Welcome to the Forums Flynfish (Bill), see you been "lurkin"" awhile !! wink

Now the greeting is tended to.... tell us a bit about yourself and especially what kind of music you are into.  Would like to know about your preferences in pickin' style to best advise you as there are a whole slew of places out on "web-land" that tutor on picking..... flat-pick or finger-style, or "hybrid Chet Atkins" .  Not even to get into the countless variations of those.

To start that journey it is always helpful to get your head around the scales and there is a bit of valuable information in some postings stored in the Music Theory section right here on Chordie !  Kudos to Jerome and Russell for valuable contributions to that area!

Most folks here would heartily recommend Justinguitar on the good-ol' Youtube for the lessons he has posted, and I would start with his stuff to "get your feet wet".  He has good technique and clearly explains everything without being "patronizing"..... the kind of guy you might not mind hangin' out in the Pub with on a week-end.

Again Welcome aboard and visit often, there be lots of friendly folks here on Chordie!

There were some problems earlier just after the "upgrade", and you may have found a "bug".  Check out this thread and possibly move your post up there for possible fixes:  http://www.chordie.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=28673

Welcome back to the Forums by the way !

I play in Barres all the time on acoustic..... not as often in Bars though.  I'm totally behind what that Bald Guitar Fellow said !!  Most of our (including me) problems with finger placement and clean sounding chords/notes can be directly attributed to poor habits formed while we were still learning. (some of us get to blame arthritis though).... wink  Get the posture right and thumb well behind the neck, practice in short sessions often, and it will all come together.

Edited to Add:  Try to learn to form your "first position" open chords without using your index finger also. the A,D, E, G, C, and minor shapes are mobile up the neck with the addition of the "index finger Barre" and it might make transitions into and out of Barred forms easier down the road.

TF. I remember what you are talking about..... they're still there.  You might just be looking at something that only has one option indexed.... for example if you look up Allman Brothers in the Artist search and scroll down the list, you will see something like "Blue Sky (4)", and if you click on that it will stack the four options on the page for you to choose which you prefer to view.

Thanks a lot for summing up, Amy.

To get the discussion rolling again, lets try to make it more targeted. Lets say - purely hypothetical - that Chordie was in the position of getting 100 custom made guitars from an high quality guitar manufacturer. Obviously there is no one-size-fits-all for guitars, but perhaps there are some designs or features that are better suited to, or more characteristic of, a specific theme or "purpose"? Lets say - still purely hypothetical - that the theme that was chosen was "campfire" and that the target price was sub-$500.

In other words - how should the specification for such a guitar be?

- solid Sitka Spruce top (cheapest of the spruces)
- laminate mahogany back & sides
- 00/concert/folk body size w/ single cutaway
- mahogany neck w/ rosewood or Richlite bound fingerboard
- 1.7" nut (Tusq nut, saddle, pins)
- no pickup needed (no electricity at a campfire, right?)
- fan-braced top, not X-braced (more lively, more resonant)
- 24.5" scale (familiar playability)
- maple for all body bindings & rosette

Finally ... a heat-embossed logo into the lower bout of the top, with a campfire graphic, and the name "Chordie Campfire" underneath it when held vertically.

This should be capable of being built at a $500 price tag, but still offer a decent quality, rich sounding guitar, that will feel "familiar" in most guitarist's hands.

NICE SPECS!  I especially like your idea for the graphic!!  wink

I can sure visualize that and it does sound like a good instrument!  I'm pleased with the inclusion of bindings (wood or laminate) as it not only protects the corners from dings, but is really needed to stabilize a solid top against cracking.  I would include a truss rod for future adjustments, and "consider" a "string through" saddle (no pins) so one could widen the nut slots and string to nylon easily and "tool-less" string changes for everybody.  Radius fretboard? Something like a 10-12" radius? 14 fret to the body in that short scale length.  I also agree no on-board electronics.... pick-ups are easily added later and there are good ones that don't need batteries (ask Amy about K&K).

I just read Amy's post in this section "Mom is going to shut it now."...... and I heard a rumour that Sunday is Mother's Day!?
That special time of year to say a big Thank You to Moms everywhere.  So call yours, or give her a hug, or flowers or whatever seems appropriate..... after all without Moms where would we be???  wink

Have a Good Day Ladies

Your friend

Bill

Another plus is likely no interest.... AND most importantly, you get to actually look it over up close and personal, maybe play a tune or two before you end up signing at the door only to find out "it don't fit!".

Good One Bill !!

Welcome to Chordie!!

Scott is a good guy, and you have come to the right place for encouragement on your journey.  There are folks hanging around here that range from beginning "back-porch players" to professionals (as in doing this music thing for an actual living!), and all the stuff between.

