If you contact them and they say it's ok for you to do it yourself... Here's some quick tips that I use.. I aways get slightly shorter screw from the hardware store, as the ones they often send with the strap button are too long. Measure the depth of the screw against a drill bit that is one size smaller in diameter than the screw to be installed and mark it with a piece of tape so you don't pre-drill too deep. When inserting the screw be sure to lubricate it with a drop of candlewax to avoid any splitting.-Pix

If it's done by a tech and you keep the receipt it should be fine but I would contact the company to be sure! Policies vary company to company so there's no way to say for sure without going to them. -Pix

Tops, I've got the majority of the listed songs in a book and it's around 50 of them. I've also got a list that I made (Somewhere) with other songs that I found and a bunch of the strumming patterns that I worked out for some of the songs.
Honestly, I had all but forgotten' about it, Since that point. I'll look around for my papers and see if I can't wrap it up this weekend! May not have the patterns posted with all the songs but I (or others
) can add them after it's public. They're just a general guide but I've got around 30 of the songs figured out. It's really amazing how many use the same patterns when you sit and work them out. It's really all in the feel.
Man...Now I feel bad for forgetting about it...
Thanks for the friendly reminder

Re: Guitar set up (18 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Pretty guitar!! Love the Rosewood and flamed maple back!
Most necks are pieced at that location and I'd guess the glue joint just popped and someone screwed it. Should hold fine...Though it's not the recommended way to fix it. If by chance it ever gives you any trouble you should be able to get it fixed easily by a good repair tech. They can clean, reglue and clamp the joint..replace the screw with a hardwood dowel and a little tinted filler and you'd never know it was ever there. Just my .02! -Pix

Re: Guitar set up (18 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Seems like some very helpful info posted here.
Guitarpix mentioned it being necessary to take your time when adjusting the truss rod.
Yesterday I bought an Epiphone FT 550 Exellente at a pawn shop. So beautiful (to me) and I got a case of the Love is blind I guess. I went completely through the purchasing process and got it home only to realize there was an extra screw in it! In the neck just where the neck starts to thicken was a hairline crack. The screw was countersunk and very well placed. There is no give to the effected area and it plays fine. It has a beautiful sound that jumps out at you. After reading Guitarpix post I suspect someone got in too big a hurry adjusting. Should I be really concerned about this? It plays very well, a non player would never know the screw didn't belong and I don't have that much invested. ($179) Which may or may not be too much. (Don't tell my wife if it is).
Sounds more like it wasn't tightened enough (IMO). This would allow the neck to pull forward more than desired and cause seperation at the rear of the heel. If so there is most likely some dipping/cupping in the top toward the soundhole... Most often over tightening will cause either a hump in the fretboard where it overlaps the body or the cracks you sometimes see in that area of the top. Holding the guitar in playing position, if the truss rod is tightened it pulls the headstock back towards you...If it reaches the point where it won't go any further then something has to give, so the front secton (toward the soundhole) can tend to rise.
What you describe could be that or just that it simply had a weak neck joint and someone reinforced it with a screw... If it was done well it will probably be stable for quite some time and isn't too much to worry about... I would be carefull with the string tension I put on it though. I'd probably keep 12's or lighter on it just to be safe.
The crack could be a potential problem though... Do you have pics?? It's hard to say without seeing it...
These are just my opinions.. I'm not a luthier!! I just dable and read allot

I agree 100%
I always get in trouble on Yahoo Answers in the music section because of this. People are always asking where to download music for free! I always respond and tell them to stop stealing and support the artist! Buy The CD!! They don't like it and usually report my post as spam, as well as offer up some very choice words. That's okay though cause I just contact yahoo and have the topic deleted

Posting pics is actually quite simple..Go to the pic you want to post and right click on it. Select properties and copy the http code for it. Then when you are posting add this and waa la!
If it's a personal pic that you took, it has to be hosted by a photo site like flickr or photobucket to obtain an http address. So you'll need to upload it first. -Pix
*Posting pics is a very valuable tool!! Unfortunately, it can be easily exploited.. Let's make sure we keep them all clean and topic related.*

Micky, Yea it was a steal (IMO) Picked it up for $511.00 Not bad considering they go for around $1300 new. So it wasn't quite 1/3 but close.. I'm confident it will be a good one but if not I can always resale...

Just pulled the trigger on a new acoustic/electric! She's a S&P Showcase Rosewood AER model. Canadian Spruce top, Solid EIR back and sides, Maple bindings with AER dual source concealed electronics... I've got a '95 S&P Pro Rosewood & a '95 Pro Curly Maple and love them. I had a Seagull Artist Rosewood last year but traded it for a Taylor 314e after about 6 months because the string spacing at the bridge was too wide for my taste. I loved the guitar tonally though, so I had been searching for a new S&P Showcase, since it's essentially the same guitar with a slightly narrower neck & spacing. Found it almost mint (1 small scratch on the side, hardly noticeable) for 1/3 the price of a new one! Gotta love ebay sometimes
A few pics from the dealer for now and I'll post a full review after she arrives.

