to the mic and belts out this nifty little ditty about Ms. November. We all fell into a four part harmony right on the spot. It was a hit, and the first time anyone had even heard the song, including the guy that wrote it!
So things are weird like that. ![]()