Good advice so far, but the most important in my view.... is never...never be shy about asking questions, 'cause the answers are golden!

Welcome Aboard!

Let's see, you have Dogs, and a creek in the back yard...... AND (I'm guessing) White Carpeting !!!? wink

Really we have 2 (a Golden & a Lab), sometimes 3 Acres doesn't seem enough.... until it's time to "weed-whack" the fenceline.  Looks like a nice place to live !

Thought I'd toss this one into the mix.... Calum Graham, another of those fine talented Fingerstyle players from up North.  This tune a little bit cross genre but really showcases this young man's versatility and talent !!

I think that there is some misunderstanding here.

This is not to find an existing guitar that will fit the bill, but to have a custom built 'Chordie' guitar. Custom built to the specifications that are deemed to be the best the input that comes from these discussions.

Roger

Are you sure Roger??? If you had a builder to put one together for you, and a $1.000,00 budget..... you might just acquire the woods and essential hardware.  A local Luthier friend of mine just received his new Breedlove, and he went to the factory, specified the model, woods (and hand picked all the panels himself), waited a year+ for the thing to come down the line at the custom side of the plant, and it only set him back about FIVE TIMES that cost. Despite deep discounting for being the #1 dealer in the Region for that Manufacturer.

It's Beautiful and sounds/plays devine...... NOT your "toss in the back of the pickup with the lawn chairs" instrument.  There are too many really good ones already built out there, that with a little looking you can find, that fill all your desired options and requirements.  But that said, Good Hunting, and keep those suggestions coming in folks! wink

Well, being partial to Ovation guitars and trying to stay under that price threshold (the Composite Acoustics is a GREAT suggestion TF!).
I would be looking at something like Ovation in a full depth "Balladeer" body (standard "round hole).  I travel with my Ovation 15 hole all the time and over  almost 9 years of wandering have not had to adjust the action once.  The Applause is lower cost, still has the fiber composite body, laminated top, channel reinforced neck, grover style 18:1 tuners, string through bridge, and radius fretboard (which makes it easier to transition from "most" electrics).
This thing has been impervious to the heat of the Arizona desert, frost of the Pacific Cascade mountains (in the dead of winter), humidity of the beach on a misty/foggy day,  passed around it's share of campfires without suffering, and flown in the overhead and once in the cargo hold of several airlines.   http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/CS244

The Applause branded version is a little less expensive but still a highly playable model with good tone and projection.... and BTW the price has really come down over the last 9 years!!!

I assume that they sent you an e-mail via the "chordie mailer" in which case you might not have had the "real" return address attached.
So, find a post by the person (member) and if you click on their name (left side of the post window) it should take you to their profile, and there you should be able to find their contact e-mail address.

let me know if that works for you.

Howdy Kevin,  Back when Russell Harding was putting this section on the "Chordie Map", and before it appeared officially in this Forum. He wanted something that was easy to use, supported multi-track mixing, and would allow importing of popular sound files for backing etc..... the "Free" price was a really a bonus.  Russ & I discussed this a lot in those early days and after trying other similar programs, kind of decided that Audacity was the one we would recommend.  Cross platform compatible, not too much of a resource hog, and, did I mention FREE !!

There are others... and over the years Audacity has become more robust, but there are tutorials here on Chordie, and the learning curve is not too steep. So to get your feet wet it is still my "go-to" program.  As you get into it more you might want to move up into something like Reaper which has loads of effects you can play around with (Audacity also uses VST plug-ins you can add).  Plus did I mention the FREE part? !! ?  wink  wink

Well Kim, your post reminded me of a few from around these parts, that although we have had a long association (going back 20+ years) might not be as recognizable in other sections of the world.

Curtis was a regular at my "local".... and really packed the place on Friday & Saturday evenings. Still at it after all these years!!

AND  Terry Robb!  Another "regular" and a regular guy who still answers correspondence personally from his many fans (including me).

There is a way to request a tune be indexed.  Go to Resources and FAQs..... you will find instructions on adding a song to the index, but it doesn't happen overnight.  Also be advised that the chances are better of being included if the artist or tune has a following and there is sufficient popularity to warrant.

Sorry Bill, but as you said, the file is RTF which is a text document not a sound file.  Your windows word application should be able to open it although some formatting will likely be changed (perhaps the chords won't align exactly to the words) but then you can save it as a .doc file.  Then all you have to do is have someone perform it and record it in .wav or MP3..... Then you can upload it.

Not what you wanted to hear, I'm sure!

We're just coming off almost 2 weeks of unseasonably good..... shoot, it was 83 on my back porch in the shade on Thursday!  Folks are still driving around with snowboards on the roof rack though.

This keeps up, we'll be having to plow the fire-breaks real early!
