It's unfair of me to include some of these, because I'd be unable to play them and do any justice, but here are some suggestions.

City of New Orleans. I think Arlo Guthrie wrote it. Everyone has performed it.

I've Been Everywhere as performed by Johnny Cash. I think Hank Snow wrote it, or maybe he was just the original performer that JC covered. It names pretty much all the cities.

Wanted Man by Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan.  Lots of city names in that one, too.  (Warning, contains a potentially offensive image in the video)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRfn5l5PvcY

Dixie Chicken mentions Memphis.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3z-GwdaKrn8

Lyle Lovett's LA County.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uGyClRhGg0

John Hiatt's "Memphis In The Meantime"  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwhLdr01c6U
Here's a link of the same song just for Bill! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDdkwwiV-is

Guy Clark's "LA Freeway" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPUMthAXJ-o

The Monkees "Last Train to Clarksville" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcXpKiY2MXE

I need another guitar to have a high action so that I can start to learn slide more readily. I was thinking of a hollow body electric.

Jim - Could you please resend your e-mail? I opened it, and accidentally deleted it somehow. And it doesn't show up in my Deleted folder.

I'll send you my e-mail address. Send me a chord chart of a song you'd like me to try, and I'll try it. I can't promise it will sound anything like you expect, but I'll try it.

Edit to add: That guitar always sounds good. It's so nice, it practically plays itself. It's my Guild D40 Bluegrass Jubilee.  If you ever get the chance to play one, take it. The bass is deep, clear, and LOUD.  It sounds good strummed, fingerpicked, or flatpicked.  Absolutely wonderful guitar.  As for me, I'll just say that I'm glad you like it. To me, my voice sounds strained and off-key, but I am truly glad that you like it and I thank you for saying so. It's a real encouragement.

"K" song.  Hal Ketchum's Small Town Saturday Night, in which Zurf plays a solo on the wrong string, speeds up, forgets the order of lyrics, and gratuitously inserts four bars wherever he deems it convenient.

Zurf that was fun. You had me tapping my foot and chuckling along with you.

I really had been playing my Tak and decided I had to pull out the big dreadnaught to okay that one. It's not right to play a country rock song on anything else if there's one available.

Here you go!  It hits both the D song and the R artist category.  Eddie Rabbitt's Drivin' My Life Away.  I was just goofing around with this one. I haven't played it in forever and decided to get my head into a country rocker in '78 mode.

Thanks - but someone else did the hard work, I just played it smile

I had a listen to your three songs as well, the Jimmy Buffet song really suited your style; nice and mellow, was perfect for when I was having my breakfast and morning coffee!! smile

Cheers

Well, playing piano tunes on guitar isn't that easy either. While someone else may have put up the chords, you had to arrange the way in which you were going to play it. In my experience, with piano tunes, it's either try to replicate the feel or go a completely different way.  I usually do the latter, but I think you did a terrific job of arranging your playing approach to give the feel of Elton John's piano on that song. Not an easy task at all, even if someone else figured out the chord structure.

I'll think this through. One of the tricks I use to get to sleep is to come up with a category and then try to fill that category in alphabetical order. Without having seen this post, my category last night was "places in songs".  So I had Ashtabula, Baton Rouge, Chicago, Detroit, Egypt (this was a stretch from Walk Like An Egyptian), etc.  Cool category!

Thanks. I had a slip up in there, and probably should have kept going until I got it right. However, I approach recording as if we're sitting around a campfire, and I make a lot of mistakes sitting around the campfire.

My first post in this forum, I think.

Jets60 asked me to cover his song Some Days, which is a real honor because it's my favorite song that he's written, and he's written a lot of songs that I like.

Hey. Sorry I've not been around much this month yet.

Here's a D song.  Steve Goodman and Jimmy Buffett's Distantly In Love -

And, because I messed up and thought it was L as the other song instead of J, I recorded Rodney Crowell's Leaving Louisiana In The Broad Daylight, which I will provide as a special bonus song.  Maybe we can pretend that his name is spelled Krowell?

I guess now I'll work on a J song.

WHAT?

L-R, back row, Garuchi (blue hat), Bee Rad (red hat), Jeff Somethingorother, Sullen English Guy, Bones, Topdawgz, me (World's Okayest Guitar Player), Topdown, Handsome Guy who sings and plays unreasonably well, Pepper Harth, Roger Banks, Victoria Lept...something Greek), Wyatt, Southpaw Ramone (he's not really a Ramone, but he's doing that "I'm not paying attention to the person with the camera and not really sure what's going on here" Ramone-esque look).

L-R, front row.  Starting with kneeling guy, who is Keith Fulp, Ed "Bad Ass Cat" Burrows, Kristin, The Steve, and finally - Evan! (Southpaw's eldest).

I may have

Awesome!

It's on my calendar. I'll probably have to drag along the work computer and do a little work between evening sessions. Do I have a piece of floor again, or should I start looking for options? I'm good either way.

I'm in touch with Pete on Facebook. I don't know why he doesn't post on Chordie.

I hope your brain gets well. That sounds pretty serious.

I started using a book called "Idiot's Guide to Guitar Exercises," which sounded just about right for me. I've only just started, but the exercises are quite difficult. They're pushing my ability to concentrate and make my fingers behave.  If you've got some practice time coming up, you might want to consider it or something like it.  Those structured exercises seem to make a real difference for me. The book I mentioned is about $20 from Amazon.

Crime rate in Virginia Beach is kind of high, but very localized. Stay out of those areas, and the whole of Tidewater Virginia area can be very nice. A visit to the Police or a check of police blotters in the papers will let you know the areas to avoid.  One thing to know about Virginia Beach is that it isn't just Virginia Beach. You go seemlessly across borders into other towns with only a sign to mark them. Virginia Beach, Hampton Roads, Chesapeake, etc.  It's generally thought of as "The Tidewater Region" in Virginia, with Virginia Beach referring literally to the beach and not usually the town.  It can be a bit confusing.

I've not been to Charleston, SC yet, but my company has an office there. The people who live there absolutely love it and wouldn't want to move elsewhere. I'm eager to visit the location.

I know nothing about Myrtle Beach.

Sounds like a big time on a small island. Happy New Year.

Happy nude beer, er uh, New Year (except to Topdown, he'll probably do the former) to all of you.

I plan to be at home tonight and stay off the roads on Amateur Night. I hope all the Uber and Lyft drivers who are keeping others safe while earning a buck or two earn a whole lot of tips and stay safe themselves.

I'm going to see a movie and take my kids shopping to spend some of the gift cards they were given for Christmas and take advantage of the after Christmas sales. Then home and probably some picking.

Beamer and I were thinking of doing one around 5 or 6 PM Eastern. I may be a little late to it, as I have some afternoon family plans, but I'd very much like to have one of our virtual campfires.  You and Beamer and Mekidsmom all have my cell phone number.  Send me a text if you get a time worked out after say... 12:30PM Eastern when my plans kick off.