Re: Which Elecro Acoustic? (17 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Mickey as far a the top wood...I'd try to stay in the spruce family, Sitka preferably if your heavy handed but if you think you might eventually use it for some picking work also you may want to consider Engelmann. Engelmann or adirondack spruce still handles strumming very well but it can be overdrivin and become muddy if it's strummed too heavily. It's more responsive though and will pick better than most sitka tops... I'd stay away from most ceder tops for strumming. Not only is it a much softer wood and more susceptible to pick marks and such but it "usually" doesn't work very well with a heavier hand. For a stronger bass, I'd consider rosewood as back and sides if it's available in the model you choose... Here you go http://www.cbguitars.com/woods.htm Give this a good read over! This info is particular helpful when ordering and you're having to guess at the tone of the guitar... Some good advice that guitardocphil often recommends is to check youtube out. Punch in the guitar you're considering and usually you'll get a few vids with reviews and sound samples. That is, If you can't find it locally to try.

Re: Backing tracks (16 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
You can order cd's of them off of ebay by band. I bought backing tracks to all of Oasis's songs from ebay when I was learning. It was around $10 for about 50 songs. Somewhere in my bookmarks I have a site saved with free registration and free backing track downloads by the thousands! I'll search around for it.. I can't remember which pc or account I was using at the time though, so it may take me a day or 2 to unearth it. -Pix

Re: Which Elecro Acoustic? (17 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Hey Micky,
You've already got some good suggestions... I checked out the Ibanez and it looks good. Ibanez uses a 1 11/16 neck which is fairly narrow but the ones I've owned had a slightly chunkier neck profile that made the fret board seem wider and easier to fret than most 1 11/16. They play more like a 1 3/4 neck... The Fishman electronics on them have always sounded good to me plugged in as well. It is an all laminate guitar, or I assume it is because they don't use the word solid anywhere in the description, So it won't really age and improve with time and the tone may be a little thin unplugged but most thinner profile guitars are going to have that problem anyway. A plus side to the laminate is that it won't really affect how it sounds plugged in and a full laminate guitar is much stronger and more stable, making it better suited for traveling or playing outdoors.
The yamaha apx line looks real good as well. I've never played one so I can't offer many details but I have heard lots of people brag on them. Ovation is also a good choice. They have a thinner neck profile so you may want to try one first but they are great guitars. Excellent plugged in and will probably have a better acoustic tone than most thinner profile guitars, especially in the bass range. They're built tough and handle heavy strumming well. Some people find the bowl back uncomfortable to play, especially while sitting, so ,again, be sure to try one first.
The Taylors are also great! The models raven suggested would work well for you! Also the Big Baby! They sound remarkably good for a smaller bodied guitar and is a very popular choice for many. I'd also keep my eye out for anything in the Godin line (Seagull, Art & Lutherie, Simon & Patrick, Norman). The folk models with spruce top would be next to the top of my list of recommendations.. Great bang for the buck! A great tone plugged in and they are exceptional acoustically, for this price range. Okay, I've rambled on enough...:)
These are only MY opinions and everyone has different preferences, So It's always best to try before you buy! That said, a lot of us just don't have that option without several hours drive time. If you're not sure, and are going to order one, I'd suggest considering used! Buying used (online or locally) can save you you a lot of money! This allows you to get more for your money or just get a good deal on the same model and if it doesn't suit you, you can sell it without that initial loss from a new guitar. Maybe even turn a profit... -Pix

Cool Russ, So do you play it? Any good fairly simple tunes you'd recommend if you do? Me and the wife have been planning on a trip to the islands but it'll probably be another year or 2.... Waiting on the kids to get a touch older. Maybe by then I'll know enough to play with some locals
From what I understand, Slack key is almost sacred in the islands and not many want to share their knowledge. -Pix

Re: Guitar set up (18 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Yea the shop should have offered to set it up properly for you! Just remember, when tightening/loosening the truss rod to only move in 1/8 turn increments every 5-6 hours to avoid any damage. Also be sure to check your intonation afterwards. A proper set up is more than just lower action via truss rod. Straightening the neck too much in order to lower the action can cause your intonation to go off, as well as other problems. To set it up properly you need to adjust the nut slots and bridge in conjunction with the truss rod to keep everything correct! It would probably still be a good idea to get a full set up from a professional or carry it back to them and they may do it for you for free since you bought it from them and it should have allready been done... -Pix
