A-ha! I note with interest that Priddy has a folk festival - can you recommend it? I'm thinking of a possible Chordian gathering?!

KajiMa - interesting thread, you seem to have struck a Chord(ie)! Certainly wish I could sing better, am always up for helpful advice (and have had some previously on Chordie). Agreed, the Chordians are a great bunch of people.
Just by the way, is that Priddy, Somerset, or Texas?

Will have a look at that, kind Sir. On a visit to Kansas a few years ago, I was very kindly given a book called "Sex, Death and Fly-fishing" by John Gierach - very good stuff, too. I think he's probably well known in the USA, but I hadn't heard of him before.

Re: I played last night! What is your worst guitar expeirience? (27 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Like 4gits I try to warm up before I go out to play, but however well I sing & play at home I always make mistakes in front of an audience! Of course, they usually don't notice.
My worst experience was when I invited family & friends to come & see me play at a pub. They were all very quiet afterwards! I had got my wife to video me & when I watched it back I realised that my singing was almost inaudible. I wiped the tape & almost gave up completely. I had been playing at that pub for about 6 months, so why had nobody told me to just sing louder?! Even on the night my family & friends could have done that after my first song!
Anyway, rather than give up, I resolved to try & improve, which I think I have. I'm better with a mic, though!

Re: THE MOST IMPORTANT SPORT IN THE USA (36 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
It's true, cricket is a weird sport, but I love it. I'm not knocking baseball at all, I think I would enjoy seeing it live, or a highlights package, if such a thing were available in the UK.
Southpaw, that is certainly a cautionary tale. I just have British teeth, naturally screwed up for nothing!

Tried to watch baseball once, but couldn't stand all the close-ups of players spitting. What's all that about? It's just not cricket, old boy!

Have just found this thread, very interesting too...
Maybe it's just my warped sense of humour, but can't help smiling at the thought of Detman "surprising his wife with a clarinet"! Would like to see that on Youtube!
No offence!!

Re: New Elvis Costello Show (5 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Have been watching Spectacle for a couple of months now & I agree, it's an excellent show. I'd watch anything with Elvis C in it, though! Only problem is that for some reason it's hidden away late at night & quite easy to miss as a result. An intelligent show about music should be more primetime IMHO.
Have not heard of Austin City Limits at all. Anyone heard of Later with Jools Holland (BBC2)? Usually pretty good, but totally live, so performances do vary a bit! I can also very much recommend Radcliffe & Maconie on BBC Radio 2 - great range of music/very knowledgeable/very funny! Should be available worldwide, thanks to the old interweb. It helps if you get the British sense of humour!
Anyhoo, just love Elvis & his songs - I have a stab at playing a few of them (Red Shoes, Candy, Alison, God's Comic, Working Week, Everyday I Write The Book).
Love the little guitarist RavenLady, is that you? Used to have friends in Calgary, but seem to have lost touch - would be there like a shot, otherwise!
Cheers again,
Paul.

Cheers, Paul (48 yrs young).

Thanks for all the great replies, guys (and doll!) - am seriously envious of all of you! But especially Zurf!! My dream locations would be New Zealand, Canada or Cuba (for bonefish on the fly).
As Old Doll will no doubt confirm, fly fishing is a great sport for the fairer sex as well. As I said before, I am happy to give some tuition or help to anyone in the local area or passing through.
Tight lines & strings!

Topic: any fisherfolk out there? (29 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Hi all - have noticed from reading other posts that there are more than a few references to fish and fishing, so how about a new thread on your favourite fishing spots/types of fishing/tall tales?
I live in East Sussex between Hastings and Rye & have a beautiful reservoir not far away called Powdermill - have had some great days there, fly fishing for trout. If any fisherfolk are in the area, or passing through I would be happy to show them around, learners most welcome. Warning, though, fly fishing can be very addictive!
Cheers,
Paul.

Or possibly "remembrance" - saw him sing this on recent BBC2 prog about his life. I was suprised that I couldn't find any of his songs on Chordie!

Re: What line of work are you in? (66 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Hi all - I'm a camera repairer & yes, it is a dying trade, so am more of a househusband these days. So, main work really is cooking, cleaning, ironing, diy, gardening, school run etc - feels a bit pointless & depressing sometimes, but am luckier than so many other people. Plus, get to play guitar everyday! Just by the by, the UK is soooooooo crowded! Really fancy moving to Canada or NZ if anyone can offer me a job - I hear the fishing is really good too!!

Thanks for the info, everybody. Have had a brief look at Youtube & it all still seems as clear as mud! Needs some serious study time, I suppose. Also, I tend to get kicked off the computer after 30 mins or so...

Topic: Scales! (4 replies, posted in Acoustic)
While I'm in the posting mood... Most of the songs I play tend to use simple chords, not straying too far from 1st position & am always quite envious of players who use the full range of the fingerboard. Have read a little bit about learning scales being a good way to improve, but can't make much sense of it all. Any suggestions/websites/links would be gratefully received!
Cheers!

Hi all - need a bit of guidance from you good people out there! I am a regular player at local acoustic nights - my voice is reasonably in tune (I think), but needs to be louder, or at least to project more. I seem to have a natural max volume that I can't go beyond, as much as I try! Are there any tips you can give me, or websites I can look at, or do I need a good vocal coach?
Cheers!

Topic: Acoustic nights, Hastings/Rye E.Sussex (0 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Hi all - posted this in another section last time without much response, or maybe there aren't that many musicians in the area who want to come out & play! Anyhoo, just to give a mention to the next acoustic night at The Smuggler pub, Pett Level, which is on Wednesday 4th June from 8.30pm. Just turn up & play, all standards/styles welcome, guitars available to borrow. Just ask for Ian, or Paul(2). For any more info, just reply to this post.
Cheers!

Hi all - just a quick reminder about the acoustic night at The Smuggler, Pett Level (nr Rye E.sussex). The next one is this Wednesday 23rd April, then every two weeks. It's a fun evening - just bring an instrument (acoustic) & play, or guitars are available to borrow. Nice atmosphere - ideal if you have never played in public before. From 8.30 till late. Ask for Ian if you want to play, or just come & watch if you prefer.
Hope to see you there!
