Re: facebook (18 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
I cringe when someone speaks of another "app" that'll do something for me, so I don't have to think. Our simple spell-check or grammar-check programs are a good early examples. If my computer is going to take care of these things, then I'll quickly lose the ability to express myself in writing, or spell my words correctly.
My phone is nearly 10 years old and has no idea what an app is. I'm OK with that. I can wait till I get home and use the laptop if I need to find something. But I disagree about the spell check. I feel that function has actually made me a better speller. After a couple misspellings I learned the correct one. I rarely get that squiggly red line under words when I'm typing now and it's usually because I'm trying to type too fast and miss a letter.
In regards to the OP; I abhor facebook. Oh look, there's that squiggly red line. I guess I spelled facebook wrong. ![]()

OMG! We were cut from the same mold.

Well I set up an account and tested my connection tonight. It passed so I'm in. I made a 2 minute test recording and that came back OK as well. I don't have an interface at the moment so I can only plug one instrument at a time into my computer; meaning no vocals. I just used a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter and plugged my sound hole pick-up right into the external mic jack. I didn't think about it at the time but the pick-up may pick up my voice as well. I'll try that tomorrow night. This will be fun. ![]()
Here's the test recording.

We have warned you so many times and you have decided to ignore our e-mails or because you believe we have not been instructed to get you arrested, and today if you

fbi director. We have investigated and found out that you didn't have any idea when the fraudulent deal was committed with your information's/identity and right now if
you id is placed on our website as a wanted person, i believe you know that it will be a shame to you and your entire family because after then it will be announce in
all the local channels that you are wanted by the fbi. As a good Christian and a honest man, I decided to see how i could be of help to you because i would not be
happy to see you end up in jail and all your properties confiscated all because your information's was used to carry out a fraudulent transactions, i called the efcc
and they directed me to a private attorney who could help you get the process done and he stated that he will endorse, sign and stamp the document at the sum of $98.00

You need to do everything possible within today and tomorrow to get this process done because our director has called to inform me that the warrant of arrest has been
signed against you and once it has been approved, then the arrest will be carried out, and from our investigations we learnt that you were the person that forwarded
your identity to one impostor/fraudsters in Nigeria when he had a deal with you about the transfer of some illegal funds into your bank account which is valued at the
sum of $10.500,000.00 usd.

usd which was suppose to have been transferred to you all this while.
Note/ all the crimes agencies have been contacted on this regards and we shall trace and arrest you if you disregard this instructions. You are given a grace today to

And my response:
OH NO. The fbi. Please no! *=)) rolling on the floor *=)) rolling on the floor *=)) rolling on the floor
Let me educate you, you stupid fool. Your understanding of the English language is pathetic and your understanding of the criminal justice system is just as bad.
First; fbi is always written as FBI. See how I wrote that? It's all capital letters. Also, The FBI does NOT send an email to a suspected criminal. They do a very quiet investigation and if there is criminal activities discovered, they obtain a warrant and go right to the house of the person. No warning is given via email. If you took the time to look, you would see that the FBI states this fact on their website. A person under investigation will NEVER receive an email from the FBI.
Second; the mayor of a town or city has no authority to close a bank account or to have someone jailed. A warrant needs to be draw up and signed by a judge. After that has been done, a sheriff/constable will execute that warrant. A warrant does not need to be "approved". After a person has been found guilty of a crime, personal property can be confiscated but it depends on the nature of the crime.
Third; I do not work for a company or agency so good luck getting me fired. (I'm self employed) You should also know that a suspect of a crime CAN work for a company until proven guilty in a court of law.
And finally, thank you for informing me of the existence of the EFCC (Economic and Financial Crimes Commission). I did not know this agency existed. I can now forward this email to them so that they may begin their own investigation into your activities.
Have a very nice day. ![]()
I'm think I'm enjoying this.

Re: display / demos (8 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Have your mind ready to make the purchase, have a price in mind that you are willing to pay, be polite and respectful but be ready to walk away if your offer is not accepted.
That's what I did for my first mandolin. It was a Kay beginners model. The strings were shot, intonation was way off and the machine heads were a bit sloppy. Asking price was $175. I offered $100 and he said no. I politely said thank you and walked away. He changed his mind and stopped me after about 3 steps.
BUT - never offer a "low ball" price that could be considered a insult. Do a little homework and find out what other places are selling the same item for, that way you will know the value of that item.
Sound advise there. Most people know what they need to get for an item and they know the value of it before they offer it for sale.

Re: display / demos (8 replies, posted in Acoustic)
I'm the complete opposite.
I own a small tree care business and folks will try to work me down as well. It doesn't bother me because I'm the same way. Nobody wants to pay more for something than they have to. Back in '98 I bought a wood chipper that was used for demo purposes. It listed for $30,000. I offered the dealer $25,000 because it had 4 hours of demo time and quite a few scratches on it. He came back with $26,000 and we were both happy.
I wheeled for the mandolin I bought this past summer as well. Being a small mom and pop store, it was easier than dealing with a large chain. It listed for $600 but had a severe cosmetic blemish that was repaired quickly and wasn't meant to hide the fact. He had it marked down to $475. Here's the thread. http://www.chordie.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=24092 I don't know what a large note is in the UK but here, $100 bills get the attention of retailers. I offered him 4 and he took it.
Personally, I don't feel it would be out of line to ask for a discount on a demo model. Also keep in mind that credit cards have fees paid by the shopkeeper. Cash goes a long way to getting a better deal.

OK. I just bounced the idea off AuntJoe. She has to think about it. Weather is going to play a big factor so I couldn't commit until about a week before the event. If it decides to snow here at that time, (which does happen) I would have to back out. I have several commercial snow plowing contracts that I would lose if I didn't show up.

Topic: Time For Lessons (2 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
I'm basically self taught as some of you may recall from other posts. Mostly from books and other musicians. There was no such thing as the internet when I started playing. Scales are something I never took the time to learn. A few months ago I decided it was time to fill this gap. Even with You-Tube and all the other internet resources out there, I have been rather frustrated with my lack of progress. I can play a few but don't seem to be able to grasp putting the scales together with a chord progression. A couple weeks ago I stopped in to a small music store, just to pick up a set of strings for my 12 string. While there, I was talking to one of the owners and the conversation came around to my frustration. He said he could help me with that. After only 2 lessons I think I'm beginning to see a flicker of light at the end of the tunnel. With a lot of practice I believe I will have a grasp of this thing by next summer. Certainly not a master but at least understand what to do and more importantly, why. Sitting down one on one with someone that knows what they're doing really makes a difference! I'm actually excited about learning again.
Just wanted to share. ![]()
